Obama Media

While it comes at no real surprise given how they behaved during the presidential campaign, the MSM has finally decided to go all in with its support for the President. Next Wednesday night, June 24, ABC News will host a program about health care reform from inside the White House, but only one side will be presented — i.e. Obama’s. The Chief of Staff for the RNC is not happy about this decision and sent the following letter to David Westin, the President of ABC News:

Dear Mr. Westin:

As the national debate on health care reform intensifies, I am deeply concerned and disappointed with ABC’s astonishing decision to exclude opposing voices on this critical issue on June 24, 2009. Next Wednesday, ABC News will air a primetime health care reform “town hall” at the White House with President Barack Obama. In addition, according to an ABC News report, GOOD MORNING AMERICA, WORLD NEWS, NIGHTLINE and ABC’s web news “will all feature special programming on the president’s health care agenda.” This does not include the promotion, over the next 9 days, the president’s health care agenda will receive on ABC News programming.

Today, the Republican National Committee requested an opportunity to add our Party’s views to those of the President’s to ensure that all sides of the health care reform debate are presented. Our request was rejected. I believe that the President should have the ability to speak directly to the America people. However, I find it outrageous that ABC would prohibit our Party’s opposing thoughts and ideas from this national debate, which affects millions of ABC viewers.

In the absence of opposition, I am concerned this event will become a glorified infomercial to promote the Democrat agenda. If that is the case, this primetime infomercial should be paid for out of the DNC coffers. President Obama does not hold a monopoly on health care reform ideas or on free airtime. The President has stated time and time again that he wants a bipartisan debate. Therefore, the Republican Party should be included in this primetime event, or the DNC should pay for your airtime.

Respectfully,
Ken McKay
Republican National Committee
Chief of Staff

This comes on the heels of a Politico report about how Obama has been “wooing” the New York Times (as if it needed wooing), and further evidences a disturbing level of acquiescence to the White House. It’s one thing to have a broadcast from inside the White House, although it does strike an appearance of impropriety, but its another thing altogether to so blatantly snub an opposing views when the production is supposed to be one of news reporting. Presenting the view of those in power without question or examination, and refusing to allow any other voice, is pretty much the textbook definition of propaganda.

Since there is sure to be an uproar over this in the blogosphere, however, I’m wondering whether ABC News will back down and either allow some token opposition voice, bring on a known opponent of the President’s plan to raise some issues, or allow some questions of the President from actual reporters (Jake Tapper does still work for ABC News, doesn’t he?). Either way, its awfully pathetic that the MSM can’t seem to figure out how to get it right the first place. They are so blinded by their fascination with all things Obama, apparently, that any semblance of actual news reporting has gone out the window, and is being replaced with unabashed cheerleading for The One.

UPDATE: Oops! I didn’t realize that Bruce was writing on the same topic until after I posted. See his take below as well.

  • So – unlike the days when evil BUSH ran the country like a dictator, and after every speech he made the Dem spokesman would be allowed to have his rebuttal time…we’re getting ‘paid programming’ from the White House.
“Special offer health care for you and your entire family fand since it’s being paid for by the (evil) RICH, you can’t be turned down!  People normally expect to pay thousands of dollars for such policies!, but today, The United States of Obama is offering it for only $19.99 (a day, some restrictions may aply, offer expires on June 1st, 2009).
But WAIT!  There’s MORE!  Be one of the 1st 10,000 to enroll now and you’ll be exempted from income taxes for the remainder of the year (restricted to Union members, contributors to the DNC and friends of Obama, Registered Republicans and conservative voters need not apply)!”
Do you think the ShamWow guy will be there too?

  • “Do you think the ShamWow guy will be there too?”
Who, George Stephanopoulos?  I expect him to be there, offering his usual blistering critique of Obama’s plan and presentation.

  • My guess of how ABC will do it (or how it always appears to me when I watch the MSM) is that they will find an “opposing” view to air with the program.  Of course, the person they find will be the most flambuoyant, out-there wacko, who can’t focus on the topic, who damns every person and everything, and generally turns everyone off just by his presentation.  If you have to present both sides, at least choose the worst possible spokesman for the other side that you can!

  • Are you suggesting they’re going to get Reverend Wright to speak on behalf of the Republicans?
And is it just me, isn’t there anybody who speaks on behalf of Americans without slamming a (D) or (R) in front or behind their name?
Oh, right, that’s supposedly what the unbiased media did!  Right, sorry for the interruption we can continue with our now regularly scheduled worship of Barack Obama.
And they thought Bush was bad.  Doesn’t hold a candle to this clown.

  • “This comes on the heels of a Politico report about how Obama has been “wooing” the New York Times ”

That is like saying he offered a handful of $100 bills to some $2 hookers.

  • I can’t wait for them to bring back Fairness Doctrine so we can kneecap these networks…

  • ABC- All Barrack channel.

  • Is the entire ABC “news” crew going to fellate him on camera as pre-game entertainment as well? They may as well – they swallow everything else of his uncritically, and they’re certainly shameless (or maybe just brainless) enough.

    Watchdogs? Yeah, right.

Clark Taylor above has it right: if they should somehow permit an opposing view, it’ll be some complete wacko.

  • No wonder Obama has been so silent on the Iranian elections.  It would seem that the Mullah’s adopted a page from Obama’s south Chicago electioneering manual.  Obama has adopted the Iranian propaganda methodology – control the media and control the people.  It is none the less surprising how willing the traditional networks are to give up their own credibility to help Team Obama ruin American journalism (and health care, and automotove manufacturing, and, and, and….)

  • Credibility schmedibility – what matters is continued employment, and the Dems will never let their propaganda organs go under.

  • Back when I worked for 20/20, I met often with Av Westin, the father of the current nepotistic nerd-in-charge. Like all nerds, the Westins are Statist socialists who hate individual excellence since the family possesses none of it themselves. Ditto for the other networks, all holding tanks for third-rate “journalists” with little or no clue as to how a business works. The political elites employ them as houseboys & go-fers in advancing socialism so that the US economy can have the same shitty healthcare that the UK, Canada, and continental Europe suffer from. Sadly, I doubt John Stoessel will be in the Blue Room. Probably Diane Sawyer, who worked in the Nixon WH before she defected and other refugees from excellence who infest the ABC newsroom. Just watch for a “drop-by” from the Socialist-In-Charge who will guarantee that ABC will now have the same access as Bowin’ Brian Williams, the NBC suck-up anchorboy. Gibson will interview Obama & Michelle & the dog will saunter by just “by chance.”
Yes, Obama is taking notes from Ahmadinejad to add to his Chicagoland dossier on how to steal elections.

  • This really is shameful.  Our press never ceases to reach lower and further disgust me.

  • daveinboca

Dont forget that we will get a quick shot of Obama popping M&Ms into his mouth as well.

  • Boycott ABC

  • “Wooing?”  Is that some shorthand for offering taxpayer monies to keep their fishwrapper factory running?

  • It really doesn’t matter if they do present the other side of the argument, they would do it in such a way as to discredit it.
“But here to give an opposing view is Doctor Rajeev Pudrah, a foriegn quack and a paid shill for big insurance and Faux news”

  • I’ve come to believe that the media have squarely taken on the role of Blanche Maxwell
