Why did Rep. Joe Wilson Yell “You Lie!” At Obama?

He was a bit exercised about a certain line in the Obama speech.  He’s since apologized for inappropriate behavior and, frankly I agree. It was inappropriate. Just like Obama calling Sarah Palin and other liars was equally inappropriate, especially when later hypocritically calling for “civility”.

But back to Wilson. He was apparently reacting to this line in Obama’s speech:

There are also those who claim that our reform effort will insure illegal immigrants. This, too, is false – the reforms I’m proposing would not apply to those who are here illegally.

So why was Wilson outraged. Most likely because he has actually read the bill in the House and what he has read doesn’t synch with what the president said. Here’s why:

The America’s Affordable Health Choices Act of 2009 (HR 3200) is extremely complex and there’s no way to know how the bill ultimately will be implemented. First, it is unclear if illegal immigrants will be required to have health insurance, as would citizens and legal immigrants (green card holders). In its summary of the bill, the Congressional Research Service (CRS) states, “Under HR 3200, all legal permanent residents (LPRs), non-immigrants, and unauthorized aliens who meet the substantial presence test … would be required to obtain health insurance.”1 Substantial presence is defined as having been in the United States for at least 31 days during the current year and at least 183 days during the current year and previous two years. No mention is made of legal status in the legislation for determining substantial presence.

So under HR 3200, as long as anyone meets the “substantial presence” definition, regardless of “legal status”, they’re required to get health insurance. That would include illegal immigrants.

That’s why Joe Wilson yelled.

  • Normally, I would agree that someone would be out of line doing something like this. But I for one am tired – no, I am fed up – with this jerkoff who runs around masquerading as the President making crap up despite the facts that show him to be a grade-A liar.

Wilson should be applauded for doing what has needed to be done for a long time. Everyone should attack The Clown™ for being a desperate thief and liar.

  • No clue what “Congressional Research Service” is but if you look at the bill:

    Page 170:

    1 ‘(2) NONRESIDENT ALIENS.—Subsection (a)
2 shall not apply to any individual who is a non-
    3 resident alien.

“Sec 246: No Federal payment for undocumented aliens.”

5 Nothing in this subtitle shall allow Federal payments
6 for affordability credits on behalf of individuals who are
7 not lawfully present in the United States.

It looks pretty clear to me. Obviously the “Congressional Research Service” needs to hire more people.

    • The Congessional Research Service: The Congressional Research Service (CRS) serves shared staff to congressional committees and Members of Congress. CRS experts assist at every stage of the legislative process — from the early considerations that precede bill drafting, through committee hearings and floor debate, to the oversight of enacted laws and various agency activities.

The CRS report from which the summary is taken (see page 4). The fact that a bill has contradictory portions isn’t unusual, especially in one that size and written that quickly by various different staffs and committees. What you seem to have references are subtitles. Those prohibitions would most likely only apply to the subtitle cited.

The fact remains, as stated, that the CRS finds nothing which would substantially prevent illegal aliens from being insured under the bill.

      • And the bureaucracy in charge will make the determination as to what the legislation authorizes, doesn’t authorize, what it “mandates” and what it restricts.

You don’t need any explanation of how THAT will turn out.

        • One more thing by way of example:

It took Congress 17 years to clarify what it meant in the ADA (Americans Disability Act) as to physical disability. Someone of 400 lbs was considered disabled, but someone with severe osteoarthritis was not.

Under HR3200, we’ll be long since bankrupted by the politically entitled looters.

    • Neither one of those sections (which are limited in scope) actually denies access to illegal immigrants. They both merely state that they do not specifically authorize application to illegals.

In addition, there are no enforcement mechanisms to prevent illegals from being covered, and there actually provisions which mandate that resident aliens (illegal or otherwise) sign up for a health insurance plan.

    • If you look at the bill, you’ll see that only applies to affordability credits. IOW, illegal aliens (in theory) shouldn’t be getting tax credits to offset the cost of premiums or co-pays for low-income individuals.

However, that’s not what Obama said. Under HR3200, illegals *will* be able to buy insurance under the exchange which is subsidized by new taxes contained therein — “his plan” will insure people who are here illegally. He misrepresented the plan and got called out.

  • I wrote the following note to Dem majority leader Steny Hoyer:

As a matter of fact Obama WAS lying when he said the health reform bill would not extend care to illegals. Else why did the Democrats kill an amendment to prevent it. Rep. Joe Wilson should be rewarded with a medal for speaking truth to power.

I have read the House bill, all 1018 pages, and heard comments on this topic over time from Obama and many others promoting this legislation, and it is my observation that Obama was lying through his teeth from beginning to end of his speech tonight.

Anyone who votes for anything close to what this bill and Obama are proposing is my personal enemy, and I will do everything in my power to see that all such supporters are defeated at the next election.

  • Why dont you just admit it? You would rather deprive 40 Million of your fellow, maybe hardworking, or sick, injured, financially strapped American neighbors from getting adequate healthcare than maybe, maybe allowing a few Mexicans who fall off the truck picking your apples get medical help.

Does the phrase, bite off your nose to spite your face, come to mind?

We know you hate and despise Obama and all the other dark elements of this administration, but do you want to make everyone suffer for your perverse fear of minorities everywhere? I thought Americans were supposed to be tough and handle adversity. You people are cowards.

    • A few illegals?

Wow. 10-20 million estimated which probably are part of that 40 million estimate.

We have effectively free healthcare for some illegals already but you have to abuse to the system. Creating an officially free system and watch those number just grow as anyone with an ailment from around the world plunks down to the US for an extended visit.

    • I hate this line of attack. The systems being proposed will do financial damage to the country on a much larger scale than your “40 million” (really closer to 14 million) who cannot get medical coverage. But since you won’t be able to point specifically to any one program when that happens, you can sleep better at night. Good intentions are meaningless when they’re paving the road to disaster. If you cared about anything besides useless platitudes, you might understand the danger that people like you represent.

  • I cant get on his site.I wanted to contribute to his pac.Not realy the place to say it I guess. But as I watched I kept saying to myself, thats a lie and thats a lie anouther lie……Does he realy think we are that stupid?

  • I was watching Cspan about a month ago and the Republicans where trying to get wording in the bill stating abortion would not be covered the Dems voted it down. They also tried to get wording in there about aliens not being covered the Dems voted that down too.If they are not going to be covered why where these admendments voted down?

  • When do we get the apology from Obama for calling millions of Americans, “liars”?

    Yeah, I know…….I don’t expect one either.

  • You know, forget all about this bureaucratic language, which is simply mumbo-jumbo that even the smartest people get fogged over trying to decipher.

It all boils down this: if this garbage plan were to pass, and some illegal came into a hospital asking for treatment, would they be turned away? Of course not. And knowing that, more will come here. Also, how long before the ACLU or some other do-gooder liberal group sues the United States (you can just imagine the case: “One Undocumented Worker v. Barack H. Obama, et al.”) and wins a ton of money because they have been selectively left out of this plan, if that was being done, which it isn’t? And the courts – especially if they are cherry-picked for California or anywhere in the Ninth Circuit – will always side with the illegals. And if the case got to the US Supreme Court, could you imagine a Justice Sonia Sotomayor holding against her own? I doubt it.

No, illegals would get medical care under ObamaCare℠, an we saps (also known as “taxpayers”) would be stuck with the bill…as usual.

  • Obama: ‘If you misrepresent what’s in the plan, we will call you out’

Joe Wilson (R-SC) returns the favor … calls out Obama
Democrats get their collective “tit in a ringer”

  • Joe Wilson yelled because he’s racist.

    And anti-immigrant.

At least that’s how it’s being spun.

Joe Wilson as the new face of GOP intolerance in America!

  • “That’s why Joe Wilson yelled.”

Too bad it wasn’t a chorus. Wilson shouldn’t have apologized; I wish Republicans would quit apologizing for standing on principal.

  • I would love to see Joe Wilson, run for president in 2012. He had the guts to stand up for the american people that are yelling we don’t want government ran health care. Shouldn’t this decision be up to the american people. I didn’t vote for Obama because I saw early on that he was a liar and a mouthpiece for the liberals, but now people are starting to wake up and realize they shouldn’t of voted for him either. I just wish it would of been sooner. Take a look at President Obama’s favor rating amongst the american people, he has been slowly going down. My feelings is wake up America and realize what is going to happen if we allow government run healthcare. Thank you Rep. Joe Wilson for standing up and letting the majority voices of the people be heard.

  • That’s nothing. You should watch the British MOPs rip into the PM from time to time.
