Defiant Iran Thumbs Its Nose At The Rest Of The World (update)

Well, so far this new policy of “engagement” is paying off handsomely with Iran. Here’s how they unclench their fist:

Iran’s government will build 10 new sites to enrich uranium, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said Sunday, a dramatic expansion of the country’s nuclear program and one that is bound to fuel fears that it is attempting to produce a nuclear weapon.

Ahmadinejad told state news agency IRNA that construction of at least five nuclear facilities was to begin within two months.

This in the wake of an IAEA censure last Friday which, obviously, intimidated the heck out of the Iranians. The censure called Iran’s activities a “breach of its obligations” under UN treaties. Today’s announcement tells everyone what they think of those obligations. And if that wasn’t clear, Iran’s leaders made it so:

“We are ready to be friendly and kind toward the whole world, but at the same time we won’t allow the smallest violation of the rights of the Iranian nation,” Ahmadinejad said.

The head of Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization, Ali Akbar Salehi, standing alongside the president, told reporters that the decisions of the cabinet on Sunday are a strong response to the “unacceptable actions of world powers.”

Or, “stuff your ‘engagement’ in your pocket, we’ve got a plan and we intend to complete it – and there’s nothing you can do to stop it.”

So – now what?

UPDATE: Ah.  The White House reacts:

But in Washington, White House spokesman Robert Gibbs called the announcement “another example of Iran choosing to isolate itself.”

“The international community has made clear that Iran has rights, but with those rights come responsibilities,” Gibbs said in a written statement. “As the overwhelming IAEA board of governors vote made clear, time is running out for Iran to address the international community’s growing concerns about its nuclear program.”

Maybe Gibbs missed it but it seems to me that Iran has just finished addressing the “international community’s growing concerns about its nuclear program”.

  • One wonders at politician-speak;  does “10 facilities” translate into one or two, rather like President Obama’s millions of jobs translating into whatever number it may be that certainly isn’t millions.

And why 10?  Surely economy of scale, with two or three at most for precaution against any one being destroyed by Israel/USA (as unlikely as the latter is), is enough without 10.

Most telling, I think, is that our TV news-broadcast response is that of near apathy.

  • SMART POWER!!
haha, the continuing clown show marches on.
Wow, last thing I imagined was that Obama would make George Bush look like a charter member of Mensa.

  • In another 3-4 years or so, Iran will be terrorizing Europe and they will still love Obama but curse the US for allowing it.

  • “Smart Power!”

  • These SmartDiplomacytm folks are making George W Bush look smarter and smarter by the day.

  • But in Washington, White House spokesman Robert Gibbs called the announcement “another example of Iran choosing to isolate itself.”

Yeah, DARN those Iranians for continuing to choose isolation instead of… um… peaceful nuclear power.  Or whatever they’re doing.  Which I’m sure is peaceful.  You know: NOT weapons or anything like that.  Because they promised us that they weren’t.  Sort of.  And, anyway, what does the possession of nuclear weapons AND long-range ballistic missiles get you in this world?  Wouldn’t they rather have the approval of the rest of the world?  Ask Imeme: having everybody in the world just LOOOOOVE you is absolutely kewl.

Why, why, oh WHY are democrats so flippin’ stupid???

    • Because they can leave the mess for someone else and then criticize them for how they handle the mess.  Win-win.

  • It’s remarkable how many lessons come off the elementary school playground. After all the boasting about this new kid being the coolest thing, allegedly thought of as the “most suave” at all the international schools his parents sent him to, we’ve learned he’s not only a fraud, but we’ve discovered he’s a pussy.
Barack’s the loser who tricked all the “believers” into thinking he was something special. We all know the type. They crumble and run away with soiled pants the very moment a real bully stands up to them and gives them their test.
Obama can’t hack basic economics. He can’t relate to normal people. He despises those who work hard and associates with the misfits, malcontents and deviants. He’s the King of the Weak. But its worse now, give that he’s been exposed as the narcissist coward he is. Expect higher frequencies of constructed “unprecedented events” to distract the nation from his abject failure. His surrogates will up the disorder frequency in a desperate attempt to keep the overwhelming majority from discovering their racket.

    • Dead on.  Even Politico is picking up on it.

      Flyover Fred – … we’ve learned he’s not only a fraud, but we’ve discovered he’s a pussy.

He is, to my mind, a classic bully: he runs roughshod over people who can’t really fight back and toadies up to those who can and will.

I would also add that Imeme, for all the hoopla about his mighty intellect (anybody seen his grades or anything he wrote in college or law school?  Anybody?  Bueller?  Bueller?), comes across as a smooth-talking doofus who either won’t or outright CAN’T understand the world as it is.  Is it arrogance?  Stupidity?  Inexperience?  Some or all of the above?  Who knows?  What I DO know is that it is B-A-D not only for the United States, but for the world.

  • Sure it’s 10 additional nuclear facilities, but how many have been proven to enrich uranium above 20%, let alone the 85+% necessary for weapons grade material?
None.  When that happens, let me know.

  • Gibbs
“time is running out for Iran to address the international community’s growing concerns about its nuclear program”

    Iran

“How many different ways can we tell you to go screw yourself”

    • I keep seeing these two guys at a table.  One of them gently shakes his head and tells the other “I’m afraid that you don’t understand.”  The other scoffs and replies “no, I don’t think that you understand.”  The first guy then drops all pretense and snarls “no, I don’t think you understand!”  The second guy becomes angry and snarls back “no, I don’t think you understand!”  The first guy slams a palm on the table and says “no, I don’t think YOU understand!!!”  The second guy slams a fist on the table and cries “no, I don’t think YOU understand!!!”

And so on, and so on.

  • You can see why the US just isn’t treated with respect anymore  …

‘He talks too much,” a Saudi academic in Jeddah, who had once been smitten with Barack Obama, recently observed to me of America’s 44th president. He has wearied of Mr. Obama and now does not bother with the Obama oratory.

  • “As the overwhelming IAEA board of governors vote made clear, time is running out for Iran to address the international community’s growing concerns about its nuclear program.”

Or what? You’ll taunt them a second time? WTF does Iran have to fear from you people?
