Stimulus Fraud? Where’s “Sheriff Joe”?

You remember the promise by the administration that “Sheriff Joe” Biden would be monitoring the stimulus fund use and calling out those who engage in waste, fraud and abuse?

If that were true, he should be almost living in New Mexico. However, my guess is New Mexico is just the visible tip of a fraud, waste and abuse iceberg associated with the 787 billion dollar “stimulus”. First we had money going to nonexistent congressional districts. And Joe was silent. Now we have money traced to nonexistent zip codes as well:

Closer examination of the latest recovery.gov report for New Mexico shows hundreds of thousands of dollars sent to and credited with creating jobs in zip codes that do not exist in New Mexico or anywhere else. Moreover, funds reported as being spent in New Mexico were given zip codes corresponding to areas in Washington and Oregon.

The recovery.gov site reports that $373,874 was spent in zip code 97052. Unfortunately, this expenditure created zip jobs. But $36,218 was credited with creating 5 jobs in zip code 87258. A cool hundred grand went into zip code 86705, but didn’t result in even one person finding work.

None of these zip codes exist in New Mexico, or anywhere else, for that matter.

Phantom jobs, phantom spending and nary a Sherriff in sight. Maybe he’s busy setting up the mechanism for corralling the 60 billion of waste, fraud and abuse in Medicare each year. You do recall that’s how they plan on “paying” for this new health care monstrosity, right? And they’re doing such a bang up job with the policing of the stimulus funds that we all ought to rest pretty easy, wouldn’t you say? I mean it’s obvious that Sherriff Joe has it all under control, isn’t it?

    • What the f***?  Teabag?  Jeez man, we even convinced Erb that was unacceptable…

    • Well, it IS on their opinion page.

Waiting for their cute animated op-ed cartoon about Gorebots and phony data, or democrats calling Bush “Hitler”.

      (crickets chirping)

  • It’s important that the democrats lose their majority in the House of Representatives in 2010.

As you probably already know, the US Constitution says Congress can only appropriate funds for two years.  The reason was to align funding with the term of House members who must originate all funding legislation.  As a result, any contract (or subcontract) the US Government awards contains a changes clause and a termination clause.

If Congress zeros out the funding, the government can terminate the contract for
“convenience.”  The contractor is first issued a “stop work order” which he flows down to his subs and suppliers.  The government then requests a termination proposal in which the contractor is entitled to actual cost and fee incurred plus shutdown costs such as collecting material he can’t stop and closing out work orders.

The bottom line is that if the democrats lose the House, all the unspent stimulus money can be recovered and used to pay down the debt.  Same for TARP funds, ObamaCare, GM bailouts, etc..  What the House giveth the House may taketh away.
    Vote in 2010!

  • Interesting….

So, the Treasury held actual money to be distributed for this stimulus boondoggle, the money was transferred to phantom entities in phantom zip codes, and the Treasury’s stimulus accounts have been deducted by the amount that was transferred to these phantom projects. I don’t hear anybody asking the real question: WHERE IS THE MONEY?

My guess is that it has been stolen. The same thing happened in Argentina prior to the 2001 collapse. The government, and government-supported companies and utilities, borrowed millions of dollars that “went in the front door and right out the back door” to foreign bank accounts. Corrupt politicians and politically-connected plutocrats plundered the country, while the Argentinean people were left “holding the bag” (i.e., the legally-binding, government-assumed national debt).

    Hmmm…

  • The stimulus was nothing more than the long awaited payoff for the totally corrupt democratic party and all their client groups.  It really was nothing but that.  The last big payday.

  • The only good news coming out of all of this waste and nonsense is that we are one day closer to being rid of this ignoramus in the White House. He has done so much wrong, he has become such a national joke, he is such a…well, a clown, that the votes he got in 2008 that won him the election have turned against him and his silly party. The economy will only improve partially, and growing numbers of people now see Obama as just a naive fool who is way, way over his head.

So, circle your calendars: November 2010, and November 2012. First we get rid of Nancy Pelosi as Speaker and Harry Reid altogether, and, second, we get rid of this criminal cabal in the White House, where they plainly do not belong. We will just have to suffer until then, but the outcomes will be sweet as we see these criminal thugs removed and banished from the halls of power.

  • Well, it’s true that “weather isn’t climate”.
But I’d take that more seriously if weather didn’t magically become climate every time it was hotter than last year, or there was a bad storm…
