AGW – The Phil Jones Interview: So Much For Settled Science

An amazing interview with Dr. Phil “hide the decline” Jones from the East Anglia University CRU. Jones granted an interview to the BBC. You can read the whole thing here.

A couple of excerpts.  On the question of “settled science” so beloved of those who like to use it like a club to stifle discussion:

Q: When scientists say “the debate on climate change is over”, what exactly do they mean – and what don’t they mean?

A: It would be supposition on my behalf to know whether all scientists who say the debate is over are saying that for the same reason. I don’t believe the vast majority of climate scientists think this. This is not my view. There is still much that needs to be undertaken to reduce uncertainties, not just for the future, but for the instrumental (and especially the palaeoclimatic) past as well.

Or, “no the science isn’t settled”.  In fact, it is far from settled.

And to the question of how unique this particular period is?

Q: Do you agree that according to the global temperature record used by the IPCC, the rates of global warming from 1860-1880, 1910-1940 and 1975-1998 were identical?

A: […] So, in answer to the question, the warming rates for all 4 periods are similar and not statistically significantly different from each other.

That should take care of the smug assurances of the AGW alarmists that there’s no need for further debate or science.  Jones doesn’t back off stating his belief that most of the recent climate change is a result of man, but it is clear his science isn’t as strong as it was once believed to be.

Newsbusters has some analysis covering some of the other questions in the interview, to include the Medieval Warm Period, “hide the decline” and temperature measurements.  Note that Jones cites his CRU’s temperature measurements, the Met’s temps and NASA/GISS.  All have been called into question by other scientists.

Then add in all the mistakes and unsourced, unpeer reviewed “facts” included in the IPCC report, it is apparent that the AGW claim to scientific relevance is at least on life-support.

  • {chuckle} You dense righties crack me up. It’s obvious that your interpretation of this man’s position is completely wrong, because leftist holy writ says that climage change is SETTLED SCIENCE. It just is. I decree it. So does Al Gore.

Of course I’ve stopped commenting on your climate change threads because you’re all delusional Nazi-like thugs, and your arguments are just like Goebbels. LOL! Just like them. You guys are inbred, too. And your arguments are sterile. So good news! I’m going to stop commenting here.

Hah! Not really! Just kidding! I can’t stay away for some strange reason, which has absolutely nothing to do with me needing some thick righties to lecture to and feel superior to. Nope, nothing to do with that at all. Because I’m smart and completely well adjusted, and the fact that I have isolated myself on a university campus where I never, ever have to face the real world has nothing to do with it. I only do it to help nurture the next generation in wise leftist thought. Really. Stop laughing!

I have posts about this over on my own blog, which I am definitely not pimping for, and you guys really ought to come over there and read them. You would be so much better informed if you did. Then you would not be taken in by posts from the ex-military basket cases that are front-page guys around here. They’re just too wigged out from the stress of being part of our imperialist armed forces, who should never have been committed to Iraq, which is definitely the biggest mistake in our history, but is suddenly a huge success now that Obama has taken charge.

Stop laughing! We might be able to get out without embarrassment because of Obama’s wisdom and courage, but those wogs will never be able to have a really stable government and they definitely don’t exert any influence on Iran next door, and in fact the whole thing really benefits Iran because the Arabs in Iraq are just drooling with anticipation to let their Persian masters run everything in the region. Stop laughing, I said! This is serious foreign policy analysis by someone who wrote a book on foreign policy! And my book is not either a pile of incoherent crap put out by a vanity press that specializes in suckering social science professors! It’s been read by dozens of people, and I got several favorable comments in the faculty lounge about it. Several! My wife was impressed with it too!

So I have to stop commenting on your ludicrous interpretation of this grilling of Phil Jones, who I’m sure will clarify all of this stuff in the next few days and reiterate the total validity of climate change and how we need to turn control over society over to wise leftists to avert total disaster. I have to get back to grading papers. I’m afraid I had to suspend grading the last assignment (Compare and contrast Obama’s Christlike visage with Sarah Palin’s vulgar full lips and ample bosom) because one student had the never to say he thought Palin was smart and in tune with the times. {eyes rolling} Poor delusional fellow. I feel bad that I have to fail him for such terrible analysis. LOL.

    • Let me just add that, as I was saying back on this other thread, I don’t care much about what the readers of this blog think — it’s a small politically partisan subset who responds with a fantasy of what I’m like based on an interpretation of what I write. I mean, really. You guys actually judge what a person is like by what they write? How ignorant. As the holy writ of post-modernism tells us, it’s all about how people FEEL, not how they THINK. Intentions, that’s the key. And my intentions are good, and you dense righties just don’t seem to understand that such an attitude trumps any “facts” or “evidence” that you think is so important.

What’s funny is that you get so mad that I’m “lecturing” and don’t seem to think anything’s wrong with the playground trash talk you throw around, impotently flinging out insults as if those matter on the internet. None of that matters to me. No, sir. So you mean righties just go on insulting me, see if I care.

No, what matters to me is what my colleagues and real world friends think. And they’re not either losers who can’t race reality and retreated to a cow-college campus like I did! Stop saying that! They’re important and smart, and darn it, they like me!

In fact, it’s amusing to me how wrong you guys read me based on politically partisan fantasy. In fact, it’s helped direct me to my current research project.

So, to summarize, I don’t care what you think because it’s a partisan fantasy, and I just come here to research you as an example of backwards culture like some kind of African tribesman. But that definitely does not mean I’m being smug and condescending! It does not either mean I’m talking down to you or that I have an irresistable impulse to come here to find someone to talk down to! Stop saying that! And stop laughing!

So hurl your silly insults, see if I care. I’ll chuckle at how you get so riled up by me. Chuckle, chuckle, chuckle. See, you don’t affect me in the least! You don’t, I said! I decree it!

      • So hurl your silly insults, see if I care. I’ll chuckle at how you get so riled up by me.

        DooDooHead! 🙂

  • Here in the Hoosier State I have done nothing but shovel global warming all winter. Yes, we do have climate change four times a year: winter, spring, summer, and fall. The whole arguement was foolish and the propponents of global warming now are making themselves sound ever more so trying to explain this winter. It doesn’t exist in the manner they contend; that is, man made.

  • Both Erb and AlGore have gone dark on this issue. Strange.

In a just world, Jones, Gore and the rest who tried to game us should be hung. Would be a nice lesson to the next generation of pseudo-scientific grifters looking to cram something down our throats

    • I’d settle for them being completely humiliated, to the point that they have to work on a garbage truck to make ends meet.

But that won’t happen. As I commented over at Daily Pundit:

The thing that depresses me about all this is that Phil Jones will probably come out of it OK after a bit of a whitewash and admitting that some of his more egregious claims were, as he would probably put it, “overstated”.

That is, he and others like him get to lie for two decades, cover up, violate laws, and try to cost the human race trillions of dollars to promote their own careers, and the fallout for it will be minimal because he’s a leftist.

The leftist media, were the situation instead about a researcher on the right who had done a tenth as much bad stuff, would hound him until he was a broken man.

With this criminal, they’ll prop him up as long as they can, and then if he does have to suffer any consequences, they’ll wait a few years for people to forget the details and then the conventional wisdom on wikipedia will be that he was a martyr. The truth about his activities will be minimized at best, or airbrushed into non-existence at worst.

      • I concur completely.

      • Well said.  ‘Ooops, my bad” just doesn’t cut it sometimes, and it CERTAINLY doesn’t cut it after years and years of deliberately continuing the same bad behavior.  O’ course, Jones and the rest will NEVER apologize or admit that they were wrong.  Why should they?

      • Funny how the left fervently denounces characters such as David Koresh and Jim Jones, and yet willingly buy into and  follow their own prophets.  The difference is that with films such as Fahrenheit 911, An Inconvenient Truth, and Avatar, worship is  diffuse, the prophets speaking on millions of VCR/DVD players.

        • Jim Jones was pretty much a communist. IIRC, they even had plans to move to the USSR or some other commie country.

While they were still in the states, I think they got some kudos from other domestic leftists. Of course, once the kool aid was handed out, they became just a bunch of religious kooks, their political orientation forgotten.

      • I’d settle for them being completely humiliated, to the point that they have to work on a garbage truck to make ends meet.

        >>> I’ll settle for it……but it’s nowhere near enough.

    • You posted too fast; Erb is doing a fine self parody in the newer AGW thread.

  • This doesn’t quite fall into the weather as climate …

Following a cold snap in the Northeast, Lake Erie’s surface is virtually frozen over for the first time in about 14 years.
The ice ranges in thickness between paper thin along the northern shore and several inches along the southern shore, where many people are ice skating. reports that the lake hasn’t completely frozen since the winter of 1995-1996.
Although the ice cover is considered complete, prevailing winds have created some cracks in the ice.
There are also reportedly ice chunks floating off the coast of Dunkirk, N.Y., which is one of the deepest parts of the lake and would naturally be one of the last places to freeze.

  • Even if the very worst of the predicted calamities that Global Warming (GW) might trigger were real possibilites, such as those depicted by Al Gore’s docufiction, AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH, it would still be insane to look to governments through legislatures and laws to do anything to ameliorate GW, because governments are incapable of reacting responsibly to anything like GW–except to make matters worse. Why  hell’s fire, congress can’t manage the federal budget, over which it is in complete control. How would anyone be so foolish as to believe it could manage the earth’s climate? Those many GW alarmist/scientists who in the face of irrefutable evidence to the contrary have been claiming that “the science of GW is settled” are obviously lying. And if they would lie about that, why believe anything they say? I don’t. Furthermore, if GW is a real problem and some scientists are legitimately concerned, those scientists had better stop addressing themselves to legislators and heads of state and focus on they only people who can do anything productive to stop GW–you and me. I will trust government to confront GW when it demonstrates that it has the skill to establish permanent  peace worldwide.
