Top Kill works – thank goodness!

Short post on the good news from the Gulf:

Engineers have stopped the flow of oil and gas into the Gulf of Mexico from a gushing BP well, the federal government’s top oil-spill commander, U.S. Coast Guard Adm. Thad Allen, said Thursday morning.

The “top kill” effort, launched Wednesday afternoon by industry and government engineers, had pumped enough drilling fluid to block oil and gas spewing from the well, Allen said. The pressure from the well was very low, he said, but persisting.

Once engineers had reduced the well pressure to zero, they were to begin pumping cement into the hole to entomb the well. To help in that effort, he said, engineers also were pumping some debris into the blowout preventer at the top of the well.

Of course the huge clean-up continues so neither BP or the Federal government are off the hot-seat yet.  But hey, Obama said “plug the hole” and they did!

Who says that’s not leadership?

Now he can spend the whole weekend in Chicago chillin’ instead of visiting the striken Gulf or honoring the fallen at Arlington National Cemetary as Commander-in-Chief in the midst of two wars.

No sarcasm intended there.

  • A well-earned rest for a job well-done.
Now, on to lowering the level of the seas!  Or, creating even one private-sector job…

  • Well, you know he promised he’d visit Chicago, and a promise like that is…..much more important than any old oath of office thing.
Besides, crisis managed, and right in the nick of time too, things were starting to get uncomfortable, even the press was getting unruly.

  • so far so good.  and it is time to honor our vets.   and yet the sour pusses still can’t leave it alone.  it must suck being you all the time.

    • Nope – doesn’t suck at all. In fact, I ‘m quite happy and satisfied being me.

What does suck is having a CiC who can’t take the time, especially during active 2 wars, to go to the traditional venue and honor those who’ve fallen.

      • IMHO Quite frankly our Bower-In-Chief  hasn’t the right to desecrate Arlington’s  Sacred ground. Let him go golf and let the people who really appreciate the sacrifices made by these Warriors visit.

      • What does suck is having a CiC who can’t take the time, especially during active 2 wars, to go to the traditional venue and honor those who’ve fallen.

        >>> Do you really want this guy there though? So he can mouth some platitudes he clearly doesn’t believe and get a bit of a rub from men and women far far better than him?

    • Pedro, I know our traditions don’t mean spit to you (we’ll play the illegal immigrant game for a sec), but we have em.
Right now, today,  I don’t feel particularly sucky about being me, or adhering to my traditions, and I don’t feel bad criticizing the guy in the White House who thinks like you do, that the traditions don’t mean spit.  Course in his case it’s because everything is all about him, not because he’s actively trying to send a message.  He’s just a narcissistic dumbass, and I guess I should forgive him for that… bowing to the King of Saud.
nah….on second thought, he has a staff that probably told him what he should do, and he’s doing what he wants, and he doesn’t CARE.

      • My observations are Obama is a narcissistic smart ass and Bush was the narcissitic dumbass.

        • Believe that if you like.  I don’t think either Barry or George would make a rocket scientist.  Difference is, right or wrong, George led – Barry….mailin it in.  George is smarter than they made him out to be and Barry…sure makes that teleprompter sound eloquent doesn’t he?

          • Believe that if you like.  George was never much of a leader though he did try.   Bless his heart he never did get the teleprompter thing down, but I guess ineloquence served him better than eloquence serves Imeme/Barry.

          • A fellow who can give a stirring rendition of Henry V doesn’t qualify to be King of England just because he can read Shakespeare aloud without stumbling over the words.

          • And I’ll take George’s so called ‘attempts’ to lead over anything I’ve seen this President manage.

        • Yo Tea Pot Ted:
I have never seen Tea Party people calling Bush anything! They seemed to be focused on the problems at hand, like government overspending. Try to focus Tea, the D-E-M-O-C-R-A-T-S are in power now and whatever Bush did is irrelevant.  I think you need to put the bong down and step away from the table!—–CONEY

          • Mr. Burns ( I guess from the Simpsons) five trillion added to the national debt under Bush is irrelevant?  Yep about one trillion for the two wars, and about four trillion other.  Who needs to step away from the bong, or is five trillion irrelevant?

    • Oh, and on the TopKill thing – yeah, WOOT!  Let’s hope it continues to work, and I don’t CARE if it ends up making Imeme look good in the process, this is bigger than politics.

  • And, just as an aside…  IF I EVER hear Obama say he’ll “Never rest until such-and-such“, I’m gonna plotz.  He’s all talk, and destructive action.

  • And, I assert that the take-away here is that enormous environmental damage has been CAUSED by stupid environmental policy.
And it will get appreciably worse.

  • I’m looking at the live feed at 11:15 PDT and “something” is still gushing out of breaks in the pipe:

  • Obama says he’s the one:
“WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama defensively and sometimes testily insisted on Thursday that his administration, not oil giant BP, was calling the shots in responding to the worst oil spill in the nation’s history.”
“I take responsibility. It is my job to make sure that everything is done to shut this down,” Obama declared at a news conference in the East Room of the White House. The Gulf of Mexico oil spill dominated the hour-long session.”

    • That was hilarious.  After the fix looked like it was going to take, Obama finally steps up to take responsibility for the fix.

  • Pedro

    Shove it.

  • Obama also declined to be at the Arlington Cemetery memorial services.  What a president!!

  • I’m very, very glad that the efforts to get the leak plugged are working out.  If so, then at least that part of the crisis is over.  The people in the Gulf, especially those who earn their living from the sea, have a long, hard road still ahead of them.

As for Imeme… Well, what can you expect?  His activities have pretty much been limited to golfing, vacationing, blaming and threatening BP, throwing a tantrum, and now “taking responsibility”… when the leak appears to be plugged, no thanks to anything he’s done.  He points the finger while demanding that the finger-pointing stop.  His partisans are (wait for it!) blaming BUSH for it.

As for his refusal to go to Arlington, I’m conflicted.  On the one hand, it’s remarkable classless and clueless for him to vacation instead of adhering to tradition (why is it that the only promises he keeps involve his own pleasure?).  On the other, that sh*tstain has about as much business on that hallowed ground as Fred Phelps.

    A pox upon him.

  • If they finally really did get thid thing plugged then I predict that the whole thing will be cleaned up very quickly.
You cannot compare it to the Valdez spill at all. In the first place that was in a much smaller body of water, it was in a very cold body of water, and heat does help with dispersal, and it was heavy crude, not sweet crude like in the Gulf.  It will disperse and bacteria will eat it all up over the summer.

  • Lets hope he gets to spend as much time as he wants in Chicago after 2012

  • If he attends a memorial service in Chicago, I think I am okay with that. If he does that and then plays golf somehow…not good. Seriously, if McCain played golf this much, the media would have come up with “Grim Milestone in Afghanistan while McCain plays 32nd round.” meme already.
