And you wonder why we’re getting involved in Syria?

A growing number of Americans believe that senior White House officials ordered the Internal Revenue Service to target conservative political groups, according to a new national poll.

And a CNN/ORC International survey released Tuesday morning also indicates that a majority of the public says the controversy, which involves increased IRS scrutiny of tea party and other conservative groups seeking tax-exempt status, is very important to the nation.

Look, Obama’s legacy is important to Democrats because it may mean victory or defeat for the next Democratic presidential candidate. And like it or not, a scandal plagued 2nd term isn’t going to help his legacy or the Democrat’s next chosen presidential candidate. In fact, one of the reasons Obama is in the White House now is the successful negative portrayal of the Bush years by the left and the press.

In the case of Obama, the press and done it’s best to dampen the reach of the scandals, but it is, for once, failing in it’s endeavor. The scandals are too wide ranging and hit too close to home to fears the citizenry has held concerning government’s abuse of power. And make no mistake, these scandals are all about abusing power.

Last month only 37% of the public thought that the IRS controversy led to the White House, with 55% saying that agency officials acted on their own without direct orders from Washington. Now the number who say the White House directed that IRS program has increased 10 points, to 47%, virtually the same as the 49% who believe the IRS agents acted on their own.

“Younger Americans are much less likely than older Americans to believe in White House involvement, and there is, not surprisingly, a partisan divide as well,” says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland. “But the Obama administration may be losing independents on this matter. In May, only 36% felt the White House ordered the IRS to target conservative groups; now that number has crossed the 50% threshold.”

Of course naive youngsters who really haven’t been around for or paid attention to scandals of the past, certainly might want to believe their idol, Barack Obama, is involved in this. But you can see as well as I can, as more and more info comes out, that minds are changing. This is a serious shot at the Obama legacy. Or at least that’s what 51% of Americans are saying:

Fifty-one percent of those questioned said the IRS controversy is a very important issue to the nation, compared to 55% who felt that way in May. In the past week and a half, the IRS story has been put a bit on the backburner, as the controversy over the federal government’s massive surveillance program has dominated the spotlight.

Ironic, no? The 4% drop I mean. It has dropped as a “very important issue to the nation” because another scandal has popped up.

So what’s the Obama playbook say you do when it goes from bad to worse?

  • Oh. Goodness…
Apparently, normal people are better at connecting the dots than DHS is.
    Oh, Errrrrrrrrrerpppp… Over to you…

  • I say it’s you and your lock step minions who are distracting from current issues by bringing up old news in an effort to blunt Obama’s ability to lead!

  • Wag … meet Dog

  • “What I’m saying is, that if you haven’t been in the Situation Room, poring through intelligence and meeting directly with our military folks and asking, what are all our options, and examining what are all the consequences, and understanding that for example, if you set up a no-fly zone, that you may not be actually solving the problem on the zone,” he said. “Or if you set up a humanitarian corridor, are you in fact committed not only to stopping aircraft from going that corridor, but also missiles? And if so, does that mean that you then have to take out the armaments in Damascus and are you prepared then to bomb Damascus? And what happens if there’s civilian casualties. And have we mapped all of the chemical weapons facilities inside of Syria to make sure that we don’t drop a bomb on a chemical weapons facility that ends up then dispersing chemical weapons and killing civilians, which is exactly what we’re trying to prevent. Unless you’ve been involved in those conversations, then it’s kind of hard for you to understand that the complexity of the situation and how we have to not rush into one more war in the Middle East. And we’ve got –”

  • The “scandals” have already faded – there was nothing there. Naive Obama-phobes may want to imagine that Obama was ordering investigations and the like, but nobody who understands the process could possibly believe that. Again, you’re in Onion territory. Ever wonder why your readership is down? You’ve become a caricature.

    • Sorry, Obamaphile, it’s still top news.

You don’t seem to understand what a real charicature is. I suggest you consult the nearest mirror.

        • He’ll just claim that roughly half the country are racist and/or Obamaphobes.
He becomes more and more Baghdad-Bob-like as this goes on.

          • Oh, I’m sure, because that’s what most other “progressives” do — as if no one ever opposed the Left before Obama came along.

Obama is nothing. When he is gone, he’ll be replaced by some other Mr. Thompson figure who sounds and acts just like him. But the Left is so smitten with him that any perceived slight against the man registers as a (psych term incoming!) narcissistic injury, to which the response is always rage.

          • He becomes more and more Baghdad-Bob-like as this goes on.

Surely he can’t believe that anyone who reads his missives will be persuaded. Narcissism, delusion, boredom-driven trolling, …. Who knows why he bothers?
            Who cares?
Hell, I love occasionally jumping into a comment section filled with frothing, self-righteous “liberals” to refute their statements. When a dozen mindless zombies attack you at once, it can be intimidating, but careful attention to principles and the resolution to cite facts in support of your argument does wonders to drive them away. Eventually, “liberal” moderators tend to ban people like us. Scott, on the other hand, has no principles, no ability to cite pertinent facts (just tangential, irrelevant ones), so there’s no reason to ban him. He’s the entertainment around here, with his own dedicated spoof.
If he only saw himself as other do, we’d have to find some other form of levity.

      • There is nothing to date addresses the invasive questions that targeted groups received from the IRS.
The source of these question will ultimately determine what violations of Section 1203 of the Internal Revenue Code are applicable.

    • The “scandals” have already faded – there was nothing there. Isn’t it wonderful that you have someone completely non-ideological like me to come here and tell you that? To tip you off that one side hasn’t done anything wrong of consequence and the other side totally manufactured these scandals?

Yep, that’s what smart, non-ideological, dispassionate, non-emotion driven people like me do – carefully explain to dense righties that they are wrong about everything, all the time. And of course I do it completely as a public service because you are so mis-informed, and never ever out of any emotional satisfaction I get from talking down to you inbred, sterile righties so that I can stop thinking for just a few precious moments about how my wife kicked me out for being a jerk, and I’m now living in a tiny apartment while being stuck in a low-paying job at a rural moose college that doesn’t even grant PhDs. Stop saying all that. You’re just jealous because you don’t have the luxury of shaping young minds, in a completely non-ideological fashion of course.

Naïve Obama-phobes may want to imagine that Obama was ordering investigations and the like, but nobody who understands the process could possibly believe that. And that’s not either a strawman because people around here never claimed it. Somebody claimed it, somewhere. So I get to hold you responsible and keep harping on it. And no, I don’t have to furnish any links that you claimed it or that anyone anywhere claimed. It’s just intuitively obvious to a trained political scientist like me that this is the way you thick righties think about such things. No additional evidence needed.

Again, you’re in Onion territory. LOL. LOL, I say. {chuckle} for good measure. And than Onion stuff is not either something I pull out when I know you’ve got a point but I’m too cowardly and clueless to grasp or counter it. Stop laughing.

Ever wonder why your readership is down, even though the average number of comments is the same which would indicate stable readership? No? Well, you should. Because you’re pitiful. You’ve become a caricature. Unlike me, who is certainly not a caricature of a pompous leftist academic with no affect and therefore unable to keep relationships going and is forced to live alone in a small apartment with a regretable vulnerability to magenta caterpillars with Sarah Palin’s face, naughty librarian glasses, and ample bosom.

    • No, but I do wonder why you read and/or comment here, since it’s mostly content that will appeal to inbred sterile former military right wing racist ignorant red stater hicks (like me) and not intellectually superior moderate pragmatic progressive geniuses like yourself.
It shore are a puzzle fur me now and agin. I reckon you be here to larn us sumptin hey?

    • “but nobody who understands the process could possibly believe that”
And Nixon didn’t have an enemies list, and Bill Clinton did not have sex with that woman, Monica Lewinsky.

    • And tell us again about wise pragmatic Obama arming the guys destined to lose. Or do you think perhaps his REAL goal is to arm the rebels NOW to allow the slaughter to be prolonged so that as many Syrians as possible can be killed in the ongoing struggle.

    • Obama has had more real scandals be ignored than any president in history. The list is long and shameful. The lack of interest until after the election by the press, and Obama’s unwillingness to make any changes has harmed our nation. And you don’t care a whit.
McCarthy went after communists and this was a bad thing, we all agree. Obama’s IRS went after mere Tea Partiers and you are cool with that. I assume you are also ok with agency heads using secret emails, charging different rates for FOIA requests, and asking people about the contents of their prayers.
If you truly believe in democracy, you would not be so eager to glide past these scandals.

      • McCarthy went after communists and this was a bad thing, we all agree.

Even as apologists raised a hue and cry, insisting that the poor victims of the “witch hunt” were innocent, decades later, the Soviet archives demonstrated that a number of those “victims” were Soviet agents.
I do not agree that it was a bad thing to uncover Soviet agents. The methods were the issue.

    • See if you can identify the straw man you set up in your post Erb.
      Then eff off.

    • You’ve become a caricature.
Um… Pot. Kettle. And a REAAAAALLLLLLY un-self-aware kettle, too…!!! I mean, even as kettles go…

    • Groundless! I say groundless rumors son, nothing but groundless rumors! two rumors, three rumors, four rumors, two nothings is still nothin boy! That’s mathematics, son! You can argue with me, but you can’t argue with figures! Two half nothin’s is a whole nothin’! And when it comes to nothing son I know what I’m talkin’ about!

  • Readership down? Oh, you mean the disconnected sitemeter stats. Yeah, it was slowing down our page load time so we 86ed it. Readership, per our server stats, is doing very well.

    • No, no. He has scientific consensus for that claim. And quantum calculations…sans math.

  • what if they held a war, and everyone just said screw it?
