That outdated concept called “academic freedom”

“Outdated” because it confilicts with liberalism.  Here’s a senior at Harvard’s view:

In its oft-cited Statement of Principles on Academic Freedom and Tenure, the American Association of University Professors declares that “Teachers are entitled to full freedom in research and in the publication of the results.” In principle, this policy seems sound: It would not do for academics to have their research restricted by the political whims of the moment.

Yet the liberal obsession with “academic freedom” seems a bit misplaced to me. After all, no one ever has “full freedom” in research and publication. Which research proposals receive funding and what papers are accepted for publication are always contingent on political priorities. The words used to articulate a research question can have implications for its outcome. No academic question is ever “free” from political realities. If our university community opposes racism, sexism, and heterosexism, why should we put up with research that counters our goals simply in the name of “academic freedom”?

Instead, I would like to propose a more rigorous standard: one of “academic justice.” When an academic community observes research promoting or justifying oppression, it should ensure that this research does not continue.

And what is it called when one promotes the quashing of dissenting views that they find to conflict with their ideas?

Call is “social justice” or whatever you choose, it is plain old, Brand X “oppression”.

That’s right.  Every oppresive regime in the history of our world has been intolerant of dissent and has taken action to quash it.  Here we see the same old tired argument presented by a liberal to further the cause of liberalism.  Don’t want to hear any dissenting voices, oh no.

And yet this newly trained “scholar” presents this as if it is a brand-new, brightly minted and spectacular idea. She’s a senior at Harvard and “is a joint history of science and studies of women, gender and sexuality concentrator”.

No kidding. What a surprise. There seems to be quite a concentration of potential oppressers in that particular field of study. There certainly seems to be a dearth of critical thinkers however (she probably comes from the school of “it hasn’t worked properly yet because I haven’t been in charge”).  It’s a pity she didn’t take a run-of-the-mill world history course or two to see who else in the past has shared that bright idea with her.  Past hell, there’s are entire countries which have implemented that exist now.

China, Cuba and North Korea come to mind.

  • Which research proposals receive funding and what papers are accepted for publication are always contingent on political priorities.

Frankly, this by itself, is a huge admission.

  • “academic justice.”
    Sort of like consensus science.

  • This diatribe has the feel of the “the longest suicide note in history” (the UK Labour Party’s 1983 election manifesto).
What university would grant tenure to Sandra Y.L. Korn ?

  • “academic justice” = “interest of the volk” = “purposes of the People”
You can lipstick that monster every which way language will allow, but it is always the same monster.

    • More comedy from Academia – Academic justice – that we should rightly refuse to study/acknowledge/consider/fund/allow things that we find personally distasteful or disagreeable to our sensibilities and opinions of oppression in the pursuit of knowledge and understanding.

      • …while at the same time insisting on taking the production of others at the point of a gun for our use in pursuit of our vision of “research”.
I wonder how long U.S. Marxist economists would survive if they had to solicit their own funding.

        • There clearly is some sort of problem for academia to grasp the concept of “diversity and inclusiveness.”

          • Scratch a Collectivist, find a totalitarian/authoritarian.  Plus, it is a matter of religious dogma to them.
            Right, Erp…???

          • Interesting, isn’t it, that “progressives” always seem so…REGRESSIVE?
Earth First used a saying “Back to the Pleistocene”, and that’s progressivism to a tee – reversal back to a primitive, tribalist culture. That’s what you get when one group plays the semantic infiltration game with terms like “liberal” or “progressive”, or “consensus science”.

          • “Return To Zero” as Ed Driscoll has written about often.  Like the Pol Pot regime.  They were just “full blooded” about it…quite a few peoples’ full blood.

      • Just wait till she and her cabal get hold of that Copernicus guy, heliocentric indeed.
Denying the earth mother as the center of the all, white male oppressor bastard!

  • Ahhh the arrogance of the modern academic… so sure that they will always be the “we” and that progressive ideologies will never end up in a circular firing squad (just ask Alec Baldwin how that works out).

  • Another fine example…
    Working on her BS
Followed by her MS (More “S”)
Topped off with her PhD (Piled Higher and Deeper)
Perfect drone for the ben(mal?)evlolent rule of Ozymandias-on-the-Potomac and his gang of Chicagoland political thugs.  She’ll fit right in.

  • At least Whoopie-cushion Goldberg had the (rare!) clarity of thought when talking about the glories of Communism as a philosophy, that “It looks good on paper, but the main problem is that it has to be implemented by human beings.”
    Gee, ya think?

  • State education: nothing new, really; it goes back 2,400 years or more, and included several of our Founding Fathers.

  • Shoot.  Let’s get rid of anemic freedom and federal grants.

  • Speaking of oppression, your tax dollars, and almost certainly progressives…..cause I seriously doubt this video was promoted by social conservatives.
Take aways…Just remember kids, Sado masochism can be fun AND safe!
Learn to be a helpless victim in a sexual way, learn to victimize others in a sexual way, practice your techniques both as victim and victimizer, but remember, have fun and be safe!
I wonder if the Duke Porn star will help film their next tax payers subsidized video.

    • Maybe Mother Jones should do an article on the outcomes of teaching kids about safe sadomasochism….global warming.
Global warming is not for everyone, please consult your physician before practicing global warming.
Global warming may cause rapes, tornadoes, snow storms, polar vortexes, hurricanes, meteors, flooding, drought, deluge, monsoons, siroccos, El Nino, La Nina, various tia y promos,  famines, plagues, disease, hotter temperatures, cooler temperatures, freezing temperatures, cooler oceans, warmer oceans, more polar ice, less polar ice, higher electrical costs, increased gasoline prices, contamination of ground water as a result of fracking, wealth transfer, smog in Asia, missile shields in China, volcanic eruptions, earth quakes, tsunamis, radical costly ineffective economy destroying feel good government policies and regulations, dead protected species birds sacrificed in the name of saving the environment, taxpayer funded payouts to political contributors, more world government, less freedom.
If you experience any of these symptoms and are a denier, you will be billed, detonated, or otherwise suitably punished, now, depending on availability of qualified professionals.   Otherwise you should write or contact your President, Congressman, Senator, local state Representative or college professor and let them know you’re willing to give up your life style and fork over your earnings for the next 50 years to save the snail darter if only it will mean confiscating the weapons of red necks and preventing them from buying any vehicle other than a Prius (your mileage may vary).

  • I hate to speak ill of anybody who worked really hard to accomphish something, but “a joint history of science and studies of women, gender and sexuality concentrator”.  Please.
She or somebody else is paying $50,000 a year (probably actually more) to go to Harvard.  In the end, she will have a degree that qualifies her for a $30,000 a year social worker job (or something completely outside of this field).
Colleges and universities should be required to show a prospectus for each degree they offer, with all the same disclaimers required under Dodd-Frank of a stock brokerage .. and make each student sign a statement that they understand that the degree they are about to enter into has a most probable career path that pays .. in this case .. nothing.

  • There can be no reasoning with such a person as this.  And the indoctrination factories are churning out thousands of little fascists like her annually.

  • any time a modifier is placed before “justice”, you can be damn certain that true justice is not the sought after outcome.

  • “history of science?”  WTF?  She’s not studying actual science … or history … just the ‘history of science.’  Just buy the Connections box set, chicky, it’s less expensive and you might actually learn something valuable.  Of course given the other concentration, learning isn’t really her cup of tea.
