  • For some reason, there is a meme going around that Crimea is Russia’s only warm water port. That’s simply not true. They have several along their own Black Sea coast, including NOVOROSSIYSK which is Russia’s biggest grain exporting port, and has a modern naval base that cost billions to build and houses their helicopter carriers, etc.

    Sevasatopol is actually aging, and the pro-Russian ex-president was bickering with Russia about it anyways way back in September.
    A big difference was that Ukraine would not allow Russians to have nuclear arms in their ports.
