New White House priority? Climate change!

Apparently tomorrow, President Obama will “showcase” his climate change agenda.  According to the Washington Post:

After years of putting other policy priorities first — and dismaying many liberal allies in the process — Obama is now getting into the weeds on climate change and considers it one of the key components of his legacy, according to aides and advisers. He is regularly briefed on scientific reports on the issue, including a national climate assessment that he will help showcase Tuesday. He is using his executive authority to cut greenhouse gas emissions from power plants and other sources, and is moving ahead with stricter fuel-efficiency standards for the heaviest trucks. And while he routinely brings up climate change in closed-door meetings with world leaders, according to his aides, he also discusses it in his private life, talking about global warming’s implications with his teenage daughters.

As usual, he intends to proceed by using executive power, whether or not the people or their representatives agree.  And also without any consideration of the cost to the consumer.  All in the face of mounting evidence that the supposed crisis of CO2 is a non-crisis. According to the WaPo, this intention to address “climate change” was spurred by Obama viewing satellite pictures of the California mountain snow pack:

The satellite images viewed by President Obama before a meeting with eight Western governors were stark, showing how snowpack in California’s mountains had shrunk by 86 percent in a single year.

Of course, most of us know that’s likely a local weather phenomenon, not a result of “global warming” or we’d be unlikely to be seeing things like this:

Antarctic sea ice continues to set new records, with extent in April at the highest since measurements began in 1979.

Remember, Antarctic and Arctic sea ice melts were to be the harbingers of doom.  In fact, the Arctic was supposed to be ice free last year according to the perpetually wrong alarmists.  Instead we saw record sea ice there as well.  Factor in the fact that there has been no global warming for over 17 years and one has to ask why this, in the face of a badly performing economy and over 92 million Americans being out of work, is suddenly to become a priority for the White House?  As one editorialist puts it:

The problem is, it’s just so hard to be an alarmist these days. Temperatures aren’t rising, U.S. CO2 emissions are down, and now it turns out that peak oil won’t peak. What’s a scare-monger to do?

The answer is keep on trying to gin up the alarm to satisfy the true-believers who are an important political constituency of the Democrats.  And it is becoming clearer every day that the Democrats are going to need all of their constituencies to even have a ghost of a chance in the November mid-terms.  To this point, the left environmental movement hasn’t been to happy with the Obama administration and it certainly wants more drastic action to be taken to curb the use of fossil fuel. So its time to shore up their support:

Environmentalists such as Democratic donor and billionaire Tom Steyer want him to veto the Keystone pipeline and wean the nation from natural gas. Natural Resources Defense Council President Frances Beinecke said of the administration: “We have to increasingly get them to acknowledge that there has to be a major transformation away from fossil fuels.”

That desire the Natural Resources Defense Council voices has resulted in such things as the “war on coal” and the reduction in production of oil on federal lands and off our coasts.   It has also meant slow walking the permit process as well as holding the Keystone Pipeline hostage to presidential politics. So why now? Why is this the time to do this?  Because he can:

A White House official, speaking on the condition of anonymity because the plans are not final, said Obama has made it clear that he considers climate change a priority and is less politically constrained now that he no longer faces reelection.

Meanwhile the public views the issue as a low priority if a priority at all, given jobs and economic problems.  Yet Obama persists.  Elections are in the offing.  And if there is one thing he has at least a semblance of competence in, it’s getting elected (or helping others do so).  So all the high flying rhetoric aside, this is about votes, this is about elections and this is about trying to preserve at least one Democratic house in Congress for the last two years of his presidency.  It is one of many such moves he’ll be attempting in the coming months.  But make no mistake – this isn’t about the environment or his legacy, it’s about politics. ~McQ

  • Once again, NBC was out to scare its viewers about the threat of man-made climate change. Appearing on the Sunday, May 4 NBC Nightly News, Ann Curry narrated a 2 minute 30 second piece that attempted to instill panic in its viewers about the supposed dire state of the world’s climate.
Curry began her report by showing video of cars falling off of a street in Baltimore, Maryland after a heavy rainstorm before bemoaning that this “is one example of extreme weather events that may be more common in the future.”

Which would be comical if it weren’t so dangerous.  As delusional nonsense goes, it does not get any worse in terms of its potential for enormous harm to people and there well-being, including their standard of living and liberties.
But ScamWOW IS firming up all the splinter-groups that he hopes will come to the polls this election.  You can count on him stirring the race pot(s), the feminists, the enviro-fascists, the “inequality” obsessed, etc., and more etc.  What choice does he have?  He can’t run on his record.

    • If they’re so concerned, they should (in the immortal words of Mike Tyson) “turn off their station”
After all, a major network consumes many resources that could be be left with Gaia.

      • But then how would they hector us dense righties out here in the swamp?  They have a Manifest Destiny…just not the audience numbers of Duck Dynasty

Seriously – that was a railroad cutting probably built back in the Victorian age judging by the stone work and the arch on the tunnel entrance.    Blame on the jackweeds who came later and didn’t keep it maintained, because that cutting was built by people who were pretty much convinced (and proceeded to prove it all over the world) that man COULD conquer a lot of nature.

      • Deep Blue city, Baltimore.  No other explanation needed.

        • Even if we don’t ask it to prove that it’s the 29th street viaduct when it shows up to vote, infrastructure doesn’t vote for your candidates, I get it.

    • Money.
Societal Control using every lie in the book to achieve their goals.
The NeoCommunists aren’t even trying to hide it anymore.

  • “Come see what’s going on at Smith Electric,” the president said, inspecting a table full of bright green truck batteries in what was once a maintenance hangar for TWA. “I think they’re going to be hard-pressed to tell you that you’re not better off than you would be if we hadn’t made the investments in this plant.”
—Pres. ScamWOW, a few short years ago
Smith Electric is going belly-up.  So, no, Pres. ScamWOW…not so “hard-pressed” at all.  Like your other central planning fluck-ups…including ObamaDoggle…EVs have come a cropper.
Let the markets do their “magic”.

  • It’s about time he got around to some serious issues! After all anytime you have a “conesensus” of scientist calling for prompt action, action should be taken! GOOD GRIEF!

  • OT:
I was thinking about the use of social shaming to get Eich to quit, and just realized that if its okay to do this against SSM opponents, then it would seem that the Hollywood Blacklist just got fully legitimized, no?
McCarthyism can no longer be used in a bad way.
Espouse a repugnant belief, and you can find yourself out of work.
If its true for Christians then it should be true for communists.

  • engineering farm animals for global warming.

“The researchers were in the vanguard of food scientists, backed by millions of dollars from the federal government, racing to develop new breeds of farm animals that can stand up to the hazards of global warming.”

Because, you know, the animal husbandry market could NEVER and WOULD never address that problem on it’s own!

What about the Polar Bears and the Mooses (Meece? Meeses?)   Write your congressman!  Demand the government fund studies to develop new breeds of wild animals that can survive global warming!

    • Do we really need Polar Bears with their own ice saws?  I mean, think about it…

      • I wanted the polar bears with the thermo cooling suits so you can’t pick them up on infrared and with reactive camouflage!   And faster, and bigger, and with fricking laser beams on their heads!
        And armor, more armor!
If particle beam weaponry has to wait a while I can get by without that.
And moose armed with laser guided mortar rounds!

        • You just want a Farmington-ghazi.  I know your murderous knuckle-dragger heart!
Moooselims with modern weapons…  Maine would fall in a matter of days.

          • They would only bring their mortars to spontaneous demonstrations brought on by Coptic beavers insulting their beliefs and would never pre-plan such a thing.   To suggest otherwise would be silly and Mooselamiphobic.

    • Next they’ll be getting grants to make snakes to produce oil for them, to make further money-making easier.

      • I was wondering where all this snake-oil was coming from… it’s being subsidized.

  • White House adviser John Podesta told reporters Monday afternoon that Congress could not derail the Obama administration’s efforts to unilaterally enact policies to fight global warming.
Podesta said that the president was committed to using executive orders to pass regulations under the Clean Air Act to limit carbon dioxide emissions that they say cause global warming.
“They may try, but there are no takers at this end of Pennsylvania Avenue,” Podesta told reporters at a Monday press conference at the White House.
    Dictator. And outlaw.

  • Deniers are complicit in the delay to mitigate CO2 emissions, the delay that leads to hundreds of thousands of deaths per year, 88% of them children (World Health Organization, American Academy of Pediatrics),  The author is part of that “proud” tradition.  In one minute spent to debate the question additional energy equal to over 200 Hiroshima atomic bombs are added to the biosphere.
I hope you debate necessary action if and when a bus careens down upon you.

    • You do understand you’re daft, right?

      • Freed, as in freed from reality. One can guarantee anyone citing “Hiroshima bomb equivalents” is a low-info drone with no comprehension of the world outside their X-Box.

        • I shoulda asked for citations to moonbat sources from which those astounding numbers derived.
          I mean…88% children.  Not 87 or 89%.  Such precision!
Conversely, we had the vague “hundreds of thousands” of deaths, and “over 200” Hiroshimas going off in the “biosphere”.  Sounds really scary.  All nuclear, an’ stuff…  And (shudder) we are “complicit”.

          • The 88% figure seems to be from something like this
I haven’t bothered trawling the references. But it is so full of “coulda, woulda, shoulda” that it is pretty worthless.

          • I’d say it was entirely worthless.  The authors…like our current EPA Admin….can’t even manage to keep Gorebal Climate Whatever separate from “pollution”.  Morons!

          • Also worth remembering is that the Hiroshima non-sequitir was first put out by James Hansen in a Ted talk (James Hansen of “death train” fantasies). It was shortly after picked up and used by John Cook at the badly misnamed “Skeptcial Science”, the same John Cook who with his pals likes to dress up in Nazi military costumes and posted to the SS forum (SS, hah! some nice subconscious selection of name for that site). So the whole thing devolves into some leftist fantasy about being Nazis… and who are the crazy deniers again???

    • All rather convenient that the single largest component in Man Made warming is something that can be easily monitored and bought and sold isn’t it?
Want to talk about hundreds of thousands of deaths and other settled consensus science….Let’s talk about banning DDT shall we?
Sorry, back to human forced warming through carbon dioxide emissions.  What are you proposing to do about it?  What solution(s) do you have that will stop it?  Which countries are on board to join you?
Can you show us the science that demonstrates (n) amount of carbon dioxide either extracted and sequestered or not put into the atmosphere equals (n) degrees less warm on a global scale?
You’re certain it’s causing it, there must be a formula that proves it, or is this something you feel must be happening?
While your answering that, on another slightly related topic…Can I ask if you favor dancing backwards at midnight in the local cemetery while swinging a dead cat over your head to cure warts?

    • This is a joke right? Like the Onion?
If not, than I am a denier, I will always be a denier, I’ll deny everyone who lies to me, without bias and without exception.

    • Troll, here is a handy AGW debunking video for you. It uses small words to aid your understanding and cartoon characters to hold your attention. You’re welcome.

    • Actually green energy leads to increased use of coal, at least in Germany. Why do greens hate the world so much?
If anyone was serious about CO2 reduction, the path forward would center on nuke power for the grid, and fracking for NG for transportation. The fact the left hates nukes and fracking shows how serious they are about the “problem” of CO2.

      • I’ve also read of late that German forests are getting “harvested” by poor volk who prefer not to freeze to death or go without food.
You can either use the excellent “concentrated biomass” in the ground, or you can burn biomass for basic human-needs fuel.  You will NEVER produce enough via wind or solar using any real technology.

        • Aside from nasty coal and oil, the immediate future should belong to NG and nukes, and the nukes should be breeder reactors (f*ck Jimmy Carter). Long term my hope would be for fusion. I think fusion is the sort of tech that deserves some government money for research, if any such money should be given out.
Wind is hardly high tech, it hasn’t been used much because it doesn’t make sense. Solar is more high tech then wind, but also makes little sense. Solar has two problems that really should be obvious to all: low energy density and poor duty cycle. Also, I’ll note that solar seems to be very regressive in the sense that tax money pays for part of it yet the people who use it tend to be rich.

    • Besides, Harry Reid has discovered the main cause of climate change.
      It’s the Koch brothers.
“While the Koch brothers admit to not being experts on the matter, these billionaire oil tycoons are certainly… experts at contributing to climate change. That’s what they do very well. They are one of the main causes of this. Not a cause, the main cause,” Reid said.”
I only wish that was one of my usual sarcastic humor attempts.

      • I bet you could fit the entire carbon footprint of Koch top executives in Pres. ScamWOW’s…not counting MooooOOoochelle’s.  Or Bo’s.

        • Reid is a menace.  No wonder they send him back to Washington, they don’t want him wandering around loose in Nevada where he might harm someone.

          • I think the conversion from hydro power to any carbon-based means of generation, with the costs applied to the Vegas Strip, would be very interesting.
Harry best keep his gob shut.

          • Isn’t there a smelt or a Dingyfish fish of some kind that needs protecting which will require us to shut down the Hoover Dam power complex, destroy the dam, and allow the Colorado to flow again unvexed to the sea?

  • The Environmental Protection Agency’s little-known Office of Homeland Security has illegally blocked investigations by an independent watchdog for years, an inspector with the agency’s Office of Inspector General will tell Congress Wednesday.
Patrick Sullivan, the assistant EPA inspector general for investigations, was expected to testify Wednesday before a House oversight committee about the activities of the Office of Homeland Security, a unit run by President Obama’s political staff, The Associated Press reported.

The office of about 10 employees is overseen by EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy’s office, and the inspector general’s office is accusing it of operating illegally as a “rogue law enforcement agency” that has impeded independent investigations into employee misconduct, computer security and external threats, including compelling employees involved in cases to sign non-disclosure agreements.
“Under the heavy cloak of ‘national security,’ the Office of Homeland Security has repeatedly rebuffed and refused to cooperate with the OIG’s ongoing requests for information or cooperation,” Sullivan wrote in prepared testimony obtained by The Associated Press. “This block unquestionably has hamstrung the Office of Inspector General’s ability to carry out its statutory mandate to investigate wrongdoing of EPA employees.”
Wow.  You’d think these enviro-fascists were above the law…  Good thing we have a Constitutional “scholar” in the Orville Office

Well. It looks like John Hinderaker wants a piece of Michael Mann’s…er…hide, too…!!!
