Ideological redefinitions by the left

All my life, racism has been defined as you see it below.  It is a “belief” that your race is superior to other races based on nothing other than racial characteristics, such as skin color.

racism [ ˈrāˌsizəm ]

1. the belief that all members of each race possess characteristics or abilities specific to that race, especially so as to distinguish it as inferior or superior to another race or races.

2. prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against someone of a different race based on the belief that one’s own race is superior.

Racism, then is displaying the “prejudice, discrimination or antagonism” to others of different races based on that “belief”.  Makes sense.  Simple. Direct to the point.  Racists think they’re superior to other races because of the color of their skin.

However, as such, the definition is unacceptable to the left.  For the left it fails in two particular areas.  It means that, based on this definition, anyone can be a racist which means, then,  it doesn’t allow them to identify and cultivate a victim class (or in this case, race) while excusing what they perceive as an oppressive race.   Useless.  The solution?  Move the goal posts.  Redefine the word so it has a more culturally useful meaning for the left.  Too many people were pointing out that the definition was something that correctly identified all races as susceptible to racism.  No good.

Enter academia.  What better place to make this happen than by pitching an ideologically biased new definition to those impressionable students who walked their hallowed halls?  Here, for instance, is how the University of Delaware defines racism:

A racist is one who is both privileged and socialized on the basis of race by a white supremacist (racist) system. The term applies to all white people (i.e., people of European descent) living in the United States, regardless of class, gender, religion, culture or sexuality.

Now the left has a useful definition. Now the oppressors are clearly identified as is the victim class.  This allows them to “capture” the victim classes into their entitlement schemes.  And, of course, when you load in the race baiters such as Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson, a virtual cottage industry is created in which the discontent this sort of nonsense inspires is kept hot and fresh.  With this definition, all whites are racists, have been forever and will be forever if the left has anything to do with it.  This definition conveniently removes the expiration date from the definition and gives it a forever fresh date.  With the first definition, it is obvious that it depended on a “belief” – a belief which could be changed.  However with the second definition, that belief is relegated to irrelevancy and now, per the left,  racism is only based on the color of one’s skin.

Ironic, isn’t it?

  • I have held for years that the def liberals use has much more to do with culture than with race.

How else to explain the relax to conservative blacks such as Walter Williams, and Thomas Sowell, to name two?

    • I think “ideology” is better than “culture”. And the Collective hates nobody with such red-hot execration than a “victim class” member who declines their victimhood and crosses out of the Plantation.

  • Way back in the first wave of racial sensitization. ‘Prejudice’ was often thrown around hand and hand with racism. Pre-judging someone’s character based on some association of race, religion, or any number of elements what wrong.

The word is hardly used in association with racism anymore. The reason is in part is can be too universally applied. But also, the Left’s entire approach now is based on it. The latest re-definition of ‘racism’ is predicated on it. They try to get people to pre-judge conservatives, republicans, etc.

  • The Delaware definintion (I’ll call it) has the nice, neat quality of implying everyone who is “white” (my kids used to say we were “peach” because that is the Crayola we match) simply MUST do penance for their racism.

This sweeps in “white Hispanics”, too, along with Asians in most cases.

To which I politely respond, “SCREW THAT!” I look forward to the day when we put all this bullshit behind us. The Collective has been actively pushing that day into the future, and Barracula has been a positive “extend-0-tron” in terms of race tensions in America. Indeed, I can’t recall when they were THIS bad, even though I have a clear memory of the 60s. There was a sense in those days of forward movement and hope. Partly, I suggest, because we were not beset by the Collectivist crap of the Delaware definition and its like.

    • Right on brotherrrr! (We white folks actually pronounce the ‘r’s). Say it loud, I’m white and I’m proud!

    • On this, we agree. My family was on the Union side in the Civil War. Fought at Gettysburg. Screw these goram people who think I and my family “owe” them because of our skin color. Screw them for declaring us “guilty” with no end in sight.

I prefer the Andorian term “pink skin”. Too bad Enterprise was such a bad show they should’ve added Shran to the crew.

well, it does when one shoots a black guy. (zimmerman, anyone?) but somehow, it never works that way when a black guy shoots a hispanic.

      • “it never works that way when a black guy shoots a hispanic.”
That’s never about ‘race’ (don’t get me started on hispanic being a race…) it’s always about, uh, sneakers, or a girl, or something that has absolutely nothing to do with, no sir, uh uh, not about, race, at all, ever, never, never, never.
It’s about want, or poverty, or love, or anything except race.
Now for entertainment, let’s talk about an organization called ‘The Race’.

  • This is how get Hutus and Tutsis.

    Good job liberals!
