SOTU: infomercial for low info voters

Facts – hard to beat.  Easy, though, to put nonsense out there (especially when you have an hour of prime time TV to yourself) and have it believed by enough people that will never see the corrections.  Even AP couldn’t quite stomach the baloney Obama put out:

Among the claims the AP finds less than truthful in the piece, entitled “FACT CHECK: Obama claims credit for an incomplete recovery“:

  • “At this moment – with a growing economy, shrinking deficits, bustling industry and booming energy production – we have risen from recession freer to write our own future than any other nation on Earth.”

Actually, the AP notes, “By many measures, the economy is still recovering from the deep scars left by the Great Recession.” Unemployment has been steadily decreasing, but that’s driven primarily by a growth in low paying jobs and people leaving the labor market. There are still 1.7 million fewer workers with full-time jobs than in December 2007 when the recession began.

  • “I am sending this Congress a bold new plan to lower the cost of community college — to zero.”

The cost of community college isn’t being lowered to zero, the costs will simply be shifted elsewhere. The AP estimates it would cost “an estimated $60 billion over 10 years to the treasury.” Furthermore, the plan would require states to contribute a quarter of tuition, and not all students would qualify.

  • “Wages are finally starting to rise again. We know that more small-business owners plan to raise their employees’ pay than at any time since 2007.”

While business owners are indeed reporting that they “plan” to increase wages, “there is scant evidence that it is happening yet.”

And that’s just a very small part of the propaganda Obama put out there.

Frankly I think Emily Zanotti (I’m a big fan of hers) summed it up best:

The State of the Union is an infomercial for low-information voters and an excuse for DC staffers to get blindingly drunk on a weeknight.

Pretty much.  I’d only amend it to say that it is the party of the President who gets to present the infomercial (because few if any watch the other party’s rebuttal).  But yeah, it’s a whole bunch of preening and lying laid out for those who will look no further.  It’s also an exercise in bias confirmation for others.

Modern politics.  What’s not to love?

Yeah. ‘Cuz they are doing all that other stuff sooooo well…

Is this the Peter Principle for BIG GOVERNMENT? Or were we fully Petered long ago…????

    • That story made me think of this dialogue from “Demolition Man”:

John Spartan: I guess you’re not a part of the *Cacteau Plan* are you?

Edgar Friendly: What? Greed, deception, abuse of power? That’s no plan.

John Spartan: That’s why everybody’s down here?

Edgar Friendly: That’s right. You see, according to *Cacteau’s* plan. *I’m* the enemy. Because I like to think, I like to read. I’m into freedom of speech, freedom of choice. I’m the kind if guy who would sit in the greasy spoon and think “Gee, should I have the T-bone steak or the big rack of Barbecued spare ribs with the side order of gravy fries?” I *want* high cholesterol. I want to eat bacon, butter and buckets of cheese alright? I want to smoke a Cuban cigar the size of Cincinatti in a non-smoking section. I wanna run around naked with green jell-o all over my body reading a Playboy magazine. Why? Because maybe I feel the need to okay pal? I’ve *seen* the future, you know what it is. It’s made by a 47 year-old virgin in gray pajamas soaking in a bubble bath, drinking a broccoli milkshake and thinking “I’m an Oscar-Meyer Wiener”.
You wanna live on top, you gotta live Cacteau’s way. What he wants, when he wants, how he wants. Your other option: come down here, maybe starve to death.

      • Never saw that film but after this I sure will check it out!

        • That moment was a rare moment in the movie. Most of the movie is an attempt at comic relief of Stallone being the Bull in a China shop of prudishness and to a lesser extent political correctness.

  • I did not watch this SOTUS or the last one. The one before made me furious and nauseous. If Obama had clacked his cuff-links on the podium ONE more time, I would have plotzed.

    • I figure if Progressive magazine writers can come up with movie reviews for films they haven’t seen, I can live without the SOTU

      • Matt Taibbi saw the movie, he knew he wasn’t going to like it ahead of time, but he did at least see it before he wrote the review he wanted to write without having to see it.
Did you know, for starters, that a sniper shot over a mile is impossible? Yep. impossible.
I mean, forget that some guy managed a 9/10 of a mile shot with a Sharps .50-90 rifle back in the 1870’s before you bother to read on for the record mile+ shots made with more modern weapons….
5 seconds to fact check that, but Matt knows it can’t be done because it was done in the movie and it made people cheer.
        and it made him unhappy

  • As with his previous SOTUs, this one was done for one reason only – to allow his base to celebrate they have a President in their corner. And by doing this, he expects them to continue to put pressure on the rest of America to either join up or shut up. Obama believe deeply in negotiating with his opponents – the problem is that his definition of negotiation is different – to him negotiation means “My way or the highway.” And to his base this is everything. To do anything less is to compromise with those he really finds abominable, America and those who love her.

  • Nothing quite like having pathological lying scum as the President of the United States. But that’s what Marxists do, they lie, and when they are caught they lie some more, and then they go out and mock the people who know that they are lying in front of people who are easily fooled by cheap lying sophistry. Ultimately, it’s those people who are humiliated, who get nothing but are expected to squeal “This shit sandwich is great!”

  • Furthermore, the plan would require states to contribute a quarter of tuition, and not all students would qualify.

And here I heard that those costs wouldn’t be passed on to the states, but rather would be paid out of Barack Obama’s personal checking account, with his pension fund as a backup in case he runs low.

  • I’m amazed the low info voters bother to watch a SOTU at all. I’m certain they do not. The SOTU is for wonks, pundits and the Democratic pep squad trying to convince their team they can still win this in the last quarter,

Meaning the only low info the low info voters are going to get comes from the very media, in the case of the AP, that is decrying the mis-information coming from the Liar in Chief.

Come next week they’ll tell us the economy is picking up, the number of available jobs has increased, unemployment is down, Obama is presiding over an unbelievable drop in oil prices, etc, etc, etc.

  • “When what you’re doing doesn’t work for fifty years, it’s time to try something new.”

Did Obama announce the end to the War on Poverty in the SOTU ?

  • “We’ve long suspected the Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission wasn’t honest in examining events before the meltdown. But an ex-commissioner says the probe was actually a full-blown political cover-up. In a just-released book, former FCIC member Peter Wallison says that a Democratic Congress worked with the commission’s Democratic chairman to whitewash the government’s central role in the mortgage debacle.”

Yep. Lies. All up and down. But they were lies only someone with NO understanding of economics would buy (yo…ERP…!!!). Just like all the lies that Pres. ScamWOW told the other night.

    • In that particular case, the imbecilic position of the left just infuriates me. They claim that the entire mortgage industry just went spontaneously crazy and started pushing loans that probably would not be paid back. This is an industry that’s been around for decades, making money, and according to leftists, they just went collectively insane in some bizarre pursuit of hypothetical profits. (This matches their stereotyped image of the rapacious private sector, so it doesn’t really matter whether it’s true – it *feels* right.)

The Left never, ever wants to look at or acknowledge the role of the government in all this. Establishing a dumping ground for loans, and pressuring lenders via threatened lawsuits over racism to loan more to low-income borrowers, were bigger factors than any collective craziness on the part of staid bankers.

Sure, the industry participated in rationalization of their changes, by using new math to calculate risk of bundled securities, and such. But they didn’t light the match to start the fire.

      • Nor are they paying much attention to the possible beginnings of “imbecilic position part deux” in bad lending practices reincarnated.

      • Right! Markets TEND to react RATIONALLY to incentives and disincentives…even when those come as the result of MASSIVE distortions (which ONLY come from GOVERNMENT).

I said LONG ago that I took violent exception to George Will depicting house-flippers as “greedy”. They were just doing EXACTLY what one would expect rational market-players would do. See Warren, Elizabeth for ONE such example.

Mortgage lenders were…left to their own STANDARDS…among the lowest-risk players in the capital markets. They were lending on secured assets to people who had a demonstrable ability to service their debts. All that went balls-up when the BIG GOVERNMENT “brights” tinkered with the system.

And we got EXACTLY what was predictable and predicted.

      • By the Left’s reasoning, if a rattlesnake (GSE/FedGov) bites your leg and introduces poison (Politically Correct garbage loans) into your circulatory (banking) system, it’s your bloodstream’s fault for killing you.
