  • The intelligent debate in comments died partly because of the establishment of echo-chambers but primarily because the Left had no stomach to carry Obama’s water. I used to ‘game’ in the early 2000’s and a competition website for it, a group of us on the left & right and in between had hijacked the general forums into a political forum. Its was roughly balanced. There were many lively debates there. The quality and decorum degenerated some, but it just up and died with month of Obama starting to hit his stride. It was clear after attacking Bush for almost 8 years, the same folks had no interest being on the other end and just left.

Generally for the Left, the debate was good when winning for them scored points to undermine Bush and Republican reputations for future elections and if they lost, the loss went down the memory hole and they just moved on to a new topic to attack. Defending Obama, they can’t gain territory by engaging in debate, only lose so they’ve chosen to retreat to echo chamber and concentrate their moral superiority.
