Let’s dump the Confederate flag. And let’s also dump the “Congressional Black Caucus, La Raza, etc.

Victor Davis Hanson makes the point that what once began as an exceptional experiment in unity and was often dubbed “a melting pot”, has now become a grouping of humorless and easily offended factions always trying to claim the mantle of victimhood:

In the last half-century, Americans have increasingly tended to emphasize race and tribe in promoting “diversity,” rather than seeking to strengthen the more tenuous notion of unity with their fellow citizens. We have forgotten that human nature is fond of division and must work at setting aside superficial tribal affinities to unite on the basis of core values and ideas. Symbols, flags, organizations, and phrases that emphasize racial difference and ethnic pride are no longer just fossilized notions from the 1960s; they are growing fissures in the American mosaic that now threaten to split the country apart — fueling the suspicion of less liberal and more homogeneous nations that the great American experiment will finally unwind as expected.

So the answer?  Dump all the symbols and organizations that divide.  Drop the race exclusive organizations like La Raza and the Congressional Black Caucus.  Either that or keep your mouth shut when someone starts the National Association of White People.

You can’t have it both ways.  And remember something that is indeed unique about this land:

In an America that was originally founded by mostly Northern European immigrants, a Juan Lopez from Oaxaca is freely accepted as a U.S. citizen in a way that a white Bob Jones would never fully be embraced as a citizen of Mexico, a country whose constitution still expressly sets out racially chauvinistic guidelines that govern immigration law. Someone who appears African or European would have a hard time fully integrating as a citizen in Chinese, Korean, or Japanese society, in a way not true of Chinese, Koreans, and Japanese in America. The world assumes that in America a president, attorney general, secretary of state, or Supreme Court justice can be black; but it would be as surprised to find whites as high public officials in Zimbabwe as to find a black as prime minister or foreign minister in Sweden or Germany.

We are Americans and we come from all sorts of places and backgrounds, but when we come here we do indeed assimilate into the dominant culture?

Why?  Because it is that culture (which, by the way, is borrowed from some of the best of many different cultures) that has made this country both exceptional and great.  It’s is the “go to” place for those looking for a better life.  Our illegal immigration problem points to that.

But if the left has its way, we’ll all hyphenate our “american” identity, claim victim status and work to divide the polity into bickering hate groups who find everyone else (to include those back through the centuries) at fault for their status.

Were there wrongs committed in history against various races and ethnic groups?  Of course there were.  But we don’t live in that era.   What counts is where we are today.  If those wrongs no longer exist then any progressive worth their salt should be claiming … progress.  If you’re as old as I am, you don’t have to claim it – you’ve seen it up close and personal. But instead of touting the progress, progressives are the ones leading the charge to divide and weaken.  To make us all “victims”.

Quite being victims.  Victimhood is a choice. Grow a backbone and say no to the negativity of that nonsense. Drop the symbols and groups that emphasize race and/or victimhood.  Become Americans.  Work together.

See Charleston for how it is done.

  • I’m impressed by the number of people who are giving themselves the squirts over ANY symbol of the Confederacy who will gleefully march under or behind the red banner of Communism, or who wear a Che’ t-shirt or keffiyeh.

    What about the NAACP?

    • How about removing Grand Kleagle Byrds name from the courthouse it adorns?

  • Liar, NAACP certainly accepted a white woman to head their Seattle chapter.

  • someone starts the National Association of White People

Isn’t that what this ratbag Roof complained about? Not being able to find anyone to start a group with? Honestly, as a white dude/dudette do you really want to associate with some other random dropkick just because they are white?

A little anecdote… I’ve been an immigrant in Sweden for over 10 years. Being of entirely Northern/Western European descent I only stand out when I open my trap. I did try going to a club in Stockholm for other ex-patriates from the mother country but stopped after a couple of visits. Because it was just too… damn… stereotypical… it felt like being in a cartoon. It was time better spent yakking with the neighbors. The point? Erm… I think something like an association of white people will be rather like Mensa, just a sad gathering of people who identify via some label. Anyhow, whites split rather 50/50 in most two party systems so there is no political advantage.

    • White Male Strike. We should pick a day and stay home and watch the fur fly. Just the fact we acted as a group would have the world in fits. I mean half the people supports Obama’s crap solely on the fact is upsets the right. Let’s return the favor.

OTOH, white people tend to act as individuals. Most have a sense of self-reliance/determination and personal accountability. We don’t feel the need to flock to the reassurance of a group and shield our personal accountability in a group association where we are victims by association because of wrong committed to other men decades or centuries ago. .

      • wrong committed to other men decades or centuries ago

I dunno. I am still holding a pretty large grudge against the English and the lowlanders for the Highland clearances that led to my family emigrating. Unfortunately I also have English ancestors who emigrated, which kind of ruins the grudge. On the other hand, I do have an American ancestor about a century or so ago. Likely he was a racist so it balances the clearances. Unless he was black, which I don’t know… then I double my winnings in the ancestral victim stakes. There is also a Pole lurking around the roots of the family tree, so that probably explains why I don’t much fancy Germany. But damn, Russia is a nice place to visit and the women are lovely, but they also messed over the Poles and ruined the Swedish empire for my children.

Sheeeit, keeping track of the grievances is f***ing hard for a white dude after only a couple hundred years.

        • oh man, the method is to let your color be your guide.

In your case you might as well sit down, you ain’t goin anywhere.

          • Sweden, summer … damn straight I ain’t going anywhere. Stockholm and its “sights” have to be seen to be believed on a good day 😉

I’m awondering when it will soon be unacceptable to express an opinion over what skin tones one finds attractive in a mate. Or if one is even allowed to find a mate attractive. Sometimes it is really not too hard to imagine that we’ll soon end up in a place like that.

          • Heh, I was at a presentation yesterday by HP part of which covered the “internet of things” –
Things that will monitor every last thing you do.
No mention of who’s going to pay for having them put up everywhere.

Oh, but it’s so coooooooollllllllll, like, wow, data man, and sensors, and Google Fabric man….

Just wait till all that data gathering starts impacting certain sections of ‘culture’.
            I’m glad I ain’t 12.

          • Oh, but it’s so coooooooollllllllll, like, wow, data man, and sensors, and Google Fabric man….

And all it will be used for in the end is better, faster, cheaper porn.

          • LOL!
Exactly! I wanted to say that when he was talking about the increase in data and the uses of the sensors and so forth – DUDE!!!! at least 40% of that will be dedicated to BETTER, FASTER, PORN!!!!!

I shudder to think of what the future will be like.
Worse than any of the dreaded ‘neighborhood grandma spies’ we heard about when we were fighting off the evil RED menace back in the day, that’s for sure.

          • DUDE!!!! at least 40% of that will be dedicated to BETTER, FASTER, PORN!!!!!

You say it like its a bad thing…

    • I suspect a meeting of Mensa would be much like walking into a room of Barack Obama-s. Yes, insufferable.
Every member of Mensa I’ve ever met was an … a-hole.
Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy the company of smart people .. I just don’t enjoy the equivalent of break dancers trying to do swing dancing.
I prefer my smart people with basic social skills .. and a large dose of humility..

If a flag is ray-ciss, what about this guy? And, yes, I do know that this bigot has a right to free speech, and a flag does not.

I also know that some of the worst bigots in this country are like this puke…

“Practically the whole region has rejected nearly everything that’s good about this country and has become just one big nuclear waste site of choleric, and extremely racialized, resentment,” the Daily Beast’s Michael Tomasky.

And yet black Americans are moving to the South from the North.

    • Louis Farrakhan said pretty much the same stuff …

Later, he declared, “I don’t know what the hell the fight is about over the Confederate flag. We need to put the American flag down. Because we’ve caught as much hell under that as the Confederate flag,” comments that were meant with cheers and applause. He added, “Who are we fighting today? It’s the people that carry the American flag.”

      • Hey, isn’t there a Federal Prosecutor in New York who should be issuing subpoena’s and gag orders to Louis Farrakhan for these bombastic threats like he did for Reason’s commentariat?

  • Attacking the flag is an attempt to put a thumb in the eye of millions who have a variety of reasons for attachment to it. They are egging on retaliation by a tiny minority in there that is feels compelled to act violently..
“More Roofs, if you please.” is their alternate agenda

    • Now we have a film critic calling for the withdrawal of Gone With The Wind from this year’s release.

      I kid you not!

      • Next, it will be the withdrawal of “Alien” and “Aliens” because they were misunderstood extraterrestrial undocumented aliens who were oppressed by “The Woman”

  • Diversity: Newspeak for Balkinization.

  • With the rush to remove references to the Confederacy and slavery from public places, institutions and so on… shouldn’t it logically follow that the political party responsible for the Confederacy, which most slavers belonged to or voted for and which fought the Civil Rights Act tooth-and-nail, also be disbanded?

    • I think the reason for the Democrats to get rid of the Flag was the same reason the Germans kept trying to plow under Nazi structures when no one was looking. The desire to eliminate uncomfortable reminders of their history.

    • I learned something from Mark Levin last night that I found quite insightful.

Wilson Federalized Jim Crow as a major push in his administration. The Federal government had been quite integrated between the Civil War and the Wilson presidency. He changed that as a matter of high priority.

  • Nah, the last Confederate Democrat died instantly after Edward Kirby Smith surrendered Kirby Smithdom in the Trans-Mississippi.
Just like the last NAZI died when Hitler shot himself in the bunker.

Yep, all gone, no more of em.
Those dudes in the bed-sheets burning crosses and lynching folks, they were Nixon Goldwater Southern Republicans.

  • Next on the list to be banned … Woodrow Wilson (progressive Democrat) who extended Jim Crow laws to the federal government.

President Woodrow Wilson. The white people of the country, as well as I, wish to see the colored people progress, and admire the progress they have already made, and want to see them continue along independent lines. There is, however, a great prejudice against colored people. . . . It will take one hundred years to eradicate this prejudice, and we must deal with it as practical men. Segregation is not humiliating, but a benefit, and ought to be so regarded by you gentlemen. If your organization goes out and tells the colored people of the country that it is a humiliation, they will so regard it, but if you do not tell them so, and regard it rather as a benefit, they will regard it the same. The only harm that will come will be if you cause them to think it is a humiliation.

    … who knew ?

    • It is funny to suggest removing all these dreadful old men from the public eye. But I think you’d better be careful even joking about it. Educated people who care enough to read about history more than what they get at school will find it amusing. But imagine this all starts happening and the likes of Wilson and other racists of the past are removed from public view. Don’t you think this is what the leftists want? Erase their own dark history by taking those names out of public view so that very few people will even recognize them in a generation? The slave-owning past of America will then be even easier dumped on the awful right-wing conservative whites who thankfully were defeated when Obama burned the Confederacy flag. They’ll homogenize the Civil War era into a fight between the progressive North and the conservative South. Who controls the past controls the future. Who controls the present controls the past.

      • The narrative doesn’t allow that version. Whites only freed slaves out of some sense of self-interest of some kind and that’s the way the story will stay.

  • I guess that we should take some comfort from the fact that nobody is calling for all copies of To Kill A Mockingbird to be burned.

    So far…

    • Yeah, but Mark Twain is in the dumper, I’m sure.

      • I think Forest Gump and Steel Magnolias are safe for the moment.

Pretty sure Fried Green Tomatoes is good, ’cause they eat a white abuser.

        • But American Civil War games with a “Confederate Flag” (even though there is also a US flag too) are apparently NOT to be sold now according to Apple.

You know, it’s nice that reality ran right to Reductio Ad Absurdum over this “Confederate flag” (Army of Northern Virginia/Battle Flag of the Army of Tennessee) thing without anyone having to suggest it might happen.

          • Does anyone know how I can remove the swastikas from the graphics when I play Panzer General? When I play a World War II game I do hate to be reminded that, you know, Nazis were involved.

          • There will soon be a requirement to modify the Union Jack, and the Flag of Scotland, because after all, the Cross of St. Andrew is the same one used on the “Confederate Flag”.
So the flags of Alabama and Florida have to go too.

All those flags make guns kill people.

  • Is it just me, or has the speed of this train suddenly been increasing lately?
