Ignoring the question … again

The Orlando shooting gives our president the chance to finally answer the question millions of Americans have been asking for years:

A young American Muslim pledging allegiance to Islamic State is now responsible for the largest mass shooting in U.S. history. Can we finally drop the illusion that the jihadist fires that burn in the Middle East don’t pose an urgent and deadly threat to the American homeland?

We hope so after the Sunday morning assault on the Pulse nightclub in Orlando that killed at least 51 and wounded 53 as we went to press. The killer was Omar Mir SeddiqueMateen, the son of immigrants from Afghanistan who was heard shouting “allahu Akbar” (God is great) as he fired away. Mateen attacked a popular night spot for gays, who are especially loathed in Islamist theology.

Well no, we can’t “drop the illusion” because, guns!

That’s right, never let a tragedy go to waste and certainly never let a tragedy redefine your agenda priorities.  Islamist terrorism? Bah, never heard of it (or at least never have admitted to hearing of it).  Instead call those who try to identify the problem “Islamaphobes” … and screw the 911 call in which the killer pledged allegiance to ISIS or the fact that witnesses say he was yelling “allahu akbar” as he gunned down his victims or the fact that per those who knew him he was intensely homophobic as is his claimed religion.

Instead, let’s talk about guns:

Reporter Peter Doocy asked White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest: “Does the President really think that common sense gun laws would deter terrorists now that he has admitted that these two may have been terrorists?”

“Yes. The president believes that passing common sense gun laws that makes it harder for people with bad intentions to get guns, makes the country safer,” responded Earnest.

“But so the president thinks that when there are potentially two terrorists sitting around planning a mass murder they may call it off because President Obama has put in place common sense gun laws?” Doocy shot back.

“Why wouldn’t we make it harder for them? What’s the explanation for that?” responded Earnest.

This is the face of insanity.  Why wouldn’t we make it harder for them?  To do what?  Ignore the law?  Maybe someone ought to tell the fools in the White House that those who plan on committing mass murder don’t normally worry about breaking laws.  In fact, it is pretty well known that criminals avoid getting their guns where the left thinks “common sense gun laws” would stop them cold. This is really not rocket science for heaven sake.  And, as usual, the left and the White House seem absolutely clueless about human nature.

A recent study that was conducted by the University of Chicago’s Crime Lab has learned that Chicago criminals do not acquire their guns from gun shops, gun shows or the internet.

The study examined and interviewed inmates in Chicago’s Cook County Jail who are either facing current gun charges, or have a background consisting of firearms related convictions.

The study learned that virtually zero criminals have ever used the internet or gun shows, because that method is easily traceable. It’s much safer for a criminal to acquire firearms on the streets where they’re harder to keep track of, and that’s most criminals method of choice.

Furthermore, University of Chicago Crime lab co-director, Harold Pollack, said that criminals “were less concerned about getting caught by the cops than being put in the position of not having a gun to defend themselves and then getting shot.”

Does the point that “virtually zero criminals have ever used the internet or gunshots, because that method is easily traceable” resonate at all?  Seems “common sense gun laws” are already doing what they’re supposed to do, however, criminals, as they’re likely to do, have decided not to play the game. They’re not going to risk getting caught.  They’re going to go outside the law.

So, then, what’s the point of more laws if not to deny criminals guns?  Seems that’s working rather well.  Is the purpose, then, of more laws, to further hobble legitimate and peaceful gun owners perhaps?  To make it harder and harder for law abiding citizens to own the means of defending themselves?

And what has any of that nonsense to do with what happened in Orlando?

Why, after another tragedy obviously perpetrated by a militant Islamist, is the question still being ignored!?

  • There appears to be good evidence that this killer should have had a record of domestic violence. Under both Florida and Federal law, that MIGHT have been enough to prevent him from buying his guns.

But it is easily possible that various systems…including the family law in Florida…failed to act as designed.

As the often excellent Williamson points out, we don’t lack laws. We sometimes lack enforcement and adherence.

    • A wife beater that was on the FBI’s radar three times legally buys a gun and this is common sense gun control? The DNC is stuck on stupid.

      • Yep. How do you get “common sense gun control” when you subtract the whole “SENSE” component from the equation?

      • If being on the FBI’s radar was enough to block you from owning a gun, under Obama we would all be on their radar.

The real problem is we let people immigrate here with contempt for our society in such numbers they can pass sentiment to their children and create an environment where that sentiment can prosper.

        • And not only no motive to be assimilated, but adhering to a religion that practically forbids it.

  • “So, then, what’s the point of more laws if not to deny criminals guns? Seems that’s working rather well. Comey has just admitted they knew the guy wanted to martyr himself in 2013. They, that’s the FBI, they knew.
You’d think maybe in their gun backgroundy checkie thingie system that they might have made a note of that and when he went to purchase the “AR-15 LIKE MACHINE GUN ASSAULT LASER DEATH MASS MURDER KILLING WEAPON GUN BOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!” he might have failed the background check, right?
You think that might have even showed up in his employment background check, for a security agency, that contracts to DHS.

    Well, no, not really.
So let’s pass some more laws, institute some more checks, and then ignore things that might have been legitimate concerns when they come up.
    Feeling safer yet?

And, well, it’s only sort of a check system, it’s mostly a registration system, with maybe a couple of hooks to see if you’re purchasing a weapon who’s serial number might demonstrate it was possibly used in a previously committed crime. And they don’t keep the records for very long, no no no no no, not at all, heh heh, trust us!

But next time you’re filling out form 4473 ask yourself…
If it was just a check to see if YOU should own a gun, of any kind, what difference does it make if it’s a .556, 30-06, .308, .22, etc? A rifle, or a shotgun, or a pistol?
Why would caliber or type matter if all they’re checking to see is if YOU can buy a gun?

Yeah, so, registration system, as was made completely obvious with the guy from Atlanta who’s pistol was used to shoot the cops in New York in 2014, when they tracked it back to him, after he’d sold it to someone else after he’d bought it,
    in 1996….
Yet….there it was, came home to roost, with him, the last ‘registered’ owner of the weapon, from 1996……which record of course is only kept for any lengthy period in a bound paper copy book, at the pawn shop in Atlanta, for 20 years – nudge nudge grin grin wink wink.
“Although the information from your NICS transaction must be deleted after a relative short time period, the Form 4473 must be kept longer. It is required to stay with the FFL dealer for at least 20 years after the transaction. If the FFL goes out of business before that 20 years is up, the records must be sent to ATF for records keeping. In this case, ATF will keep the records but does not centralize or aggregate them, nor does it maintain a registry.”

Huh, if it’s not a registration system, how did they do that? They tracked it back from the murder to the pawn shop to the purchaser in less than 4 days – using a paper book system stored in an Atlanta pawn shop, see?
Well, maybe they had some help from other places, unnamed, but not the Federal governments system, “ATF traces the weapon by running the serial number against various databases” Yeah, uh huh. And probably the first of the ‘various databases’ is their data base, which of course, they don’t have, because they had to delete the information, nudge nudge.

Cause it was the ‘gun’, and the fact that we can buy them, and that they’re ‘assault style’ weapons, and America’s hatred of homosexuals, that did this.
and the ‘terrorism’ is domestic, against gays,
and has nothing to do with a religion from the Middle East that weekly throws homosexuals off of tall buildings as a form of execution, in a country from which we’re taking in 100 refugees a day.

  • “Furthermore, University of Chicago Crime lab co-director, Harold Pollack, said that criminals “were less concerned about getting caught by the cops than being put in the position of not having a gun to defend themselves and then getting shot.”

It seems that even criminals aren’t completely stupid–“Better to be tried by twelve than carried by six”.

  • We wouldn’t have to have this discussion every time a weapon is used for a crime if the citizenry of the country, and the politicians (in theory I repeat myself), would acknowledge that the weapons serve the purpose of keeping the politicians or people appointed or hired by those politicians in check.

All of this foofaw extends from the fact that we’re nationally squeamish about admitting one of the purposes of the 2nd Amendment is citizens might someday have to use armed force against their own government if it egregiously betrays it duties and becomes a tyranny.
It is the 2000 lb elephant standing in the room with the 2nd Amendment written in large friendly print all across a banner draped over both sides.

Instead we have to listen to ‘self defense’ and especially ‘hunting’ as the only reasons it exists.
If we acknowledged it was partially to protect us against soldiers, someone else’s or God forbid our own, it would be understood why our personal weapons had to be closely akin to those an army would deploy against us on a man to man basis, and we wouldn’t have to pretend we were going deer hunting with an AR-15 with 5 30 round magazines.

      >>> Spot on. The founders went to war with access to basically the same level of weaponry as the Brits for the most part. In any discussion of the 2A, someone always gets around to (what they think is) the abducto ad absurdium when they ask “would the founders want the people to have Rocket Launchers?” and it boggles their minds when I answer “yes, I think so”

Of course, that presupposes the founders believed the citizenry would be responsible enough to use/not use weaponry properly. TODAY’S citizenry as a whole? If the founders knew what a stupid irresponsible nation of dimwits we’ve become I do believe they’d have struck the 2A and maybe scrapped the whole independent nation project in the first place

      • I always enjoy the asshat that trots out ICBM’s, Carrier Task Forces and the occasional low end guy who brings up tanks and asks how an AR-15 can stop that.
If tanks and artillery and strike aircraft and ICBMS were always the only deciding factors, we wouldn’t still be in Iraq, Afghanistan and every other little hell hole we’re stuck in being shot at by people armed with rifles and pistols.
We wouldn’t have spent 20 years slogging around the jungles and highlands of Vietnam if bigger better more powerful weaponry was all that mattered.

        • Two yobbos and a pressure cooker effectively caused Boston to be shut down for 2 days.

      • Well, you must admit, they might not have had an inclination to pledge their lives, fortunes and sacred honor to the project just so a bunch of socialists could dumb it down to a bleating mass of sheeple owned by oligarch rump nobility 240 years later.

  • So what do we know about the most recent shooter ?

    He was a registered Democrat.
He had a state security guard license.
    He had Muslim roots.
    He was a wife beater.
He cheered for the terrorists on 9/11.
    He was gay.

A former classmate of Omar Mateen’s 2006 police academy class said he believed Mateen was gay, saying Mateen once asked him out.

    • You forgot, “the gun made him do it”

      • But really, why do we get stuck with the mess of gay-on-gay crime by a wife-beating Muslim Democrat ?

        • Because once again the who and why for the crime doesn’t matter since they don’t fit.
Dead gays, assault rifle, secretly we all know it was a climate of hate caused by republicans and Donald Trump and white males don’t we?

          • Called it –

“Hate crimes don’t happen in a vacuum. They occur where bigotry is allowed to fester, where minorities are vilified and where people are scapegoated for political gain. Tragically, this is the state of American politics, driven too often by Republican politicians who see prejudice as something to exploit, not extinguish.”

  • Is 0bama so stupid as to not know why we have a Constitution?
Or is his agenda to destroy it with Political Correctness?
    Because It can’t be both.

    • I’ll take “destroy it” for $200 Alex.

      • Our Puppet President CERTAINLY knows all about the Constitution. He told us early-on that he didn’t like that it only had “Negative Liberties”: “… generally the Constitution is a charter of negative liberties. Says what the states can’t do to you. Says what the Federal government can’t do to you, but doesn’t say what the Federal government or State government must do on your behalf …”

He knows what’s in it, he knows what’s permitted-and-forbidden, and he does whatever he damn-well pleases anyway, in total defiance of the Founders’ intentions. (And the only time the so-called Opposition Party mentions his over-reach and deliberate flouting of the law is when they’re on the campaign trail grubbing for votes and cash. When it really counts, ie when Congress is in session, they are as silent on his transgressions as the other half of the Uni-Party is.)

So, yeah… when it comes down to “Fool? or Knave?” my reply is: He is most certainly foolish and totally ineducable; he was raised by a coven of Communists, and his mind will forevermore belong to The Hive. However, his actions PROVE him to be determined to destroy what remains of Rule-of-Law (and therefore social cohesion) in our country. Definitely Knave; and consciously and quite deliberately so.

  • The real question I keep coming back to is, how does it all benefit him personally?
If they managed to round up most of the guns, if there are millions practicing the theocracy of Islam, if the country is filled with Democrat voters from Central America.
    What’s in it for Barack?

Speaking of the theocracy of Islam, won’t it be fun when someone finally takes them to court to remind them they have freedom of religion, not freedom of alternative government, and that church and state are Constitutionally separate?
    Heh. 🙂

Perhaps by then Obama’s Constitoiletpaper will have been wiped with and flushed, so it won’t be an issue.

    • I think the same end-game is at play here as in Europe.

Remember, Marxism FAILS when there’s a fairly-content middle class. So, middle-class stability = no Glorious Revolution = no chance to profit from the social upheaval, and no way to get Your Inside Guys into positions of power.

So in Europe it’s the Muslims; here in the USA it’s SJW FemiNazis PLUS the No-Borders agitators PLUS La Raza Unida, PLUS BlackLivesMatter, PLUS Muslims and their “sensitivities”. Combine this with the economic crash that is inevitable when the first domino (or rather, Central Bank) falls and YES there will be world-wide social and economic chaos. When all the “restive ethnic underclasses” are out in the streets rioting and looting and burning things down, The Citizens (whether here in the USA or in the EU) will *DEMAND* their Government to “Do Something to Keep The Peace”.

In the EU, it means the leaders will have an excuse to create a military presence “for the duration of the emergency” (which those same leaders have created, deliberately and knowingly, by mass importation of Muslims) even though the EU Charter forbids the establishment of an armed military force. Here in the USA, pretty-much the same thing: “because of the emergency, the US military will be called upon to guarantee access to roadways, to protect vital infrastructure, and to advise-and-assist local police departments on tactics and operations
necessary to keep order”, or some such.

Then while The Mere Citizens are trying to just survive the interruptions in services, find stores with remaining food stocks, and find some means to pay their bills (because the banks will have ALL collapsed due to the global economic system being several-hundred-times over-leveraged), The Revolution can finally get under way. Just promise the terrified people A Strong Leader Who Will Fix Things. Of course that will require, umm, a “temporary” abrogation of all those silly Freedoms and Rights and stuff, but they’ll promise SOOO SINCERELY that once the riots are under control and Martial Law is lifted, everything will go back to normal. And people who are desperate to believe, WILL believe.

      • Then come the revolution he better have a really good palace guard, no country on earth has ever had average citizens who were so well armed and an all volunteer military with the troops and officer corp largely composed of “commoners”.

  • Honestly what do you expect? Here we have

    1. A Muslim
    2. An immigrant’s child
    3. A gay man
    4. A registered Democrat

If you don’t make it about guns, the NRA and how evil America is then shit, you’ve got a whole lot of leftist headless chickens running in circles trying to make sense of the narrative. The last day or so all I’ve seen in unveiled hating on America, the south in particular, since they can’t make sense of it. And, speaking as someone with a gay sibling, does it even matter if he was gay and (most of) the victims gay? Does it matter which particular 50 innocent people died? Apparently it does.

    • Same as always – victim status – it’s not enough to be an “American” and be a victim as probably most of those in the club were. No, it has to be special victims, because that helps the never ending narrative.
When the asshats set off the bomb on the street in Boston, they didn’t have an area cordoned off that said “gays only”, or “blacks only” or anything else only.
They were aiming to kill and maim Americans, as many as possible.

Just because President Princess Perfect would find it convenient if it were otherwise doesn’t make it so.
But he and his moronic head of inept agencies will do their best to make it so, while assuring us that THEY can handle this if we’ll just disarm ourselves and be more tolerant of whatever they want us to be tolerant of.
Really, if only we’d build more bridges to the muslim community and apologize harder for not believing what they believe and changing our ways to make them happy, this sort of thing would never happen!
I think we can see that battered women can take a lesson from Jeh Johnson.

  • Then again – just since I sometimes think things I shouldn’t think – and then sometimes say them out loud….

What if the same administration and people who tried so hard to bring you gun control via “Fast and Furious”,

have decided to take one more crack at it, and allow some cracks in the armor for operation
    “Furiously seeking Gun Control”.

Tell me why I shouldn’t think that’s possible at this point in this administration, considering the number of lies we’ve been told.

  • Ever notice how close “media” is to “Medea”, the evil witch of Greek mythology?

  • If you’re not already, you need to be used to the idea that anything that isn’t a clearly bolt action rifle or pump shotgun and possibly a musket because that’s what the founding fathers knew about, is in the minds of the gun grabbing tool class, an “assault rifle”.

That would include the good old M1 Garand, once they get around to it.

  • An Arabic speaker has pointed out that “allahu Akbar” does not translate as God is Great, but rather Allah is Greater. Mohammedan Allah is not the Judaeo-Christian God, but translates as “The One” the name of an old and presumably now defunct Arabic moon god. If I could write like Terry Pratchett, I’d have a book out parodying the life of Mohamed that would leave Islam the laughing stock of the whole world.
