Rhetoric vs. Reality: trying out the Obama record
It is something – the difference between rhetoric and reality - I don’t think Obama, for all the claims of his intelligence, understands. Just because you claim something is true doesn’t make it so (I know, something most of us learned around age 6).
In a speech in Boston – at a fund raiser:
Obama says that America should not be about the “haves and the have-nots.”
Didn’t know that it is, but this is a comfortable and popular theme among the limo liberal crowd, so it isn’t surprising the old horse was trotted out one more time. But let me set the scene for you:
President Obama addressed a group of 152 Democratic donors at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. The walls were lined with enormous original oil portraits from the 16th century and guests are seated around about 24 round tables.
Lots of “have nots” in that room weren’t there?
But that isn’t the major point here – just wanted you to understand the context of the next part. To add to the surreal atmosphere he said this:
In welcoming Nancy Pelosi, Obama called her “someone who’s going to go down as one of the greatest Speakers in our history: Nancy Pelosi.”
“When the rubble had cleared, when the dust had settled. This country was going through as touch a time economically, as tough a time financially, as any period since the 1930s,” Obama said..
His administration “had to make a series of quick decisions, and often times unpopular decisions,” Obama said.
In those times, Obama said, there would have been a temptation to “resort to the expedient.”
“That’s why when I say, Nancy is going to go down as one of our finest speakers… I mean what I say,” Obama continued.
“Not only were we able to yank this economy out of the recession,” Obama said.
“Not only were we able to get this economy going again, that in the last 15 months we’ve seen the economy add jobs…but under Nancy’s leadership we were able to achieve historic health care legislation that over the last 15, 20 years will end up benefiting millions of families across the country… we were able to get “don’t ask, don’t’ tell” repealed,” he continued, adding that Congress expand our investments in clean energy, made the largest investments in infrastructure and the largest investments in education in years.
“We didn’t just rescue the economy we put it on the strongest footing for the future,” Obama said.
“And along the way we saved the auto industry and a few other things,” he quipped, to some laughter from the crowd.
Obama went over a kept promise to end combat in Iraq, and reduce the country’s military commitment in Afghanistan.
Where to start?!
Suffice it to say, anyone who could tout Nancy Pelosi as the “greatest Speakers in our history” either has the ideological blinders on so tight they’re cutting off blood flow to the brain or has a rather tenuous grasp on reality. Nancy Pelosi, if anything positive could be said about her, was a compliant means to an end. Someone from the short bus should have been able to push through just about anything they wanted in Nancy Pelosi’s House, given the huge majority Democrats had.
And she was complicit in the biggest expansion of government, not to mention the largest expansion of the public debt, of any Speaker I know.
Great? For America, she was a disaster. And so is the person fawningly praising her.
As for his other claims, well that’s just what they are … claims. He’d like you to believe them because doing so helps his case, but what you see here is a sort of test run of how he plans on spinning his record – something he’s never had to run on before.
Each and every point is either highly debatable or can be refuted outright. I got a kick out of one of the commenters under this story addressing his Iraq claim about ending combat:
If you think Obama stopped combat here, you are stunningly gullible.
Our guys are out on patrol every day and night amid the IEDs and VBIEDs. Our specops forces are operating outside the wire every day and night. The mortars and rockets are hitting our FOBs on a very regular basis. Purple Hearts are still being issued, including two on my FOB in January when a 107mm rocket landed across the street in one of my buddy’s men’s huts.
You live in Fantasyland, but thanks for the laugh.
The last line pretty much sums up the 152 Democrats in the Boston Museum of Fine Arts last night and much of the left right now – sitting there listening to a litany of “accomplishments” that are straight out of Fantasyland.
Doubling the debt, multi-year trillion dollar deficits, expanded government, expanded spending, 9% unemployment and a jobs record that won’t even maintain the status quo. Clueless about foreign policy, no energy policy, Gitmo still open, still in Iraq and little to show but another huge entitlement we can’t afford.
That’s the record he’s compiled. And Nancy helped.
That is the record you need to remember.
~McQ

It is becoming apparent the Fleebaggers are sock-puppets for the Obama Chicago/DC Machine. The plan is to queer the last election via the recall process.
There is an an uncivil war being fought in America, and the law, democracy, and the Constitution hang in the balance.
Whoa…that has some REALLY ugly connotations…
“Just Words”
Um…excuse me. Did I read that news link correctly – did the freaking STATE OF MAINE get an Obamacare waiver?!?!??!?!
Yep. The Tidal Waiver continues…unabated.
But the whole deal is unconstitutional, and void.
What, did you want Erb to suffer? You mean old deep sea creature you.
Doesn’t that tell you what a great achievement Obamacare is? Not only are specific companies getting exemptions, but now, so are whole states. If you argued that specific types of workers (e.g. preexisting conditions) should get preferential treatment, I’d disagree, but I’d understand your point. When specific companies get exemptions, you’ve lost me. But when whole states… what kind of devil’s bargain have we made?
And national official from Maine who voted for ObamaDoesn’tCare should strongly consider Seppuku, tonight.
“Lots of “have nots” in that room weren’t there? ”
There are no have-nots in Boston! It is a worker’s paradise. These common man dignitaries were selected from amongst the populace to represent everyone in the state, and they don’t have gobs of money to donate to the President’s next election campaign, they are common, common I tell you!
That’s why the President met with them, because they are just plain Mike’s and Mary’s from Massachusetts and not well heeled, or connected, or wealthy. The President does that sort of thing ALL THE TIME. He does. Really!
STOP LAUGHING!
Obama plans to make us all “have nots” … equality of the “have nots”
I think hardly any political leader’s going to get support from all the citizens of the country. I’ms ure there were those who listened to this speech holding their breath! That’s what people are all about. That’s why it’s impossible to clear everything up and brush it up.
Yanked the economy out of recession? Does he mean the economy that seems to have recovered in spite his efforts? The economy that took over 2 years to start recovering?
Obama is like a rooster taking credit for the sun rising after he crows in the morning.
Economic recovery? What economic recovery?
Whenever I’m slumming around Beantown, I always seem to find myself at the MFA. /sac
Does anyone know if “Cadillac Patrick” Deval was there? It seems to me Øbama holds his Mini-Me at arms-length at all times.
“The fundraising dinner later in the day will be held in Boston’s newly remodeled Museum of Fine Arts. Tickets for the dinner start at $5,000 per person.”
Indeed, no have’s and have-nots here, it’s obviously ONLY the haves.
McQ – Just because you claim something is true doesn’t make it so (I know, something most of us learned around age 6).
Those of us who didn’t learn that became democrats.
It has struck me for some time that the dems generally and The Dear Golfer specifically make untrue – even fantastical – claims with breathtaking regularity. Take, for example, their on-going claims about “jobs created or saved”. I haven’t made up my mind whether they actually believe them (it’s very easy to give SanFran Nan a pass as I’m pretty sure that she’s batsh*t crazy) or if they think that the majority of the American people are so ill-informed, gullible, or downright stupid that they can claim anything and have it believed. Certainly they count on MiniTru covering for them; you won’t see Katie Couric or Wolf Blitzer “fact-checking” The Dear Golfer very much, nor see anybody in the White House press corps pressing Jay Carney very hard: “Does the president SERIOUSLY believe what he said in Boston??? Seriously???”
But possibly I’m being too hard on MiniTru. While we all accept that politicians lie from time to time, and that stretching the truth like a piece of taffy comes as naturally to them as breathing, I don’t think that it’s easy to accept that the President of the United States – heir to the office held by Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, the Roosevelts, Ike, and Reagan – is a fluent and serial liar.
Compulsive lying is often sign as a sign of a deeper problem. It could be a more serious emotional and psychological problems. Some politicians do it regularly. And it media either covers or accepts there lie without question. It’s like the friend who goes and buys 5 Big Mac meals for the friend who is so fat that they cannot move. What good are you doing? Also, compulsive liars often times don’t realize that other people regularly and easily see through their lies. It just doesn’t occur to them that people may not believe them. What a mess we have…
Wait, he said this and the room didn’t erupt into raucous laughter? Did they hand out valium at the door? They the biggest load of BS iv ever read.
“We didn’t just rescue the economy we put it on the strongest footing for the future,”….are you kidding me? I…I.. just don’t have words.
The donors probably all work for banks, so it works for them.
Either that or they are trust-fund babies who don’t have to worry about earning a single penny of money and hence have no idea how the real world works.
The closest this bunch of country clubbers ever gets to a “have not”is when they are dressing down the wait staff for running out of those little red Hors d’œuvres.
I read this and all the while the words of Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) went thru my head …
Heh, heh…THAT is one of my FAVS…
Right up there with…
“I did not have sex with that woman…” But you GOT to have the finger-wagging goin’ on… THAT’s what makes the deal…
My bedpost is smarter than that .. that emo
OT-
Game over in WI. Senate GOP bypasses the fleebaggers and strips the public unions of collective bargaining rights.
Choke on it fleebaggers.
I think the Administration does have something of an energy plan. It’s more of a plan to cut off energy than make sure we have it, but it is an energy plan.
In other news, it looks like WI is gonna bypass the fleebaggers.
I’ve concluded that there will be no peace in the Middle East until they suck every last drop of oil out.
Obama is trying to shutdown US production of everything in order to speed up that sucking sound you here.
The Middle East has a problem: most of their economies rely very heavily upon oil (not consumption, production). If and when that production ever is interrupted or cut off, they are going to have severe problems that make what’s going on now look like child’s play. For example, Egypt used $2.74 billion in 2007 to subsidize bread in order to feed its people. What happens when the government doesn’t have that money anymore from oil? Mass hunger will cause many of the Middle Eastern states to revert to something like Somalia in 1993.
Pelosi was indeed a pioneer. She was the first openly insane Speaker of the House.
A bunch of Cheese-eating surrender monkeys acted before the President of the United States.
More of that “Smart Diplomacy” from Pres**ent Obama.
And if Khadaffi wins?
