Obama job approval poll numbers — the downward trend continues

The polls haven’t been kind to any politicians recently.  Congress has netted its worst approval rating ever.  And Barack Obama hasn’t been an exception as the latest Gallup poll on his job approval ratings show.  If he hasn’t figure out “it is the economy, stupid” someone better wake him up. The fact is there is a discernable trend, and that trend for him is down.  To the the numbers:

A new low of 26% of Americans approve of President Barack Obama’s handling of the economy, down 11 percentage points since Gallup last measured it in mid-May and well below his previous low of 35% in November 2010.

Obama earns similarly low approval for his handling of the federal budget deficit (24%) and creating jobs (29%).

Gallup goes on to point out, in relative terms, the President’s foreign policy ratings are fine.

The president fares relatively better on foreign policy matters, with 53% of Americans approving of his handling of terrorism and roughly 4 in 10 approving on foreign affairs and the situation in Afghanistan. Also, 41% approve of Obama on education.

However, the primary issue of the day sees his numbers in the dumps.  And, most importantly, the constituency he most needs, independents, are none to happy with his performance, or lack thereof.

Nothing particularly surprising about the numbers from those identifying with the two major parties.  But that middle column spells big trouble for the incumbent if the primary issues in November of 2012 remains jobs, the economy and the deficit.  And at this point, there’s little to point to which says they won’t still be the top concerns for voters.

  • Another train wreck of economic reports are not going to help.  NFP +400k again.  Philly Fed prints as -30.7.  Europe is jumping the shark.  I used to tell a joke, “Did you hear France and Germany are going to combine into one country?  They’re gonna call it Germany.”  It looks like it might actually happen on the economic front.  What is going on in the EU is surreal.  Of course it could be coming to a country near you.

    • Sorry, that should be new jobless claims that went over 400k.  NFP won’t be out for a few weeks.

  • Oh, I almost forgot, this is the perfect time to take a vacation.  Ya know, if you can.  Let them eat cake.

    • Obama is most definitely starting to act like J. Wellington Wimpy, generally referred to as Wimpy, the personal friend of Popeye.
“I’ll give you a ‘jobs plan’ tomorrow, if you love me today”
      He even like hamburers, too.

  • I would love to know exactly what President Pathetic is doing on the economy to earn him approval from ANYBODY.  Were those 53% of democrats dropped on their heads as infants?  Do they smoke a LOT of crack?  I realize that they rationalize a lot of it away as “the Tea Party’s fault”, but, really, what has President Pathetic done to earn any approval at all?

    • If you’re benefiting from the stimulus programs of unemployment checks and/or food stamps then you might approve of Obama’s economic record.

      • If your idea of “work” has no connection to creating value, but merely collecting a paycheck for showing up, that’s probably their basis for evaluation.

        Yeah, you’re right.

        DEADBEATS FOR OBAMA!

“Gross Incompetence” or “Cloward-Pivin”? I vote for the latter.

  • Well Obama apparently inherited a war and an economy from W, it is only fair he inherit the approval ratings as well.

    • One of my favorite cartoons from the campaign of 2000 had Al Gore as the Tin Man singing “If I only had a heart”, G W Bush as the Scarecrow singing “If I only had a brain”, and Dorothy in the middle lamenting “If I only had another choice.”

Modern American politicians just suck, pure and simple. They are products of a deranged media-academic-political complex (to steal an idea from Eisenhower) that is specifically constructed to deny reality in order to further the ends of that complex. I’m glad that some of the leg-tingling crowd is figuring out that Obama isn’t better than the average in that group, he’s worse.
