Polar bears refuse to cooperate in doomsday predictions for their species

One of the most appealing, albeit disingenuous pictures that the climate alarmists used to push their agenda was that of a polar bear on a small bit of melting ice.  With that they claimed that global warming was melting the bear’s habitat and that they were close to extinction.

Wrong:

The debate about climate change and its impact on polar bears has intensified with the release of a survey that shows the bear population in a key part of northern Canada is far larger than many scientists thought, and might be growing.

The number of bears along the western shore of Hudson Bay, believed to be among the most threatened bear subpopulations, stands at 1,013 and could be even higher, according to the results of an aerial survey released Wednesday by the Government of Nunavut. That’s 66 per cent higher than estimates by other researchers who forecasted the numbers would fall to as low as 610 because of warming temperatures that melt ice faster and ruin bears’ ability to hunt. The Hudson Bay region, which straddles Nunavut and Manitoba, is critical because it’s considered a bellwether for how polar bears are doing elsewhere in the Arctic.

So in the most critical of polar bear habitats, the polar bear population is 66% higher than what the alarmists said it would be with the increase in temperatures.

But we’re supposed to give their doomsday prophecies credibility?

Of course other researchers disagree.  Interestingly the Inuit communities disagree with the alarmist researchers.

By the way,  as an aside, we never see pictures like this when the alarmists want to make us empathize with those cuddly little white bears do we?

Actually, there are only about 200 bears, the Koch brothers hired pilots to move the bears from place to place in front of the Nunavutian aerial survey. They also used inflatable motorized Christmas bears to disguise the decline. The entire idea was Dick Cheney’s based on a paper written by Karl Rove.

And those bears in the lower picture are actually victims of a drive by helicopter assault. What you see there is Daddy, Big Brother and Baby bear, mourning Mama bear who was scattered all over the ice by Dick Cheney.

Do you suppose I should have turned the SARCASM tag on for this?

  • Ragspierre says:

I was floored to learn that this whole BS meme was started by a SINGLE aerial observation of 3-4 dead bears AFTER a major Arctic storm, ASSSSSSumed to have drowned. Science? Please…!!!!

    • looker says:

@Ragspierre Four drowned bears, 1 tree for the tree rings….all very truthy and sciency.

      • DocD says:

@looker You can’t make cherry pie without picking cherries.

        • looker says:

@DocD In this case, they made it from acorns, and manipulated them around and colored them, and flavored them, until they got the cherries they were after.

        • DocD says:

@looker Not even that much work! See D’Arrigo and his testimony to the NAS panel.

  • mike other says:

I should be jaded by now, but the fact that inane comments by cubicle residing modelers and activists are treated as gospel vs what the local population states still astounds me. So many “researchers” base their projections of polar bear decline on the recent decrease of sea ice, and lament that without sea ice, the bears are doomed. Yet the Hudson Bay loses all sea ice by late summer, always has, always will, and the local bear population survives and indeed thrives. It’s likely even the high Arctic summer ice decreased to minimal cover during the early Holocene, yet the bears in the Canadian Archipelago did not notice their dangerous circumstances.

    • looker says:

@mike other When was the last time you saw Polar Bears in Central Park? Eh? Eh? See!!!!!!!!! They’re in decline!!!!!!!!

      • mike other says:

@looker Actually Ida was sighted at the Central Park zoo in 2010 (does that count??), but euthanized last year. Liver disease…likely brought on by drinking too much while worrying about her future.

    • Neo_ says:

@mike other I kind of think that the polar bears just might be in on a conspiracy

      • looker says:

@Neo_ Ah! you’ve hit on it. The bears, cuing from the sand people on tattooine, always walk single file and under cover of night to hide their numbers!

  • The Shark says:

The 2nd pic is actually cuter

  • Neo_ says:

I guess that second picture shows what happens when a “tree hugger” comes to town.

Meanwhile, I’m sure the the WWF (and I don’t mean the wassling folks) will still lie in their propaganda.

  • Harun says:

    Both photos look shopped.

    1) Mr. Showoff Bear really stays on an ice flow while its slowly shrinks to one little bit above water?

    2) Two bears covered in blood and the other bear is completely clean? Fussy McFussybear doesn’t want to get nasty seal blood all over his fur.

    • looker says:

@Harun He has it – note the (viewers) right side of his muzzle, and left paw. I would say sloppy bear decided for a good old fashioned dog roll in the kill, and the shadows on sloppy bear cast by prissy bear appear consistent with the other shadows in the scene. I don’t see any particular reason to think they ALL roll in it like sloppy bear, any more so than all dogs rolling on dead smelly things (you may guess, I’m a long time dog owner, several breeds) but I don’t see how they can escape some blood, so it’s not unreasonable to think that’s a real photo.

    • TheOldMan says:

@Harun Fussy missed the main course and just arrived for dessert?

  • tadcf says:

I don’t know if you know this, but predictions are often wrong. Many world-wide effort since 1989 have been initiated to protect polar bears—many having nothing to do with climate-change; these actions may have something to do with impacting polar bear populations. http://www.worldwildlife.org/species/finder/polarbear/polarbear.html
It is incorrect to think nothing has been done, and polar bears have survived by themselves, with no one doing anything to help them survive—which is a little like saying the God did it.

    • Ragspierre says:

@tadcf We REALLY need a “Pusillanimous prick” button to go with the “like” button.

    • DocD says:

@tadcf which is a little like saying… what the fuck are you on about?

    • looker says:

@tadcf Yes, the Polar Bears need us to survive!!! How they managed it that time Ghengis Khan cut the funding to a minimum is beyond me and when Napoleon completely did away with the “Helping Polar Bears” department well, it’s a miracle they’re even here isn’t it!!!!

    • McQandO says:

@tadcf LOL … of course I know they are often wrong … that’s the point. But when governments start talking about taking my money through such scams as “cap and trade” based on these “wrong” or at least unproven predictions, then they go to far. And that’s precisely what was in the works.

By the way, what has been done to help them survive that has to do with or is based upon the global warming scam?

    • mike other says:

@tadcf Well…yes. Efforts such as restricting permits for the annual bear harvest by hunters certainly had an effect on increasing the bear population. However that does not address the issue of how these delicate creatures manage to survive multi-months of an ice free Hudson Bay…an environment we are assured by the environmental hucksters is detrimental to their very survival. Unless, of course, the local population is hand feeding them till the ice returns.

By the way, the annual quota-based harvest was/is very lucrative for the local population, with hunting trips costing upwards of $30,000. The permit decrease certainly has an impact on the local economy, poor as it is. Another case where our betters’ pronouncements impact those who can least afford it.
