Free Markets, Free People

But remember, government knows best …

And if you need an example of why you should always rely on government to get it right, well, just consider the latest concerning the mandated use of food ethanol for fuel:

The AAA says the Environmental Protection Agency and gasoline retailers should halt the sale of E15, a new ethanol blend that could damage millions of vehicles and void car warranties.

AAA, which issued its warning today, says just 12 million of more than 240 million cars, trucks and SUVs now in use have manufacturers’ approval for E15. Flex-fuel vehicles, 2012 and newer General Motors vehicles, 2013 Fords and 2001 and later model Porsches are the exceptions, according to AAA, the nation’s largest motorist group, with 53.5 million members.

“It is clear that millions of Americans are unfamiliar with E15, which means there is a strong possibility that many may improperly fill up using this gasoline and damage their vehicle,” AAA President and CEO Robert Darbelnet tells USA TODAY. “Bringing E15 to the market without adequate safeguards does not responsibly meet the needs of consumers.”

Ya think?

Hey look buddy,  the ideological agenda waits on no one and if you’re among those driving the 228 million “other” vehicles, tough nuts.

The government has said 15%.  Nuff said.

BMW, Chrysler, Nissan, Toyota and VW said their warranties will not cover fuel-related claims caused by E15. Ford, Honda, Kia, Mercedes-Benz and Volvo said E15 use will void warranties, says Darbelnet, citing potential corrosive damage to fuel lines, gaskets and other engine components.

Gee, I wonder if anyone will question the “fairness” of this.

Anyone doubt who will pick up the tab for this, Mr. and Mrs. Consumer?

  • Consumers…???  MOST of them live in Red states…Fly-over Country.  And they shop at WalMart.  Screw them!
People…???  The Collective does NOT like people.

  • Well, the auto manufactureres will be FORCED to cover fuel related damage.
Of course, unionized manufactureres will get waivers….

  • ” 2012 and newer General Motors vehicles,”
Boy do you right wing clowns not understand….

EVERYONE NEEDS TO BUY A NEW Gubmint Motors CAR!
Just like the new TV set mandate they sent out a few years ago when they auctioned off the analog bandwidths.  We’ll have special programs for the ‘poor’ just like we did with TV sets, but you rich people can suck it up.

You’re gonna get that new car either by choice, or when your old engine seizes up from the accumulated damage, all the same to Johnny Government.
If you weren’t so determined to thwart Obama, you’d see the wisdom here.  This is a boon to the economy and the environment!  Training techs, vehicle sales, tax revenues, increase in GM stock value, getting those old polluters off the road once and for all, better mileage…..

Glorious!   Hail the wisdom of the collective!

    • Ya beat me to it.  I was going to post how requiring everyone to purchase an E15 complaint car would create jobs.

    • My brother bought one of these E15 vehicles.  He tried to figure out the economics of it all.
You see, when you run with E15, the fuel miles per gallon goes down.
Anyway, after looking at the difference in cost, and the actual mpg of his vehicle using E15 fuels, he determined that E15 cost him more to operate on a per mile basis … and went back to the standard (lower ethanol) gasoline.

    • As I reflect on this, it might be quicker if, during the next hurricane, the government mandates that what ever states are being hit, all residents drive their per 2012 cars to low lying coastal areas to act as ‘break waters’ to alleviate damage to property.

      • Not such a good idea.  Cars are light, so they would become “break everything down-winders”.  Ballistic junk.

    • Its GM and Ford that are both compliant.  The other makers don’t don’t want participate because they don’t want to splinter their vehicle components even more between countries and Chrysler is just cheap.

And actually GM has warned against E15 in older cars, Ford not so much

A spokesman for Ford Motor Co. replied to EPM’s inquiry, saying, “We have approved E15 for use in all 2013 Ford vehicles including hybrids and Ecoboost.” Richard Truett added, “We are not retesting any older vehicles to see if they are compatible with E15 and we’re not commenting on the performance of E15.”
Basel referred to earlier testing done on E15 as part of an industry group in her comments: “GM as part of an industry group has performed a multitude of tests on 2001 and newer vehicles that are included in the EPA regulations for E15 and have found that damage to the vehicle’s engines resulted. For model-year 2011 or earlier vehicles, we strongly recommend that GM customers refer to their owners manuals for the proper fuel designation for their vehicles.  In fact, we recommend this across the board.”

Although leaving GM out of the list of manufacturers warning about E15 in older vehicles technically isn’t a lie, it implies something that people want to hear for attention getting I suppose.

  • Shoot with the current ethanol regime, I can’t get a leafblower to work more than 6 times without dying.
I really shutter at the idea of the same paradigm with automobiles.

    • You don’t need a car.  Take the union backed public transportation.

      • Thasss the plan, Stan.  Herd us into mass transit, past DHS friskers.

        • Trust me.  There are highly trained people in government who know far better than you do on how to get you where you need to go.*

*never mind that they don’t know who you are, where you are, or where you need to go.

        • Then we’re at the mercy of the mass transit unions. Everything is falling into place!

      • Here I live not only do you need a car, but it has to be a four wheel drive vehicle (to deal with that frozen global warming stuff).

  • I have a single cylinder motorcycle (BMW F650 GS) which is specifically mapped for 87 octane gasoline. I can hear the difference when I run E10. I dread what might be happening internally. I can’t/won’t risk putting E15 in it. God damn statists.

  • Here’s an idea: we develop an additive from wheat, let’s say, that counteracts the damage from ethanol (both to our engines and food supply). Sweet!

  • A side note:
On the one hand, 100LL (Low Lead) in piston aircraft is on shaky ground, potentially grounding about half of the piston poppers in the air,  but FAA has been twarting efforts to produce a lead substitute.
(Note: smaller aircraft like Piper and Cessna with < 200HP will work on car gas, but anything over 200HP, especailly turbocharged engines, have issues with unleaded gas. An electronic ignition that can adjust so as to allow pistons to run on unleaded gas has also been blocked by the FAA).

    • Good grief!  You are NOT approved to DRIVE in New America.  How can you have the temerity to IMAGINE you will be allowed to FLY…????  Go and get your bicycle…and be sure to put on that helmet and reflective jumpsuit.

  • The E15 engine exhibited reduced hardness on piston surfaces based on post-test teardown analysis.
o The exhaust gas temperature increased 17°C at wide open throttle as a result of the leaner operation when using E15 fuel. Higher combustion temperatures may have caused observed piston hardness reductions. Lack of pre-test hardness measurements prevented a conclusive assessment.

  • On a completely related topic…
WHY in the wide, wide world of sports are we STILL spending MULTIPLES of what Rational Fuels cost for a GREEN FLUCKING NAVY…???

    • It’s psychological warfare.
Show them that we will spend any amount necessary to keep the navy going … plus there is probably an Obama donator on the other end.

    • Aint just the navy.  We have those damn motion detector lights in our office so if i’m actually sitting there working for more than 20 minutes the lights turn out forcing me to stop what i’m doing get up and wave my hands until the sensor is tripped.  Electric bill down, productivity down.

      • Don’t worry, after your company lays you off or reduces your hours to 28 a week to avoid Obamacare you will be home before dark.
