Should we ban “assault” hammers?

Because they kill more than all rifles each year, including “assault rifles”.

In 2005, the number of murders committed with a rifle was 445, while the number of murders committed with hammers and clubs was 605. In 2006, the number of murders committed with a rifle was 438, while the number of murders committed with hammers and clubs was 618.

And so the list goes, with the actual numbers changing somewhat from year to year, yet the fact that more people are killed with blunt objects each year remains constant.

For example, in 2011, there was 323 murders committed with a rifle but 496 murders committed with hammers and clubs.

Where is DiFi when you need her.   License hardware stores. Register hammers. And get those nasty looking “assault hammers” off the market.

And by the way, there is no right to a hammer, is there?  No Second Amendment for hammers or clubs. Where are the Democrats on this?

By the way, I assume you can do the math concerning the minute number of deaths in the US by rifle and figure out that for the most part it would be considered statistical noise if we were talking about anything else.

But what about the children!!!! Oh wait – they have access to hammers and bats and crow bars and sticks…

  • jpm100 says:
  • The shark says:

No precious precious white kids were killed, so no need for any sort of action

    • looker says:

Well, not by hammers, but plenty vanished as a result of ‘choice’.  Oh, that’s not at all politically correct is it.

  • Neo says:

I believe that a hammer is an “arm”

Please, don’t forget New York subway platforms.

  • Chris in N.Va. says:

Let’s also note that more people were killed with fists and bare hands than with rifles.
So, we obviously do not have a right to bare arms or bare hands (or, for martial arts experts, bare feet).
Just ban the human body, especially the brain—-WAIT!!! The Libs/Dems have already done that.
    Never mind…

In South Africa, which has a substantially higher level of murder per capita, and substantially tighter gun laws, hands and feet ARE the number 1 murder weapons.

Must be the food or something.  They should pass a law, that will fix it, always does.

      • Neo says:

During the “pre-Surge” period, I heard that it was safer in downtown Baghdad than in South Africa

I prefer a heavy framing hammer for all my murder and mayhem.  Straight claws, you see…  That, and the nicely checkered face for maximum energy transfer without that bad, bad slipping you can get with a finish hammer…

    • timactual says:

Don’t those claws get stuck in the hammeree and leave unsightly gouges? I prefer the classic ball peen hammer myself. It leaves nice smooth, symmetrical dents. Much more esthetically pleasing.

      • timactual says:

        Easier to clean, too.

        • Ragspierre says:

          Clean…?!?!?
No, no.  The $30 hammer stays where it is used…

          • looker says:

Military hammer no doubt…bludgeon and forget

          • timactual says:

“The $30 hammer stays where it is used”

Unlike you wingnut scum, we environmentally sensitive types recycle and reuse. Especially when our non-polluting, non-fossil fuel using, gov’t. subsidized hammers cost considerably more than $30.

          • Ragspierre says:

            looker…
            Yes.  Single use weapon.
            tim…
Recycling is for the forensic crew to take care of…

          • Neo says:

            Is this a semi-automatic hammer  ?
            … or a full-automatic hammer ?

          • looker says:

A Semi-auto hammer, would be one  you have to lift up manually between hits to the nail or other surface, right?

  • Neo says:

“Americans have the right and advantage of being armed – unlike the citizens of other countries whose governments are afraid to trust the people with arms.” (James Madison, The Federalist Papers #46 at 243-244)

“…to disarm the people – that was the best and most effectual way to enslave them.” (George Mason, 3 Elliot, Debates at 380)

“Congress have no power to disarm the militia. Their swords, and every other terrible implement of the soldier, are the birthright of an American… The unlimited power of the sword is not in the hands of either the federal or state government, but, where I trust in God it will ever remain, in the hands of the people” (Tench Coxe, Pennsylvania Gazette, Feb. 20, 1788)

    • Gunwise says:

Neo, you can bet the farm that mine will remain in my hands.  Nuff said.

    • timactual says:

“…every other terrible implement of the soldier”

Clearly, entrenching tools are military weapons, also. Not just hammers, but shovels and picks, etc. Shovels are sharp, and picks are pointy. Both are heavy.  Both can inflict terrible damage, especially to Gaia, our Mother Earth.

  • newshutz says:

    Don’t give them ideas.

  • Gunwise says:

I read somewhere recently (here in these pages, if I am not mistaken), that the number one murder weapon in America is the baseball bat. Maybe I should check with my local police chief to see if he would entertain a CCW permit for my bat bag….

    • Don says:

I do recall seeing union thugs with signs stapled to baseball bats. “officier, it isn’t a weapon, it’s a sign”

  • timactual says:

I think common-sense hammer regulation is a no brainer.

    • Ragspierre says:

Da Rev. Al has already called for knife regulation…

    • Gunwise says:

Yes, congress is capable of shafting… um… er…. crafting a law that will preserve the traditions of American carpentry and not affect woodworking hobbyists while still protecting the people from these dangerous weapons. I agree, common sense reform is necessary. We can start with a ban on any tool belt or pouch with more than one hammer loop. Such high capacity tool belts only make it easier for a deranged person to inflict harm on a greater number of innocent victims.
Along with this, I think all nails should have some type of unique identifier so that they can be traced back to the original buyer….
I am also oging to ask my city council to vote for funding and to sponsor a hammer buy back program to get these terrible weapons off our streets. No matter the condition, no questions asked.

      • Ragspierre says:

        Nobody NEEDS a 30oz. framing hammer.  A 10oz. hammer limit is a reasonable compromise…

        • looker says:

And what would ANYONE do with a 12 lb maul or a 12 lb sledge?  The average homeowner has no practical use for this sort of thing.  These sorts of hammers were NEVER envisioned by the founders as being owned privately.  Clearly they would only be owned by police forces, fire departments or the military.

  • Gunwise says:

“If hammers are outlawed, only outlaws will have hammers!”  I could go on, but this is just too easy…

  • Don says:

The main reaason the left wants to ban guns is control. Not so much to prevent armed rebellion or such (IMO), but because unarmed people are dependent.

So such stats mean nothing to them. They don’t care that young thugs murder with hammers, what they don’t want is the independent 30 year old woman or 65 year old couple who can defend themselves and doesn’t depend upon the government.

    • looker says:

Dependence is the life blood of bureaucracy.  You start getting the idea you don’t need them, you start getting the idea you shouldn’t have to pay for them either.

      And as Governor Lapetomaine observed
We have to protect our phoney baloney jobs here, gentlemen! We must do something about this immediately! Immediately! Immediately! Harrumph! Harrumph!”

  • Ragspierre says:
  • Achillea says:

Hammers?  Guns?  Pah!  You bloodthirsty inbred rightwing teabaggers are just trying to divert attention from the true weapon of mass destruction — dihydrogen monoxide! This horrifically lethal chemical claims thousands of lives every year, most of them children, and yet to our nation’s unending shame it remains legal, unregulated, and freely available!  It can be purchased practically everywhere nationwide, without any background check or waiting period whatsoever! Vast quantities are already in private hands!
    SOMETHING MUST BE DONE!!!

    • looker says:

kills @3500 people annually, and 80% of those killed are male.  Stuff needs to be completely done away with, no one NEEDS more than a couple gallons, yet they claim they’re entitled to have vats of it with thousands of gallons of capacity!

    • looker says:

Ya know Achillea, the EPA DID try to claim this stuff was a pollutant in Virginia – in all seriousness.

  • phlinn says:

The statistics you listed are misleading.  Clicking through to the original link, about 2/3 of all murders were committed with some time of firearm.  Rifles were simply the least common form of firearm.   Most of the gun grabbers don’t actually care about the type of gun.  It does highlight the one part of stupidity of focusing on “assault rifles” in order to scare the public I suppose.

    • So, why would we care about the others if the discussion is about “assault”
      RIFLES?

    • looker says:

“Because they kill more than all rifles each year, including “assault rifles”.

Assault RIFLES, a subset of RIFLES, versus hammers.

If you were mislead after the first line, with due respect, it was a choice you made to be mislead.   Sorta like people who voted for our destructive leader, AGAIN.
