Should we ban “assault” hammers?
Because they kill more than all rifles each year, including “assault rifles”.
In 2005, the number of murders committed with a rifle was 445, while the number of murders committed with hammers and clubs was 605. In 2006, the number of murders committed with a rifle was 438, while the number of murders committed with hammers and clubs was 618.
And so the list goes, with the actual numbers changing somewhat from year to year, yet the fact that more people are killed with blunt objects each year remains constant.
For example, in 2011, there was 323 murders committed with a rifle but 496 murders committed with hammers and clubs.
Where is DiFi when you need her. License hardware stores. Register hammers. And get those nasty looking “assault hammers” off the market.
And by the way, there is no right to a hammer, is there? No Second Amendment for hammers or clubs. Where are the Democrats on this?
By the way, I assume you can do the math concerning the minute number of deaths in the US by rifle and figure out that for the most part it would be considered statistical noise if we were talking about anything else.

In South Africa, which has a substantially higher level of murder per capita, and substantially tighter gun laws, hands and feet ARE the number 1 murder weapons.
Must be the food or something. They should pass a law, that will fix it, always does.

I prefer a heavy framing hammer for all my murder and mayhem. Straight claws, you see… That, and the nicely checkered face for maximum energy transfer without that bad, bad slipping you can get with a finish hammer…
Don’t those claws get stuck in the hammeree and leave unsightly gouges? I prefer the classic ball peen hammer myself. It leaves nice smooth, symmetrical dents. Much more esthetically pleasing.

Clearly, entrenching tools are military weapons, also. Not just hammers, but shovels and picks, etc. Shovels are sharp, and picks are pointy. Both are heavy. Both can inflict terrible damage, especially to Gaia, our Mother Earth.

I read somewhere recently (here in these pages, if I am not mistaken), that the number one murder weapon in America is the baseball bat. Maybe I should check with my local police chief to see if he would entertain a CCW permit for my bat bag….

Yes, congress is capable of shafting… um… er…. crafting a law that will preserve the traditions of American carpentry and not affect woodworking hobbyists while still protecting the people from these dangerous weapons. I agree, common sense reform is necessary. We can start with a ban on any tool belt or pouch with more than one hammer loop. Such high capacity tool belts only make it easier for a deranged person to inflict harm on a greater number of innocent victims.
Along with this, I think all nails should have some type of unique identifier so that they can be traced back to the original buyer….
I am also oging to ask my city council to vote for funding and to sponsor a hammer buy back program to get these terrible weapons off our streets. No matter the condition, no questions asked.
Nobody NEEDS a 30oz. framing hammer. A 10oz. hammer limit is a reasonable compromise…
And what would ANYONE do with a 12 lb maul or a 12 lb sledge? The average homeowner has no practical use for this sort of thing. These sorts of hammers were NEVER envisioned by the founders as being owned privately. Clearly they would only be owned by police forces, fire departments or the military.

The main reaason the left wants to ban guns is control. Not so much to prevent armed rebellion or such (IMO), but because unarmed people are dependent.
So such stats mean nothing to them. They don’t care that young thugs murder with hammers, what they don’t want is the independent 30 year old woman or 65 year old couple who can defend themselves and doesn’t depend upon the government.
Dependence is the life blood of bureaucracy. You start getting the idea you don’t need them, you start getting the idea you shouldn’t have to pay for them either.
And as Governor Lapetomaine observed

The statistics you listed are misleading. Clicking through to the original link, about 2/3 of all murders were committed with some time of firearm. Rifles were simply the least common form of firearm. Most of the gun grabbers don’t actually care about the type of gun. It does highlight the one part of stupidity of focusing on “assault rifles” in order to scare the public I suppose.
So, why would we care about the others if the discussion is about “assault”
