IRS Commissioner knew about illegal targeting of conservative groups a year ago

And, as it always seems to happen now days, nothing was done:

In late March 2012, IRS deputy commissioner Steven Miller–who resigned his post as acting commissioner last week at President Obama’s request–directed senior technical advisor Nancy J. Marks to investigate allegations of political targeting of groups seeking tax exempt status, agency officials told congressional aides. Holly Paz, acting director of ruling and agreements, worked with Marks on the probe, and both traveled to Cincinnati to conduct interviews.

Sounds serious, right?  Eh, not so much:

On May 3, 2012. Marks gave what IRS officials described as a “presentation” to Miller describing her findings. According to the House aide, Marks said the investigation had found significant problems in the review process and a substantial bias against conservative group. No written findings were produced as a result, the aide said, and it does not appear the internal review led to any disciplinary actions against IRS employees.

Now, I don’t know about you, but if, in fact, “a substantial bias against conservative groups” was found, and it was important enough, at least initially to send Paz and Marks to check it out, then by doing nothing, it would seem to me that IRS management at least tacitly endorsed the action.

Which may be why certain IRS official has decided has decided to plead the Fifth:

A top IRS official in the division that reviews nonprofit groups will invoke the Fifth Amendment and refuse to answer questions before a House committee investigating the agency’s improper screening of conservative nonprofit groups.

Lois Lerner, the head of the exempt organizations division of the IRS, won’t answer questions about what she knew about the improper screening – or why she didn’t reveal it to Congress, according to a letter from her defense lawyer, William W. Taylor 3rd.

And yes, you’re right … this stinks to high heaven and it absolutely begs to be prosecuted.

Of course, if you had any faith in government, you’d expect it too.

That exempts me, however. I expect a few low level IRS employees to get to take one “for the team” and those that actually made it happen will, as usual, escape scott free.

That’s how it works today in this land where everyone is “equal” under the law.

  • The 5th?  No prob — that’s what immunity is for:  sing, Lois.

  • Obama said he didn’t know anything about it until he saw it in the news like the
    rest of us.

    Really?

President Barack Obama said last week he learned
about the controversy at the same time as the public, on May 10, when an IRS
official revealed it to a conference of lawyers and then hit the media.

    Really????

Not so fast – The Wall Street Journal reports: “In the week of April 22,
the Office of the White House Counsel and its head, Kathryn Ruemmler, were told
by Treasury Department attorneys that an inspector general’s report was nearing
completion, the White House official said. In that conversation, Ms. Ruemmler
learned that “a small number of line IRS employees had improperly scrutinized
certain…organizations by using words like ‘tea party’ and ‘patriot,’ ” the
    official said.

And we are supposed to believe this lawyer did not inform Obama about what
would be a damaging report concerning an agency
in his administration, if only to give him a “head’s up”?

    Really????

And now we are informed according to the White House Visitors Log,
(provided here in searchable form) by U.S. News and World
    Report,
the president of the anti-Tea Party National Treasury Employees
Union, Colleen Kelley, visited the White House at 12:30 pm on March 31,
    2010.
The White House lists the IRS union leader’s visit this way: Kelley,
    Colleen Potus 03/31/2010 12:30 (
“POTUS” stands for “President of the
    United States.”)
The very next day after her White House meeting with the President, according
to the Treasury Department’s Inspector General’s Report (the same report
mentioned above), IRS employees — the same employees who belong to the NTEU —
set to work in earnest targeting the Tea Party and conservative groups around
America.  The IG report wrote it up this way: “April 1-2, 2010: The new Acting
Manager, Technical Unit, suggested the need for a Sensitive Case Report on the
Tea Party cases. The Determinations Unit Program Manager Agreed.”
In short: the very day after the president of the anti-Tea Party labor union
    — the union for IRS employees — met with President Obama, the manager of the IRS
“Determinations Unit Program agreed” to open a “Sensitive Case report on the Tea
party cases.” As stated by the IG report.
And now the white House has changed its story about when they knew of the IRS IG Investigation and IRS Official Lois Lerner is pleading the 5th rather than answer question from Congress.
    Really????

  • Both parties are going to have to go after this.  It is radio active.
EVERY ordinary citizen has had the hoo-doo put on them by the IRS, and there is no serious question about wrong-doing here.
There really isn’t a serious question about who was leading this.  Nobody with a brain thinks Obama did not approve.

  • I have long been expecting the point where the average low information voter gets what Obama is all about. So far, I’ve been dissapointed.

This is why things like Fast and Furious slip by: people don’t believe he would do that. It all seems too bizarre. Too over the top.

This is why I’ve never cared for the Birther stuff. It makes us looks like kooks. It really doesn’t matter if it is true; once he’s POTUS by popular will, that’s it, and what is or isn’t written on a birth certificate doesn’t matter anymore.

And I actually think Obama WANTED the Birther claim to be out there. That’s why Michele, while in Kenya, made a statement about “her husband’s country”; they knew the Birthers would pick up on it and run with it, and further discredit themselves in the process.

    • It’s like hearing people say the “I” word on a regular basis for the last week.    Like wearing tin foil hats.

  • Lerner tested out “I vas only following orders” but decided maybe the Nuremburg defense wasn’t going to fly.

Well, that and she didn’t want Chicago inspired gentlemen to stop by her house later and introduce her to Mr. Molotov’s beverage of choice.
