IRS investigation still lags–I’m guessing they can’t find anyone who wants the job

Via Instapundit, I see that an attorney representing Tea Party groups says:

"I have no reason to believe there is an investigation. It appears to me the Obama administration is only talking to itself," Mitchell stated in an e-mail.

The FBI announced the supposed investigation over six weeks ago. Three weeks later, FBI Director Robert Mueller said he didn’t know who the lead investigator is or how many agents are assigned.

Unlike most of the misdirection and obfuscation in the IRS scandal, I think he was telling the truth, and I think the reason is simple: at that point, and maybe even up to now, there may not be a lead investigator.

The FBI clearly doesn’t want to do this investigation. If the IRS targeting scandal is as bad as it appears so far, the investigation is going to be long and messy, and possibly end up sending some federal bureaucrats to jail. I doubt this outcome has much appeal to other federal bureaucrats.

I don’t know much about how the FBI operates. I don’t know how much influence investigators have over the work that is assigned to them. But if they have any influence at all, even informal influence, then it’s quite possible that assignments to the investigative team are being passed around inside the FBI like a hot potato.

Put yourself inside the head of someone at the FBI being assigned to investigate the IRS. Here are some of the thoughts I imagine you could have:

  • “If I find something really bad, the Obama administration isn’t going to like it. Or me, for bringing it out. Will they torpedo me? Will I find myself being smeared?”
  • “What if I find some real wrongdoing, and someone at the IRS decides to retaliate?”
  • “Taking down the IRS could mean the FBI is next. We’ve had our own share of messes over the years.”
  • “No matter how this thing turns out, my career is probably going to take a hit.”

Given the realities of the situation, if you worked at the FBI, would you want to be on the investigative team? And if you get stuck on it, are you more interested in getting to the bottom of the mess or mollifying the political class to minimize the impact on you personally?

The FBI has been cruising on a reputation of professionalism that I think vanished in fact long ago. From their incompetent labs to suppressing information to protect Obama, they are far more political and far less professional than they would like to pretend.

Given that problem, will the FBI be motivated and capable enough to get to the bottom of the scandal? I doubt it. Oh, we’ll have a pro-forma investigation at some point. But I’m betting we’ll find out a lot more through the lawsuits launched by Tea Party groups. We might find even more with a special prosecutor if the Democrats would allow one to be appointed, but in their own craven political interests, they probably won’t.

Somewhere on the federal side, a scapegoat will eventually be found, possibly two or three. They will be fired, and the propaganda arm of the Democratic Party will work overtime selling the “Nothing more to see, time to move along” narrative.

They have to. The left-leaning political class recognizes the possible damage if they can’t contain this scandal. It was bad enough when the media chose sides in the left-vs-right political battle. If those on the right also become convinced that the entire federal bureaucracy has similarly chosen sides, then they will likely conclude that our current political differences can’t possibly be decided through normal political means. They will feel, rightly, that the system is rigged against them.

Which would mean that they come to the same conclusion many of us came to a while back.

    >>>>> Happy Birthday America

  • Can’t find a fox to investigate the henhouse slaughter?

  • If there really is no investigation, they will crucify Obama.
    Watergate will be a primer.

    • Who will crucify him? The media? They’ve already gone to sleep on this?
The Democrats? Elijah Cummings already shot off his deranged mouth and none of the other Dems called him on it.
Billy is right, and I might add: When reason and persuasion are not available anymore only violence is left.

      • When reason and persuasion are not available anymore only violence is left.

Why do you think they want more gun control laws?  Why do you think they want PRISM and every other tracking software to gather as much intelligence as possible?
The true danger comes from Democrats and their ilk who project their own cowardice onto their political opponents, and simply assume that even if the government goes too far, those rednecks and militia nuts will give in to overwhelming military and paramilitary force.  A few might be crazy enough to do something, but when they are crushed, it will only serve as an example to terrify the others.
Their inability to predict what their political enemies will do means they will not see the actual potential for violence.  They only see political victories through elections, legislation, and court cases.  More points for their side.  But when they rig the system so much that their political enemies can not find relief at the ballot box or jury box, the only thing left is the cartridge box.  A man is most dangerous when he has nothing left to lose.  (N.B. I am not advocating violence, just pointing out the extreme danger that lies in the current direction that some Democrats want to go.)
Before the rash of scandals all hit earlier this year, Democrats were basking in the glow of the 2012 election, the tax hikes, and seeing the possibilities from Sandy Hook.  The more vocal were mentally masturbating over the fantasy of the end of the Republican party.  Crushing the enemy, effecting a one party rule to sweep out the old-fashioned way of thinking, to pave the way for glorious new era without partisanship–what could go wrong?
Democrats and their ilk cannot imagine taking up arms to resist tyranny.  That sort of thing happens in other countries with weak governments, or in the distant past.  The American Revolution might as well be about hobbits and elves–entertaining tales which have no relevance to modern America.  Even as they see the American military struggling to deal with asymmetrical warfare in Iraq and Afghanistan, and many take pleasure in the US getting its “comeuppance”, they don’t take the essential lessons from it.
I certainly do not want things to get so bad that violence breaks out in America.  Innocents will suffer.  And, there are many outcomes which are worse than the status quo.  The best thing to happen now would be for those in power to recognize the dangers and back off.  I am afraid that, from everything I’ve seen, there aren’t people in power who are smart enough to see that.

  • The “O” files – Special Agents Dana Scully and Fox Muldar are on the job, only now they’re hunting down the truth in the Obama scandals.  Are there enough years left in their lives to get to the bottom of the many sordid tales that all point like a compass to the alien in the Oval Office?

Bwaaahahahahahahahahahahah – we’re screwed, but you knew that.

  • There appears to be nothing that Obama cannot and has not made worse.
When that reaches the FBI…and our military…as being made political organs of the Obamabanana Republic, things are dark, indeed.

    • ‘and our military’
We’re safer now because openly gay soldiers…..
      Huh?

      • I think particularly of the astounding craven PC chain of command that allowed Maj. Jihad to kill a room full of soldiers and their dependents.
ALONG with a Navy area commander stating that global warming is the greatest threat he faces in the Pacific.
        I COULD go on…

        • “allowed Maj. Jihad to kill a room full of soldiers and their dependents.”
Bah, occasionally you get work place violence.  You know how that is, lawyers flinging legal briefs at each other, programmers writing server code functions to mangle incoming client requests.

sign… further proof to me of the Obamafication of the military.
I’m trying to figure out why a mass murder committed in 2009 is JUST finally coming to trial after roughly 4 years, took almost the same amount of time to enter and conclude the 2nd World War.
Now the Obama loving part of me suspects that it was deliberately scheduled to occur AFTER the conclusion of the 2012 election but I’m SURE that’s not the case (cough cough gasp choke) to avoid any potential fallout for our beloved Barry, but well, that just can’t be, can it.

I’m sure it’s about gathering evidence and testimony and preparing for prosecution/defense and all and there were no political considerations at all,
well, apart from declaring it work place violence that is…

          • Speaking of Lady Justice …
But when she turns her back on the boy,
            He creeps up from behind.

            Bang! Bang! Obama’s silver hammer
            Came down upon her head.
            Clang! Clang! Obama’s silver hammer
Made sure that She was dead.

          • He is still drawing a major’s salary.  That, alone, is despicable.

  • The solution is plain and simple. Hire some illegal aliens to do the work that Americans refuse to do. In my humble opinion, I would suggest some Mandarins. They can be really, totally ruthless. Or Russian mobsters. Those people really don’t play. Who does the legal work for the Colombian cartels? They definitely have to be sharp and on their toes. As long as we are hiring “illegals” we might as well get really illegal. The problem them is getting rid of them once they have cleaned up the IRS.

  • Or perhaps there is no real scandal and this is mostly a non-issue, unimportant, and serves only to distract the right wing scandalmongers who really wish they could have a scandal so they wouldn’t have to deal with how they are losing the real political contest.  Just watch – nothing will come of it, you’ll complain the media is biased and Obama blocked things, and life will go on.

    • “Or perhaps there is no real scandal and this is mostly a non-issue,”

Scandal or not, Idiot, when the FBI promises Congress there will be an investigation, they have to investigate.

      I repeat, idiot.

    • We’ll just make sure it happens to you next, and I’ll spit these words back in your face.

      With relish.

      • Scott is just too happy when people he dislikes are being crushed under the machinery of government.  And, he feels insulated enough that he doesn’t think any of the steady encroachment onto individual rights will impact him, or that the malignant growth of government power will work against him.
But I would rather he not be impacted negatively by government abuse of power, simply because that would certainly involve all sorts of collateral harm to people who haven’t taken the craven, unethical stances on politics he does.  Even if he, through his political actions, deserves to suffer everything done to victims of the policies and politicians he endorses and attempts to protect through his propaganda, I’d rather he get off Scot free, rather than risk one single person being harmed.
That is what makes me, along with just about everyone else here, morally superior to Scott.  And, because he is so narcissistic, he will never understand.

    • Again, you don’t read for comprehension, if you bother to read at all.

      • Perhaps it’s a problem from reading academic social science bull$#!+ all the time. He might have lost the ability to read and parse plain English, if indeed he ever had it.

Goodness knows he hasn’t shown any ability to read and understand anything we have said around here.

        • He reads long enough to see the letters “IRS” and then starts writing his smarmy canned drivel.

          • He’s an ersatz propagandist.  I suspect he simply is not smart enough to read the original article, understand it, and synthesize a pertinent rebuttal.
It’s like Rahm Emanuel thumbing his nose and sticking out his tongue at the inauguration.  Except Rahm is far more intelligent and more mature.

          • He’s an ersatz propagandist.

Is that like being a glacia fruit…???

    • Here you are again, serving as the stolid (which means ‘STUPID’) repeater of teh moonbattery talking points.
      Did you notice…
      1. Lerner has said she will testify if granted IMMUNITY…???
      2. The Chicago Tribune has called for a special prosecutor…???
      3. Immigration “reform” is a dead letter because NOBODY believes Obama (or a “ruler” like him) will follow the law…whatever it is.
      BTW
STILL looking for you to respond to my models…provide your own…provide a citation to “historical fact”.
      Liar.

    • …you’ll complain the media is biased and Obama blocked things, and life will go on.

Except the first two assertions are true, but the last is not.
      See Benghazi, scandal surrounding

      • Indeed, but remember that Scottie is a post-modernist, so he has a different idea of “true”. For him, “true” means what you can get enough people around you to believe, i.e., the prevailing narrative. Reality has nothing to do with it.

        • Which, if you think about it, should be totally mortifying.  A supposedly rational human being, who eschews rationality.
BECAUSE somebody convinced him to BE NOT RATIONAL was a virtue.
          Gob-smacking.

          • To slightly alter something from that famous philosopher Obi Wan Kenobi, “The Force [fatuous bull$#!+) can be a strong influence on the weak minded.”

Academics are easy prey for pretentious French philosophers. When one of your selling points is being obscure and “notoriously abstruse“, who else would pay any attention to you?

Besides, reality is scary. It’s for hard-headed folks like you and I. For the soft-headed, weak-minded type, it’s much more pleasant to deny it exists, and cosset oneself in the fantasy land of academia where one doesn’t have to face it. Especially if one can find an academic redoubt in the middle of nowhere, so that even the daily grind of living in a city doesn’t challenge the fantasy.

          • Yah.  Can you imagine that life?  I mean, the scenery might be lovely, every place outside your own skull.  In there, you are living in a self-executed slum where reality poses a daily existential danger to your entire identity.
            Plus….moose.

    • President Obama himself called it outrageous. Are you saying he is wrong or that he lied? Please clarify.
Also, the IG showed 292-6 for flagging and none of the lib groups went for more scrutiny.
Ok, so let’s ignore what the president said, and the actual facts, and let’s assume the right is wrong.
You should still support an energetic investigation, because this is not some little error in foreign policy or some lying on TV. This is the politicization of the IRS. Even if it is not true there is a fire despite the copious smoke, you should want to make your political opponents feel comfortable that what you say is true. An investigation helps that.
Think of this as a white cop killing a black teenager. You think the cop did nothing wrong, but you still have an investigation because you know the black community is suspicious of the situation.
Pushing the “nothing to see here folks” line does the opposite. It confirms suspicions of a cover up.
Keep in mind we are talking about the all-powerful and supposedly non-partisan taxing agency. Its supposed to be like Caesar’s wife.

      • There is a culture in the Obamabanana Republic that compels the Sec Of State to lie about being on his freaking boat, instead of tending to a crisis in Egypt.
Actually, given that it was Kerry…that might have been good.  The best he could do for us.

      • He has a certain point.  There’s nothing to see here because these orders didn’t necessarily have to come from the Whitehouse.  The organization is corrupted by years democratic nepotism and recent leadership influenced by Team Obama and the tone of non-accountability set by the Whitehouse.  Team Obama knew the kind of people they were appointing.  These people knew what Team Obama wants.  And they knew the worst consequence for them would be a job change to some Democrat Party position or some job with a Democrat benefactor.  So they just did it.

The Whitehouse could be involved, but other than ensuring no serious consequences after the fact, it doesn’t have to be.

          • I thought Scotty was going to stay and play a while.  You know…”teach us”…

          • Rags, that’s one of the things I howl most loudly at when he says it.

Sure, I want to take my political and economic instruction from a nobody with no known accomplishments outside academia, who teaches at a place in the woods that’s barely above a community college, and who has a demonstrated inability to understand, explain, or predict political events. Not to mention a manner more smug and condescending than any instructor I ever had in real life.

I don’t really think he has anything to teach me except how to steal pizzas, and I don’t think I want to learn that.

          • Right there witcha, Billy.  Personally, it is an actual nightmare of mine, being in a confined space with a narcissistic boob, and being unable to flee or stop the noise…  Kind of like the rat cage in 1984, but with taller rats.

    • Or perhaps there is no real scandal…

Even the IRS admits to discrimination and malfeasance, but Baghdad Scott declares there is nothing.

Just watch – nothing will come of it, you’ll complain the media is biased and Obama blocked things, and life will go on.

You are probably correct that nothing substantive will come of it, and those who abused their power will get away with it, as with most political malfeasance which goes unpunished.
The fact that you’re smugly happy with that shows how immoral you are.
If you had any respect for individual freedom, you’d oppose all abuse of power, regardless of political party, or ideological consideration.
