We share the same climate as … the Romans?

What climate alarmists will swear to is a) today’s climate is unprecedented in human history and b) is a result of human action (specifically, industrialization).

But what if these conditions have existed prior to now during another era?  Wouldn’t that put the end to both “a” and “b”?  Well you’d think the Medieval Warm Period would have done that, but alarmists have all but handwaved that away as an “anomaly” if they admit it existed at all.

However, a study has found another era that seems to have shared our climate:

A Swedish study found that the planet was warmer in ancient Roman times and the Middle Ages than today, challenging the mainstream idea that man-made greenhouse gas emissions are the main drivers of global warming.

The study, by scientist Leif Kullman, analyzed 455 “radiocarbon-dated mega-fossils” in the Scandes mountains and found that tree lines for different species of trees were higher during the Roman and Medieval times than they are today. Not only that, but the temperatures were higher as well.

Oh, my.  Those industrialized Romans must have been the blame.  Right?  I mean if you choose to be consistent about your argument, wouldn’t you have to at least consider that as a claim to why the Roman era was even warmer than now (burning that fossil fuel, huh)?  I mean, if you’re sure it is human action leading to the rise in temperatures and, specifically, industrialization?

Yeah, that’d be the logical approach, wouldn’t it?  So this new data (among all the other “new” data that is so roundly ignored by so-called scientists who are pushing the alarmist line) is very inconvenient.  And, in reality, the study points out that 5,000 to 9,000 years ago, without any real human action or industrialization, the global temperature was even higher than it was during the Medieval Warm Period and the Roman era:

“Historical tree line positions are viewed in relation to early 21st century equivalents, and indicate that tree line elevations attained during the past century and in association with modern climate warming are highly unusual, but not unique, phenomena from the perspective of the past 4,800 years,” Kullman found. “Prior to that, the pine tree line (and summer temperatures) was consistently higher than present, as it was also during the Roman and Medieval periods.”

Kullman also wrote that “summer temperatures during the early Holocene thermal optimum may have been 2.3°C higher than present.” The “Holocene thermal optimum was a warm period that occurred between 9,000 and 5,000 years ago. This warm period was followed by a gradual cooling period.”

According to Kullman, the temperature spikes were during the Roman and Medieval warming periods “were succeeded by a distinct tree line/temperature dip, broadly corresponding to the Little Ice Age.”

So what’s a skeptic to do when he see’s this data which directly contradicts the alarmist claims?

That’s easy … remain very skeptical of the “science” underlying the alarmist nonsense and make sure that politicians don’t try to cash in on bad science by taxing you for something that just isn’t your problem.

  • Two items that just slay me…

    1. Arctic ice…not Anartic ice…has been exploding across el norte

    2. The Russians are building new HUGE classes of nuclear ice-breakers

  • I blame the Gracchi brothers.

  • Dammit you people!
    What is wrong with you!

I was given a piece of paper when I was born, and it said then (and still says now), very plainly in (english only) legalese that I AM GUARANTEED that the climate that existed when I was born and grew up would be the same climate I was entitled to experience throughout my life.  There were to be no reckless deviations into temperature ranges hotter or colder than those that existed on the date I was born.   We were not to get more rain, or less rain, more snow or less snow, etc, etc.
I don’t want to hear about Romans and the excuses they used to waltz around in leather and tin dresses and bed sheets instead of being properly dressed like American males in chino pants and button down oxford shirts as they went about their various conquests (and oppression and enslavement of MY ancestors I might add!)
All this business of denying that things are changing and like they were when I was born, and growing up is just silly.  Someone has to make good on my guarantee, and it seems to me that YOU people are probably responsible for these changes and that you should be billed to restore MY climate to it’s former salubrious and enjoyable four identifiable seasons post haste.

I cannot and will not be responsible if YOU people have either lost your warranty documentation and your proof of guarantee for the climate, but I damn well have mine and I want my climate to stay exactly as it was when I was born, per the guarantee I received.
In short, I have the paper that says if I am happy with my climate, I CAN KEEP IT!    And by God this is America, and I’ll sue your asses to enforce that!

    Good day sirs!

      • God’s Peace!  Someone with an ounce of justice and decency!

        Bless you!  Bless you!

        Here’s the info you requested……

      • That’s my account with the Bank of Istandwithphil.

  • I can hear them now … “… but it’s the Swedes ..

Firstly, evidence suggests that the Medieval Warm Period may have been warmer than today in many parts of the globe such as in the North Atlantic. This warming thereby allowed Vikings to travel further north than had been previously possible because of reductions in sea ice and land ice in the Arctic. However, evidence also suggests that some places were very much cooler than today including the tropical pacific.

… there have been multiple papers from Chile, China and Africa that show it was not confined to Europe and North America, or the North Hemisphere.

    • Well, not to mention the viking colonies in ‘Vinland’ which had to close up shop when the Zimbabweian empire, Egyptians, Romans, Chinese, Moghuls and North and South American Trirbal Confederations agreed on sequestering CO2 and caused the glaciers to advance over Greenland again.

  • You have to time these things when whats-his-name is actively posting here.  Then, he can denounce us all as Neanderthals who hate science (especially the quantum magic stuff) and leave in a huff.

    • Yes, so we can experience 24 karat irony: a social “scientist” who knows next to nothing about real science lecturing a group about science – even though that group contains many people with extensive training and direct experience in science.

In any rational world, he would shut up and sit still while we lecture *him*. But as with all narcissists, including our Narcissist-in-Chief, he’s convinced he knows more than everyone on the right about every possible subject.

      • I don’t think his narcissism is so much the issue as is his nihilism.

      • Ah, but think…
Erp is doing his civic duty as a good Collectivist tool when he lectures us on various topics, reciting his moonbattery talking-points.
All we, like sheep, have gone astray, and he has to nuuge us back into conformity with the Collectivist orthodoxy.  Like a good lil’ Stasi scold.

    • It so happens that it was colder during the time of the Neanderthals.
      Neanderthals didn’t drive SUVs.
      So there!

    • Yes, and then he’ll post a reactionary blog entry about it: “Dear Diary, today I got my a$$ kicked at school again by those doody-heads over at Q&O when all I did was talk down to them and say they had ODS! Mommy says I should stay away from them and take my Zoloft…”

  • The medieval and Roman warm periods were well established and “accepted” facts long ago, even appearing in early IPCC reports I believe. But they were subtly erased from history as “inconvenient truths” during the 90s when they became politically problematic and were supposedly killed by the infamous “hockey stick” which showed a basically flat temperature for centuries in the medieval period. But any half-educated monkey knows that various cultures blossomed and moved around at these times, from the Vikings in the north to various Polynesian peoples in the Pacific. The attempted erasure was based on non-science of the best Erbian kind, since only proxies go back that far and the methods for “calibrating” those proxies is no more than voodoo employed to achieve the desired result.

That some study shows that these previously well-established global phenomena actually did happen is news just goes to show (a) what poor memories people have and (b) what nonsense scientists are ready to endorse in the pursuit of their “noble” causes.

    • “what poor memories people have”

Last month’s Obamacare disasters….the deal for Iranian nukes, the Syrian WMD stockpile, China getting uppity…

What we want to know is will Duck Dynasty be on at the regular time?????!!!!!

    • Yes, but what have the Romans ever done for us?

Well, what does “unadjusted data” show us, anyhow…???

Everyone knows you have to torture numbers til they say what you want them to…

    • When NOAA and NASA keep “adjusting” the numbers to make them “politically correct”, you really have to wonder, if we just happen to fall into a situation like the Maunder Minimum or the Dalton Minimum, if they would even notice it.

      • At this point, only a fool would wholeheartedly accept ANY numbers produced by ANY agency of this administration.

        From NOAA to the BLS.

It’s gone beyond even trust but verify.  It’s strictly verify.

        • I just snort.

          Derisively.

Experience has taught us that…absent CURRENT proof to the contrary…they are lying to us.

          • And a moment’s thought tells you where that leads.

Of course, I heard yesterday on the Friday news dump that they’re increasing the chocolate ration from 15 to 13 ounces, so, there is SOME good news to be had.

          • And Pres. ScamWOW assured us “millions will have insurance on January 1″!

He was speaking of auto insurance, I guess.

  • Yesterday I noted that Reddit.com had decided to follow the lead of the Los Angeles Times, which ostentatiously announced recently that it would no longer print letters to the editor expressing skepticism of climate change orthodoxy. Such is the confidence in their position that all dissent has to be suppressed. Today a moderator of the Reddit.com science forum takes to the Puffington Host to recommend that all media outlets ban climate “deniers”…

See, Collectivist have to silence people.
Weak ideas have to be viciously protected.
