Doddering Old Fool Spouts Off

I just sat here, right this minute, and watched Andy Rooney suggest on 60 Minutes that we should make all income tax records public, and publish everyone’s tax records.  He doesn’t mind, he said, if ewveryone knows what he makes, and how much taxes he pays.

Well, guess what?  I do.  How much money I make, and what I do with it, is none of your goddam business.

Jebus Cripes, is there any freedom these morons are not willing to turn over to the government?

Oh come on, this could be kind of fun. You could tax-google all your friends and family and really know if they could afford the house, the cars, vacations, etc. Or figure out which childless family members to butter up to make sure you’re in the will.

And think of the fits it would give all those evil HR folks who would suddenly have to deal with the nightmare of every employee knowing every other employee’s salary.

I think the doddering old fool is on to something.

Here in NY, they bribe you with your own money to make your tax returns public via the State’s School TAx Relief (STAR) program wherein the state returns some of your money that the School District took from you via property taxes.  All you need to do is file an application with your local government assessor and include either your federal or state (which is essentially the federal one) income tax return to prove income eligibility.

No, no, you’re right, that’s not really making your income tax forms any more public than, as Benjamin Franklin said, of having three people keeping a secret.  Just ask Helen Jones-Kelley.

Btw, don’t take the above to be an indictment by me of school districts.  Most credit for the rise in school property taxes, as is the case with county property and sales taxes, goes to the state and the federal government mandates.  Sometimes I think they’ve learned they can look the heroes for saving us from the burdens of local government by first burdening the local governments with burdening us.

Obviously, the answer is “No”, and is no less valid for our having repeatedly given it over the years. This stuff all comes out, though, when there’s a liberal in charge. We saw it under Carter, and Clinton, too.  Of course, we were called liars for our pains.

    OK Andy…….lead by example.

No. As long as the ‘right’ people are in charge. Then when someone they don’t adore gets elected, they’ll go nuts about all the intrusion.

Unless I missed something and Andy Rooney now sets policy somewhere, what’s the big deal?  His comments were foolish, but they pretty much always are, no matter what he’s talking about.  He’s an old crank, take him with a grain of salt…

  • Eric Florack says:

But he does relate the positon of the emocrats so very well.
It’s why CBS keeps the guy around.

Again, unless I missed something, no one with any authority to set policy has mentioned this proposal or one similar to it.  With all the actual policies to debate/pick apart/get worked up over, it seems somewhat needless to pay so much attention to something Andy Rooney said in his weekly rant.

    NO!
Over my dead body, by God!
Have to say tho, I wonder how many posters were all thrilled to give up basic civil rights under the previous administration?  Not trolling or looking for an actual answer, just asking for intellectual and moral honesty with ourselves.  All sides need to examine the true strength of their convictions.  We will be both stronger and smarter if we do so.
FREEDOM! (not the Jake Featherston kind…)

  • flak says:

As a further aside, would/do you support income records being made public for gov’t employees. (as is the case now.)?
