Perhaps We Should Set Up Camps or Something

Bonnie Erbe, writing at the CBS News blog site, has had it up to here with all the hate speech, and its inevitable consequences.  So, she has a cunning plan.

If yesterday’s Holocaust Museum slaying of security guard and national hero Stephen Tyrone Johns is not a clarion call for banning hate speech, I don’t know what is…

Not only have we had three hate crime murders within the last two weeks (Mr. Johns, as noted above, Dr. George Tiller a week ago last Sunday, and Pvt. William Andrew Long by an American-born Muslim convert outside a recruiting station just before that.)…

It’s not enough to prosecute these murders as murders. They are hate-motivated crimes and each of these men had been under some sort of police surveillance prior to their actions. Isn’t it time we started rounding up promoters of hate before they kill?

Let’s call it “preventative detention”, or something equally innocuous.  Let’s pretend that it isn’t a suggestion that is so totalitarian, and so horribly un-American, that Ms. Erbe should be ahsamed for having publicly presented such an evil proposal. You see, not being privy to the internal lives of my fellow citizens, I don’t know which of them will commit a crime, so I don’t feel comfortable imprisoning for the possible consequences of their thoughts.

Ms. Erbe, on the other hand, seems to have no such compunctions.

This is, by the way, where the logic of “hate crimes” inevitably takes you.  Once you realize that prosecution for hate crimes doesn’t stop them, you move to prevent them by other, inevitably totalitarian–means. And, eventually, the definition of what becomes “hate speech” starts expanding.

And so, we’ve arrived now where a “responsible” journalist can now advocate opening up prisons to house those whose only “crime” is to hold insufficiently pure thoughts.

Ms. Erbe’s comments are hateful towards hate speech and she should be jailed immediately.

(See how easy this is, Ms. Erbe, when you engage your mouth (okay, keyboard) wih your bain still in PARK?)

3 guesses who she’d want rounded up first….

Some people don’t have the hang of this freedom thing, do they?

    Who defines what constitutes “hate”?

  • Eric Florack says:

Wasn’t so long ago… back I think when I was still running on the Blogspot site… that I wrote a bit on ‘hate crimes’ and where things were headed under that banner. I caught hell from both left and right at the time… the usual nonsense. I’m paranoid, etc.   It’s one of those situations where I’m not overly happy about having been proven correct, but there it is, yet again.

It is interesting, Ms. Erbe cites three murders, calls them hate crimes, but misses the one person the Obama adminstration has called a terrorist, Thomas Lauria. His crime, attmpting to defend the Indiana state teachers’s pension fund from Obama.

  • kazoolist says:

I hope our new Hate Speech Czar will provide some guidelines on what qualifies as “hate speech”, because right now she has me all confused:

    Anti-Semitism? Check. Hate Speech.
Any and all criticism of abortion? Check. Hate Speech.
Hate-f*ck fantasies? No, apparently, hate-f*ck speech isn’t hate (if the target is “venom-spewing” and “invites [it]“).
Oh, wait - to the contrary! - now hate-f*ck speech is hate speech (even if about Michelle Malkin).

    • docjim505 says:

Ah, you beat me to it! I’m surprised that Erbe has the nerve to say ANYTHING about hate speech and hate crimes after her p*ss-weak “defense” of Michelle Malkin.

  • Titus Quinn says:

So long as we’re only rounding-up jews and gypsies, I don’t see the problem.

  • Come on, Please says:

Hmmm. Mrs. Erbe… Now where have I heard a similar name…..

  • docjim505 says:

I’ve thought about this a bit more. The idea of some sort of “preventative detention” makes sense in extreme cases (think of Cho). The obvious problem is that it runs head-on into one of the central tenents of law, which is that one cannot be punished unless and until he’s broken some sort of existing law. We’ve got a choice between two distasteful situations:

    1. Where people whom we suspect of being “dangerous” are allowed to run free until AFTER they harm innocent people, or;

    2. Where people are locked up on the mere suspicion that they MIGHT be “dangerous”.

I know which choice I think we’d all make, but let me suggest that our policy regarding the WoT has been essentially the second of the two choices, and most of us have ardently supported it. Isn’t this a logical inconsistency?

  • Harun says:

I suspect that if we had a major domestic terror problem, say like Sri Lanka did, you’d see people opt for 2 even in the USA.
Didn’t Lincoln suspend Habeas Corpus for a reason like this?

  • Keith_Indy says:

One has to wonder if that’s her “final solution” for ridding the world of hate speech…

  • Mark Steyn’s recent ordeal in Canada points to how close this has come, like right on the border there, dude.

In the U.K. expect a visit from the Scotland Yard detectives to investigate any stray comments you make about any sensitive group. You could be charged with “inciting racial hatred” or something equivalent if you criticize homosexual marriage.

Ms. Erbe might be floating a trial baloon, but she has an army behind her, just behind the next hill.

America is so over in the minds of people like that.

  • MarkD says:

I have no problem distinguishing the difference between a conspiracy to commit a violent crime and holding an unpopular opinion. Evidently, I’m in the minority.

  • The Gonzman says:

Not long ago, we had a thread on when violence would be an option for people, and my reply was “You ain’t paid to see those cards yet.”
Ms. Erbe, should such a thing come to pass, I will consider that to be the equivalent of someone saying “Call.”

  • capt joe says:

That name should have a surgeon general warning attached  to it :)

  • Eric Florack says:

You know, it strikes me as interesting that we’ve not seen the left end of the sphere light up with the indignation we’d surely have seen if anyone on the right were to make any noises of the sort of Erbe’s, as little as six months ago.
