Steve Benen is “shocked, shocked I tell you”, that some on the right are trying to hang the Iranian election shambles on Obama. He entitles his post:
“WHEN IN DOUBT, BLAME OBAMA…”
Of course, for 8 years, Benen and company made a cottage industry of substituting the name “Bush” for “Obama” while doing the very same thing. Apparently that’s gone the way of an Alzheimer patient’s memory of breakfast and they’ve awakened in a new world which began on January 20th of this year.
It would be funny if it wasn’t so insufferably hypocritical.

You have to ask if the decision to so quickly announce that they are still ready to negotiate with this regime in Iran while unhappy Iranians are still in the street reveals that Obama doesn’t really believe that street demonstrations will really work.
I’m not really sure how Benen got that Mitt Romney was blaming TAO for the Iranian election results from this:
“[T]he comments by the president last week that there was a robust debate going on in Iran was obviously entirely wrong-headed. What has occurred is that the election is a fraud, the results are inaccurate, and you’re seeing a brutal repression of the people as they protest.
“The president ought to come out and state exactly those words, indicate that this has been a terribly managed decision by the autocratic regime in Iran.
“It’s very clear that the president’s policies of going around the world and apologizing for America aren’t working…. [J]ust sweet talk and criticizing America is not going to enhance freedom in the world.”
Romney seems to be saying that TAO’s “apology tour” foreign policy is a mistake, that it isn’t helping us, and that he should in this instance get (verbally) tough with the mullahs regarding the election. There is a great deal to be critical of TAO, but I don’t see that he is to blame for the election results, which are wholly the fault of the mullahs. I think most people on the right would agree.
Benen, as is typical of the left, is setting up a strawman to get in a few gratuitous digs at the right who, may I say, have correctly ridiculed the left’s ridiculous belief that the Tehran government is a reasonable group of people who would be cooperative with us if not for the cowboy foreign policy of the hated George W. Bush. The left is being confronted with evidence that the mullahs are every bit as bad as we on the right have been saying, and by extension that their messiah’s foreign policy is an exercize in foolish naivete. This is mentally unbearable to them, and they’ve got to (somehow) blame the right to relieve the mental pressure.
[...] of course, as you recall from yesterday, Steve Benen was all upset that some were trying to pin this all on Obama. Today Benen is in league [...]
