Style Evolves

So, based on some comments throughout the day, I’ve made a revision to the site again.  What I see on my monitor is now red, dark blue, white, and taupe.  I don’t see the “olive green” any more.  If you still see olive green on your monitor, let me know, so that I can do some re-shading.

As far as the column widths go, the main content area is 1000 pixels wide.  A variable width template doesn’t work out for everyone.  Sorry, but that was one of the complaints with the old template, so If you use a really wide screen at 1900px wide, then this is something you’re gonna just have to deal with.

For everyone else, 1000px seems like a good compromise, although I can go wider.  I just don’t want to make people who are still using 1024×768 to have to scroll horizontally to see the whole page.

I see black on both sides and in the content I see the same colors as you. the content is centered and about 9-3/8″ wide while the black side bars are about 3- 3/4″ wide. I have a 21″ NEC with a 1600 X 1200 resolution running at 32 bit color.

  • Dale Franks says:

The sidebars are actually a dark steel blue, not black.  I think your monitor is going dark…

    • Brown says:

My color is corrected for my CAD/CAM software. If you will post the RGB or CMYK numbers for the side bars I can create a new profile. Will probably improve my web browsing.

  • rutmang says:

Much, much better with the dark blue IMO.  Thank you!

    I like it!
    Good colors!

  • gadfly says:

Darken the text color in the indented quotations and I will be very happy with your changes.  I  had noticed a long delay after calling your old blog theme template while  the text area changed from reverse  text to the lighter background.  Now it opens instantly!

Colors are as you describe them them except what you’re calling taupe, I’d call light grey.   In any case it’s much easier to read than the old style.
For those set at high resolution  resulting in too small print (that would be me), there is always Control + to enlarge.
    Looks good.

It loads like 10X faster for me, I’m using Firefox 5.0.

  • KR says:

What about people who are using 640×480? That’s just as relevant in 2009 as 1024×768. :P
Seriously though, I like the new design.

  • Dale Franks says:

It’s actually a texture image, not a color, but the base color of the image to which the texture is applied is RGB 16,26,35

  • Dale Franks says:

Oh, and the RGB value for the taupe boxes on the sidebar is 211,202,167.

    A few points:

Using Safari on iPhone, the comment text editor is no longer usable – clicking on it doesn’t permit editing.  I can’t post comments.
Also on iPhone, with the old theme there was a button to “use mobile theme” that presented a quite nice mobile-oriented UI.  That is gone.
Why don’t you change all the measurements to be in “em” instead of “px”?  That is what sites like http://www.aol.com do in order to make sure that the site displays in correct proportion no matter what the browser window size or font size.  Try enlarging the text on it – unless they’ve grossly changed the design, it’ll all expand in proportion.  It would make different resolutions easier.

  • Nate says:

Interesting.  I just posted a comment and used the “unordered list” button, but that formatting appears to have disappeared from the post now as I preview it before moderation.

  • Brown says:

Got it! Can even see the texture on the side bars now. Thanks.

  • Wacky Hermit says:

    Looks great! Thanks Dale!

  • G Dog says:

FYI, if you don’t see the colors correctly hold down the shift key while clicking refresh on your browser so it clears the cache.

because I’m using Artisteer to generate the template, I’m just accepting the output as is. I don’t have hours and hours to create specialized templates.

    Much easier to read.

    Thank you.
    Cheers.

  • Eric Florack says:

A nice look, Dale. My only thing is the font size in the body.I usually make it a bit larger in deference to the older audience. (like myself… chuckle) Of course, it’s one of the first things I change in WP templates anyway, so perhaps it’s just me, I dunno.

Also, the Mobile plugin is still doing it’s thing well in my Palm and on my other mobile devices. I gather, though I admit not having checked.. that the more recent versions of that plug have a special CSS for Iphones and such. That change may be affecting Nates question, though that’s just a guess.

    Again, nice work.

  • Patrick says:

I liked the old one better. But this will work. I like wide templates myself. For those who would complain about it being too wide, I tell ‘em put down the coke spoon and go get a new computer with a nice monitor. ;)

  • Patrick says:

Oh why not? Ain’t like we Bloggers have lives anyhow! :D :P ;)

  • Dion says:

I liked the darker background much better. It was easier on my eyes. It’s a sharp layout, but the previous one was fine. Leave it alone, damn it!

Heh….. Sound like some of my users… I thought about changing mine. But nah… been this way too long… I like it
