Senate Votes To Defund ACORN

You may remember that in my last post about ACORN (about the Census Bureau ending its relations ship with ACORN) I ended it calling for a complete defunding of ACORN. I’m pleased to announce that the Senate has heard me.

OK, I know better, but I’ve always wanted to say something like that – there, I’ve got it out of my system. If they won’t listen to a town full of tea partiers, I doubt they’re listening to me.

My guess is the third pimp sting in NYC did ACORN in. It becomes much harder to claim the people telling the faux pimp and prostitute how to scam the loan industry and the IRS weren’t trained to do so when they’re the third group to do it.

So this is good news:

The Senate voted Monday to block the Housing and Urban Development Department from giving grants to ACORN, a community organization under fire in several voter-registration fraud cases.

The 83-7 vote would deny housing and community grant funding to ACORN, which stands for the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now.

The action came as the group is suffering from bad publicity after a duo of conservative activists posing as a prostitute and her pimp released hidden-camera videos in which ACORN employees in Baltimore gave advice on house-buying and how to account on tax forms for the woman’s income. Two other videos, aired frequently on media outlets such as the Fox News Channel, depict similar situations in ACORN offices in Brooklyn and Washington, D.C.

The Senate’s move would mean that ACORN would not be able to win HUD grants for programs such as counseling low-income people on how to get mortgages and for fair housing education and outreach.

The 7 voting against were 6 Democrats and 1 Socialist:

* Dick Durbin (D-IL)
* Roland Burris (D-IL)
* Robert Casey (D-PA)
* Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY)
* Patrick Leahy (D-VT)
* Bernie Sanders (I-VT)
* Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI)

Apparently what ACORN has engaged in is all right with them.

I’m surprised, given the present atmosphere in DC that a real, honest to goodness bi-partisan vote could be made – but I guess the third video is a charm.

ACORN has sucked down 53 million tax payer dollars since 1994. My guess is they’ll dissolve ACORN, wait a few months and then reinvent themselves as some new group named after a nut. And as an aside, I have to wonder if the IRS will now review the tax forms submitted with ACORN as the preparer – with the advice they were handing out in Baltimore, DC and NYC there may be enough in back taxes and penalties to pay for all the uninsured and save ourselves from Obamacare. The silver lining in all of this.

Oh who am I kidding – I’m dancing in the street over this bit of misfortune and, hopefully, the demise of one of the most corrupt taxpayer supported organizations out there.

So long ACORN.

  • Wowee! It seems the Dems – at least most of ‘em – got the message! The ones that supported continued business with ACORN are mostly northeastern leftists and the two Illinois losers.

    It seems that even some in the media are having to acknowledge the shady organizations that Team Obama has enlisted.

    • Wanna bet?

      Here’s the line they’re going to take- “conservative media outlets” are now doing agenda-driven “stings” Fox = evil!

      Here’s the other one “Acorn isn’t that important anyway” (ala Van Jones)

      Watch and learn

  • Lets make no mistake. All 7 pieces of human excrement you listed who voted against it have basically declared their support for:

    1) Prostitution
    2) Tax evasion
    3) Pimping
    4) Underage sex slavery (since the fake pimps mentioned they would use underage girls)

    Disgusting.

    • Shark, all those things you mentioned are specific RICO triggers. If there is no RICO investigation then it is because it was stopped at the top.

      Yeah, like that would be a big surprise

  • How many mafiosi have we locked up over the years, yet the mafia is still very much alive and well? How many drug dealers are in our prisons (or dead), yet the drug trade continues unabated?

    The dems found a good way to use a false “community organization” to assist them in grasping for more money and power. They won’t give that up easily.

    And note how MiniTru portrays this issue (when they bother to acknowledge it at all):

    Sen. Mike Johanns has proposed an amendment to block federal funding for a national organization that works to provide education and housing opportunities for low-income people. (1)

    That B*STARD! Why, this is almost as bad as the time that Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower visciously attacked the German national worker’s political party, or when Presidents Kennedy and Johnson used the FBI and the military to crush and break up a Southern social club!

    / sarc

    I’m waiting for MiniTru to start publishing reports about the “sordid” personal histories of O’Keefe and Giles; they’ll do to those two what they’ve done to Sarah Palin and Joe the Plumber.

    It will be impossible to completely stop political parties from using cat’s paws and other front organizations. The best we can hope for is for Uncle Sugar to get out of the business of funding them.

    Fat chance.

  • I see you wonderful patriots and admirers of the American legal system are ignoring the fact that the funding is suspended pending the outcome of the single video case at the heart of this, and that video is now being challenged by ACORN as having been doctored. Add to that the fact that this dynamic duo pulled this little entrapment sting in city after city after city until they got a result they could run with, and you have an attempt to smear a large organization over the actions of a few people..who were immediately let go after hdqtrs were made aware.
    This isn’t over so take some ridalin and calm down kiddies. You might not be getting your cup of fresh blood. Sorry.

  • To Dan freaking Oblivious:

    >>>outcome of the single video case at the heart of this

    3 video tapes in 3 different geographic locations, not one.

    Did you see that tape? Hard to imagine that it was doctored.

    If the tape was doctored, why fire those people? yeah, I thought so. snort

    The doctored charge is their very lame bullsh1t attempt to get useful freakin’ idiot drones like yourself to come here and parrot their talking points.

    The MSM may give them cover and Holder’s DOJ might not prosecute because of how bad this makes the big zero look, but the average common people are seeing it and come 2010 lets see who laughs last.

  • Oh and Dan, the speech bump is over and the big zero’s popularity is heading for the crapper where his admin belongs

    • I wonder how many of those in favor have even an inkling of a clue about what is IN the bill and what the consequences would be.

  • Once is happenstance.
    Twice is coincidence.
    Three times is enemy action.

    RICO!

  • Oh, look at this, ACORN is actually operating illegally in the state of Maryland

    http://biggovernment.com/2009/09/15/exclusive-acorn-illegally-operating-in-maryland/

    Their business licenses were forfeited due to improper practices. Maryland is usually very strict on these sorts of things and the fines are generally very heavy.

    Not ask yourself why ACORN can continue to operate when no one else would be allowed to. Ask yourself why the State Attorney wants to prosecute the film makers but not an illegal business.

    hmmm….

  • Well, this should be fun. There is a 4th tape being released and it is pitched as the mother lode. God these guys are smart.

  • interesting article detailing connections

    http://www.frontpagemag.com/readArticle.aspx?ARTID=36289

  • Just listened to it. Amazing how lifelike those doctored tapes are ;)

  • Not to mention the numerous indictments over voter fraud…

    What is the psychological extreme of Denial?

  • Tape 5 is coming out today or tomorrow

    And so the NYT times scrubs their coverage. Maybe they need the money and with Uncle O shoveling it into Acorn there is lots to get.

  • Gee cat joe, no matter how many times you desperately try to spin things, the fact is the org has 500,000 members and a few were entrapt by a team funded by the RNC that tried numerous times to get the results they were shooting for. I guess you’re just too mentally overwhelmed to figure out that a small gaff can be amplified by dishonest videographers by that darn out-of-synch audio.
    The right is terrified of ACORN cuz they signed up 1.3 million new minority and poor democrat voters, not to mention successful campaigns to raise wages..so the flying monkeys have to go after them any way they can.
    Welcome to swiftboat scheming, the SOP for our republican patriots…fear and smear…that’s all they can do cuz they can’t win over voters on the issues.
    Gotcha politics..It is illegal methinks to video someone without their permission, and if there was post-production going on here, the whole black op will go down in flames..where it belongs.

    Let’s just see Vern.

  • hmmmm ok…good they defund them…obvious choice>!

  • Glad you brought up Mickey and donald…it’s a wonderful refutation of the righting meme about how ACORN engages in voter fraud…neither Disney character can…vote.
    The defund is old news and irrelavent, congress runs from smoke, and what is defunded can refunded.
    In 1777, congress defunded religion.

    • Uh, yeah they can, if the voter registration cards are used to attempt to get absentee ballots.

      Oh, and now the states are starting to defund ACORN – the old one-two punch.
