Happy “Guantanamo Is Finally Closed” Day

Wait, what …?

It’s still open?

You’re kidding?!

But I thought …

Wasn’t this the day the Obama administration promised it would be closed?

Well, well.

And what else?

The Obama administration has decided to continue to imprison without trials nearly 50 detainees at the Guantánamo Bay military prison in Cuba because a high-level task force has concluded that they are too difficult to prosecute but too dangerous to release, an administration official said on Thursday.

So the Obama administration has essentially agreed with the Bush administration about holding certain detainees without a trial and the “symbol of American shame” remains open in order to do that?

Hope and change.

I’m sure Olberman will do a ‘despicable’ American segment on Obama tonight…

Things sure do look different when you are the one warming that seat!

  • KR says:

Might as well call him Barack O’Cheney.

Except, of course, Dick Cheney supports gay marriage.

You think the worthless piece of offal currently in the White House will ever give even a private apology to the man he spent years ignorantly savaging?

If there wasn’t so much at stake, watching these clowns self destruct would be entertaining.
OK, so it’s a little entertaining, anyway.

Well, it’s nice to see reason triumph over posturing, at least.
I’d rather have the President renege on that promise than fulfill it, all things considered.

    KR: Ouch. Hah.

    • Oh he’s not reneging due to reason. He’s doing so because he can’t figure out an alternative that is feasible and won’t subject him to ridicule. His promise was based in ignorance, and just as he’s suddenly admitted he overestimated his ability to have an impact on the Israeli/Palestinian problem, Guantanamo was a promise made in a similar state of ignorance. What he’ll try to do now is simply ignore it and the promise.

Well.  It’s good that you agree with Obama.  For whatever reason.  Right?

Otherwise, you would have some sort of idea to deal with the conundrum.  Wouldn’t you?

        Cheers.

No, see, because I’m pretty sure that Bruce is ok with the idea of GitMo, and thinks closing it down would be moronic.

This is Obama agreeing with Bruce, since Bruce has held his opinion long before Obama made his ignorant promise.
