Brazil says “no” to Iranian sanctions
So far this South American swing has been a real tour de force for Hillary Clinton – first she manages to anger one of our more stalwart allies by giving false Argentine claims legitimacy and now Ms. Clinton has managed to get Brazil to publicly refuse our attempt to increase sanctions on Iran.
Brazil.
We can’t even get Brazil to go along with us:
Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva pre-empted Clinton even before she could make the case for new United Nations Security Council penalties. Silva is an outspoken opponent of sanctions, and his country currently sits on the Security Council, which will be asked to approve its toughest-ever penalties on Iran later this year.
“It is not prudent to push Iran against a wall,” Silva told reporters hours before meeting with Clinton. “The prudent thing is to establish negotiations.”
Clinton told a news conference she respects Brazil’s position but thinks if there is any possibility of negotiating with Iran, it would happen only after a new round of sanctions.
So that’s at least one no vote on the UN’s Security Council. China and Russia are no fans of the idea. That could mean up to 3 no votes. Yup, this sanctions thing is really taking off.
The U.S. officials said that despite clear differences at the moment, the Brazilians assured Clinton their current position was not “etched in stone.”
The officials spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the private diplomatic exchange.
That’s diplo speech for “yeah, had a great time and I promise I’ll call you tomorrow”.

Sheesh, the Falklands thing that you’re having a hissy fit about is a non-story getting no attention (it really is meaningless), and no one expects Iranian sanctions to happen anyway. You’re so focused on ODS and finding anything negative to say that you’re grasping at non-stories and trying to magnify them. Silly, silly, silly. Of course, Bush was having even less luck at foreign policy. The fact is, the US isn’t the power it used to be, and it’s been that way since about 2004.
Scott, you really think the Falklands is a non story. Is it now your position that continuing to “diss” our longest and strongest ally while pandering to Argentina is a non story? That is a strange position to take.
Besides, you are flat out wrong (again). If you were to do a search on “Argentina Falklands Clinton”, you would find the first three pages (at least) are references to mainstream media stories about Clinton and the Falklands. I suspect what you are seeing is the administration pretending the statement was never made. This gang has sure made a hash of foreign policy.

Pretty much every time you say something is a non-starter, you are just trying to cover up a gaff one of your beloved ‘progressives’ made. Clinton is getting her rather large and frumpy a$$ handed to her, and to you it’s a ‘non-starter’. Yeah… riggghhhttt….
So, it’s your contention then that if it’s not covered to YOUR satisfaction by the American media, it’s not important (sorta like the global warming scandals the rest of the world is reading about….)
