Lindsey Graham finally gets the message … and delivers one

And that message: is if your political opponents are in a hole of their own making, don’t throw them a rope.

That’s precisely what Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) was in the middle of doing prior to this past week.  He was the lone Republican Senator working on the “climate” bill with Senators John Kerry (D-VN) and Joe Lieberman (I-CT).  Additionally, he was also the only Republican Senator working on immigration.

This past weekend, Graham pulled out of the cap-and-trade “climate” bill, leaving it in doubt – although word now has it that it was Harry Reid (D-Desperate) who decided it must wait for immigration. That would actually make sense since it is Harry Reid who is in re-election trouble in a state with a large Hispanic population who’ve complained Democrats haven’t done anything with immigration.

Graham seems to have finally awakened to the fact that he has an opportunity to slow both cap-and-trade and immigration down and hobble the administration’s agenda in this Congress. Today he made it clear that immigration was off the table, as far as he was concerned, for this year – if not next:

Sen. Lindsey Graham, the sole Republican working on a bill to legalize illegal immigrants, in effect put the bill on the shelf on Tuesday, saying that a debate now would destroy any prospects for passage and that the issue needs to wait until 2012.

The remarks likely signal the end of any serious chance for broad immigration legislation to pass this year, since Mr. Graham, South Carolina Republican, was the best hope for a partnership with President Obama and Democrats who want to write a bill.

Unlike the cap-and-trade bill, there has been no immigration bill yet written. So, given the process, even given priority, legislation would take months and months before passage. Graham was the forlorn hope of Reid and the Democrats on immigration. He effectively slammed that door in Reid’s face yesterday. And he’s playing some smart politics in how he’s framing his decision. He’s tapping into that latent anger within much of the country about the refusal of the federal government to secure the borders.

“It is impossible for me and any other serious Democrat to get this body to move forward until we prove to the American people we can secure our borders,” Mr. Graham told Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, who was testifying at a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing.

“I believe we can do it by 2012 if we’re smart,” he said.

Ms. Napolitano, a former governor of Arizona, disagreed with Mr. Graham’s evaluation of border security. She said she knows the southwest border as well as anyone and, by every measure Congress has laid out, the border is more secure: Fewer illegal immigrants are being apprehended, and more fencing and infrastructure have been deployed.

But under close questioning by Mr. Graham, Ms. Napolitano could not say whether she would declare the border secure if she were still the governor of Arizona. She called it an “unfair question.”

“It is a fair question, and I’ll give you my answer: I don’t think it is,” Mr. Graham said. “I think since the last effort to solve immigration the border situation has deteriorated.”

Popular position that plays well to the Tea Partiers and again points to ineffective government. Essentially, in one week, Graham has made the completion of the Democratic/Obama agenda much, much more difficult – if not impossible – during this session of Congress.

  • Graham has made the completion of the Democratic/Obama agenda much, much more difficult – if not impossible – during this session of Congress.

So now the Democrats can present the accomplishments of this Congress to the people:
    * A Stimulus Bill that did not stimulate
    * A Budget that blew all spending records and tripled the previous record for a deficit
    * A highly flawed and almost universally unpopular Health Care Bill
    * And virtually nothing in the one single area the public has demanded attention and the Democratic Leadership has promised action – Jobs.

And without even mentioning the lack of transparency, corruption, and hubris, people wonder why the Democrats are in such sad shape facing the November Midterms.

How’s that Hope & Change working out for you?

    • Added Note:  Part of me wonders if Grahan planned this all along – dangle the promise of breaking ranks in order to suck the Democrats into a hole they now have to crawl out of.

      Is Graham really that smart?

Are the Democrats really that Dumb?

Or was it just dumb luck?

      I wonder . . .

      • Isn’t this what Snowe did on ObamaCare ?   Somebody has the go into the “enemy camp.”

  • Is Graham really that smart?

    No. Blind pigs, acorns, etc.

  • … the border is more secure: Fewer illegal immigrants are being apprehended, and more fencing and infrastructure have been deployed

Perhaps the economy has more to do with this than anything Napolitano has done, but the problem is that those who are passing thru Arizona are more desperate than before, leading to more violence.

    • Fewer being apprehended should not immediately be assumed to be indicative of a decline in illegal crossings.  It could just as easily be indicative of  failure to apprehend.

Stating that fewer are apprehended seems, in fact to me, to be an attempt to cast what potentially could be a bad statistic in a good light.  I’m not saying that’s what this IS, but I worry about anyone who chooses that sort of phrasing.

  • McQUnlike the cap-and-trade bill, there has been no immigration bill yet written.

What the hell does the fact that a bill hasn’t been written have to do with anything in THIS Congress???  They’ve voted on Rube Goldberg bills that they obviously and admittedly didn’t read, then passed them through chicanery.  So, it isn’t much of a stretch for them to pass a blank sheet of paper with the intent that they’ll actually fill in the text later through reconciliation or some such game.

“It is impossible for me and any other serious Democrat to get this body to move forward until we prove to the American people we can secure our borders,” Mr. Graham told Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano…

I guess he’s had a chat with Yosemite Sam, who’s realized that he has to be tough on immigration… at least until after he beats Hayword in the primary.  Either that, or else the people of So. Carolina have threatened to do a Fort Sumter on his offices.

    SShiellIs Graham really that smart?

No.  Desperate, perhaps, but not smart.

SShiellAre the Democrats really that Dumb?

Yes.  They went to the well one time too many.  When they’ve gone so far with arrogant partisanship that they’ve lost Grahamnesty and the Maine Gals, they’ve clearly f*cked up big time.

  • “…in one week, Graham has made the completion of the Democratic/Obama agenda much, much more difficult – if not impossible …”
Ahhh.  When I read this I felt a tingle run up my leg.
Unfortunately, I think McQ is being way too optimistic here.  As long as they have access to the credit card to buy votes…hey!  wake up.  Passing bills they have not read?  Just what line are we waiting for them to cross?  If Ploume says that they need an “Immigration Bill” or they will not be re-elected;  we will all enjoy the benefits of an “Immigration Bill”.  Plus whatever debt it costs to get it passed.
Tell me why I am wrong.
Professor Erb (putative unknowing victim of the LN) will phrase it nicely after the passage…let’s see…
‘the new “Immigration Bill” will solve the border problem, the illegal immigrant problem, the drug problem, Mexico’s internal drug war problem, President Obama’s re-election problem…oh, wait…and anyway, I know it’s true because I read it in the NYT  and Time Magazine (two of America’s main news sources – and you know, if it’s “main” it has to be true.).”  I know these things because I too am a Maine news source.  Haha.

  • Ooops.  Damn.

  • Light Loafer Lindsey is only upset because his Lord and Master, Big John McCain told him to shut up while he tacks to the right in order to get reelected.  Once Straight Talk McCain gets reelected, he and his Poodle dog Lindsey will be back at it, making deals with the Democrats and waxing angry at the conservatives in their own party.

    • Mental Illness eh?  Well, that explains the last election and the continuing bout of Liberal Amnesia on all the hopey changey promises they made. One Big Ass Mistake America.

  • You are already behind the times, we’re getting both done.

  • “It is impossible for me and any other serious Democrat…
Whoops!  Your Freudian slip is showing, you RINO idjit.
