Why it is hard to take the UN seriously

I often call it the “third world debating club” because it gives visibility and a platform for such third world “notables” as Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe, Hugo Chavez of Venezuela and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of Iran.  And it often does bizarre and totally absurd things like this:

Without fanfare, the United Nations this week elected Iran to its Commission on the Status of Women, handing a four-year seat on the influential human rights body to a theocratic state in which stoning is enshrined in law and lashings are required for women judged “immodest.”

How do you take seriously a body which elects to its “Commission on the Status of Women” – a commission “dedicated exclusively to gender equality and advancement of women” -  a country which openly and proudly oppresses its women?

Only the UN can answer that question.

Iran – where yesterday one of the little brownshirt religious police leaders announced they’d start rounding up women who appeared to be sun tanned.

    Where is the NOW crowd?

Please. You dense righties get incensed over an obviously good thing. Can’t you see that electing Iran to this role will promote their own internal evolution towards better policies for women?

You thick righties are so distrustful. You never want to sit down and talk things out and give the other party a chance to explain, and then come to a pragmatic compromise that everyone can accept. In this case, for example, I suspect that Iran has conceded that it will only persecute two-thirds as many woman next year as this year. Isn’t that great progress?

Besides we have to deal with Iran as a regional power. They’re going to take over in Iraq any day now, as I’ve saying for years. You don’t want them on your bad side when they do that, do you?

  • Constitution First says:

Is this the same country that made it a crime for women to have a tan?
Is this the same country where the religious “leader” stated women lack of full-body cover is causing earthquakes?
“Stupid is, as stupid does.” Indeed!
