Quote of the Day – master of understatement edition

But, I would guess, a pretty typical story:

"I’m disappointed that we’ve only created or retained 55 jobs after receiving $111 million," said Wendy Greuel, the city’s controller. "With our local unemployment rate over 12 percent we need to do a better job cutting red tape and putting Angelenos back to work." According to the audit, the Los Angeles Department of Public Works spent $70 million in stimulus funds — in return, it created seven private sector jobs and saved seven workers from layoffs. Taxpayer cost per job: $1.5 million.

Anyone – tell me again how efficiently government does things and how we should "trust" it with our money because it will always spend it wisely? This, as we’ve seen, isn’t the only wasteful spending of taxed and borrowed money under the supposed stimulus. We also have funded such things as a study (for $823,000) by a UCLA research team to teach uncircumcised African men how to wash their genitals after having sex.

Certainly "shovel ready" wouldn’t you say?

The best part of the “Wash your junk” study is that it is to help prevent AIDS…

Maybe I missed a memo, but I don’t recall that being an effective method…  But what do I know?  I’m not backed by more than three quarters of a million dollars…

But I would like to be.  *hinthint*

I can’t wait until the Bush tax cuts expire, thus providing government with $4 trillion over the next ten years.  Four trillion dollars!  Why, they could create thousands of jobs with that much money!

  • John says:

And these are the people who will be saving us money by passing and implementing Obamacare.
$111 MILLION / 55 jobs = $2,018,181 per job.   Damn I should have offered to hire a few people.    I could pay them good wages and had a pile left over for a good trip.
I think it goes without saying,  we are so screwed.

The $107 million in stimulus cash awarded to Tom Carnahan, in what’s called a 1603 Grant, couldn’t have come at a worse time for his siblings, Democratic Senate hopeful Robin Carnahan and U.S. Rep. Russ Carnahan, both of whom are on the ballot in November.

  • kyle8 says:

In the first place this is based on flawed junk science. Merely using a causation-correlation that there are more cases of Aids among uncircumcised men is stupid. There are so many other factors, like for instance are circumcised men likely to have a higher number of religious individuals and so not pursue as much casual or homosexual sex?

And the second point, is that even if there is a correlation, what business is it ever of governments (in this case a foreign government) to tell you what to do with your package?

    • Ragspierre says:

      “All your package belonga us…”
The deal on washing may be to induce serious jock rot, since some of these guys would always be wet.  Resulting in a lowered…um…drive.

    • Tom Perkins says:

It’s per sexual activity Kyle.  And generally claiming correlation has nothing to do with causation a priori is itself a logical fallacy.  When a causative mechanism exists, and it does in this case, then interfering in the causative end should drop the result with which it is correlated,  and it in this case it does.  Sexual activity with a foreskin, especially when washing immediately afterwards is not done, both produces a greater incidence of small tears in the skin and traps any pathologic agents in close proximity to the tears.
It may turn out somehow to be coincidence, but I don’t think so.

    • jpm100 says:

The dominant regions of Africa with circumcision are Islamic with socially enforced (often strong) prohibitions against sex out of marriage.
      Â
So you can either attribute the correlation to that or circumcision.  Guess which explanation the established ‘progressives’ are going to grab onto?  Can’t tell kids they shouldn’t  _ _ _ _ the first person they see that peaks their interest.  That’s off message.
