It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool …

Here is an amazing letter to the editor at a college newspaper from a person who gives himself the title of "academic professional". I’ve looked at it off and on for a couple of days trying to figure out how to excerpt it and talk about this, well, fool. As it turns out, the best way to present it is to present it whole since excerpting it only takes away from the totality of the nonsense this "academic professional" is spouting.

In fact, as I read it, I have to tell you that it immediately reminded me of another “academic professional” that visits the comment section of our blog fairly regularly. The only difference I can see is the “academic professional” I quote below actually is a part of a major university instead of some backwoods school. Other than that, either could have written this:

The vast majority of 9/11 observances in this country cannot be seen as politically neutral events. Implicit in their nature are the notions that lives lost at the World Trade Center are more valuable than lives lost in Afghanistan, Iraq, Palestine and elsewhere; that the motives of the 9/11 attackers had nothing to do with genuine grievances in the Islamic world regarding American imperialism; and that the U.S. has been justified in the subsequent killing of hundreds of thousands in so-called retaliation.

The observance at Saturday’s football game was no different. A moment of silence was followed by a military airplane flyover; in between, Block-I students chanted “USA, USA.” This was neither patriotism nor remembrance in any justifiable sense, but politicization, militarism, propaganda and bellicosity. The University is a public institution that encompasses the political views of all, not just the most (falsely) “patriotic.” Athletic planners should cease such exploitation for political purposes. They might at least consider how most Muslim students, American or otherwise, would respond to this nativist display; or better, Muslims and others that live their lives under the threat of our planes, drones and soldiers.

The overwhelmingly white, privileged, Block-I students should be ashamed of their obnoxious, fake-macho, chicken-hawk chant, while poverty-drafted members of their cohort fight and die in illegal and immoral wars for the control of oil. University administrators need to eliminate from all events such “patriotic” observances, which in this country cannot be separated from implicit justifications for state-sponsored killing.

David Green,

University Academic Professional

You can dissect that to your heart’s content, and it is still, on whole, some of the most misguided stupidity you’re likely to see this side of Maine.

Of course 9.11 observances aren’t politically neutral. That neutrality died the day we lost 3,000 people to Islamic jihadist extremists who had been at war with us for years. How did this yahoo get stuck in time on September 10th, 2001 for heaven sake?

That sort of absurdly out-of-touch idiocy permeates the entire little screed. And if you want to see the definition of “non neutrality” at work, read this “academic professional’s” denigration of his student’s nationalism, patriotism and – yes, wait for it – color.

And then there’s the “stereotypes-r-us” portion. “Overwhelmingly white, privileged … students”. Wars fought by “poverty-drafted members of their cohort”. “Illegal” (authorized by Congress per the Constitution) and “immoral” (yeah, can’t hit back when smacked in the face with a sledge hammer – that’s immoral) and all for oil.

All the leftist canards rolled into one can be found in it – yeah, be ashamed of your country, your military, your patriotism and yourselves you bastards because it makes “David Green, academic professional” uneasy.

How freakin’ ‘60s of the dope.

Tell you what, David Green, academic professional – instead of you telling everyone what they’ve done to offend you, why don’t I tell you what about you offends me.

Your very existence offends me. Your smug but ignorant arrogance offends me. The fact that you don’t know the difference between grassroots patriotism and “nativism” offends me. The fact that you have no idea of who makes up our military (although it comes as no surprise, really) offends me. The fact that you clearly don’t know what the words “illegal” or “immoral” mean, but have no problem throwing them around like you do offends me.

But what offends me most is what you must be doing to the young minds which come under your power while attending your university. If what you’ve written is any indication of how you teach, then your students or their parents ought to demand an immediate refund. Because it is not only fact free, but shows absolutely no evidence of critical thinking.

One of the great things about America is everyone is free to express their opinion. However, doing so is not without consequence, because then those who don’t agree get to express theirs. My opinion of you, David Green, academic professional, is below that of the Congressional Democratic leadership. And I provide the bottom side of their 8% popularity rating.

The good news for you is you are precisely where you belong. Outside the academic ivory tower, facing the reality anyone else does, it’s my guess surviving for 15 minutes would be the high side of an estimate of how long you’d last.

Now, crawl back under your academic rock, where you belong, and hush.

  • I stopped considering this clown and those like him to be fellow Americans long ago.

Oooohhh! look kids, the nod to encompassing everyone, all inclusive, hold hands and sing Kum-bye-yay…. except of course those falsely patriotic offense white nativist non Muslim political jingoists from I-Block!!!!!

Equality for me, but not for thee -

    And THIS -
“that the motives of the 9/11 attackers had nothing to do with genuine grievances in the Islamic world regarding American imperialism;”
OIC – their grievances, real or imagined, gave them justification for murdering 3000 people they didn’t know? (or, even 3000 people they DID know, that’s the freaking point isn’t it….there’s no justification either way…)
Is that how you solve your grievances David? If so, you might be interested to know, I have a grievance with your complaint…..

    • that the motives of the 9/11 attackers had nothing to do with genuine grievances in the Islamic world regarding American imperialism

We’ll this will let me sleep at night knowing that those “patriotic displays” on 9/11 probably wouldn’t offend those attackers because American imperialism had nothing to do with.
I wonder how long it will take David Green to utter “Allāhu Akbar” because we certainly know when the Mohamed Atta’s of the world come for him, they certainly won’t give a flying F that he cared about their sensitivities.

  • A pristine piece of Collectivist dogma and doggerel. EXCELLENT! The perfidy and arrogant WRONGNESS of this mook is amazing.
This should be enshrined in the High Hall Of Bullsh!t, right alongside the collected speeches of Barack Hussain Obama.

  • I wouldn’t assume that this guy is a professor. Anyone using the title “Academic Professional” is obviously a wannabee who would call himself a professor if he could. He is probably some mid-level bureaucratic paper pusher.

    • Maybe he could get a rate cut on some “Women Studies” courses. I think it just might round him out a bit.

    • With the proliferation of inflated titles these days, this POS might well be merely sweeping floors in the classrooms. Of course, this puts him just about on par, intellectually, with 90% of the Liberal Arts professors.

  • So David Green, academic professional, had his screed published by the Daily Illini. Why am I not surprised that it originated in Illinois?

  • From the University of Illinois faculty & staff phone directory. I lean toward David L. of Govt & Pub Affs. Sounds strangely “Erbian” in nature.

    • You beat me to it. I thought this guy was for sure a professional graduate student (late 20′s, on his 5 year of a 2 year poli-sci Masters degree). I could not have been more surprised to find he is 59 years old! How can you live so long and stay so clueless? He is the David L. Green who is listed above. He can also be reached at davegreen84@yahoo.com.

    • Sounds like a hippie retread

  • It appears this individual has also written for Counterpunch, the liberal website, about the “Holocaust” industry and how it gives Israel some sort of free pass in the world. What a cretin.

  • As usual, you dense righties are jealous of we wise leftist academics who are really pragmatic moderates, and publish your screeds instead of thinking through the issues. That’s probably because you’re wigged out from the stress of serving in the military, for which there is research that I don’t have to link to explaining the mental problems that are so pervasive in ex-military types.

Why are you so reluctant to ask why the noble brown savage adherents to a religion of peace hate us so much? Don’t you understand about the imperialism that this wise academic references? It’s what caused us to invade Iraq, which was the biggest foreign policy mistake in history and which will become basically a subsidiary of Iran any day now, you just wait. And the fact that such a takeover means we don’t have any influence there doesn’t either contradict my assertion about our imperialism, so stop saying that.

It will happen because we wise social science academics understand that with the noble brown savages, religion trumps everything, and so those Arab Iraqis are just chomping at the bit to turn control of their society over to Persian Iranians, just because they’re both Shiite. See, that’s the kind of tight reasoning that you can only get from wise, post-modern, leftist academics. Once we’ve been briefed by Juan Cole, of course.

Not to mention that the idea that those wogs can ever govern themselves is just silly. Plus the violence is going to increase there soon. And don’t you start up about how I’ve been saying that since the Surge started, three years ago! Just don’t start! It’s going to happen! I have a socially constructed consensus about it, based on my extensive conversations in the faculty lounge and with the two commenters that come to my blog and constantly praise me for being so smart. Don’t start up about the Sadr vs. Maliki thing either, because Sadr definitely won there, and that why he retired to savor his victory. I decree it.

Anyway, where was I? Oh, yes, your hostility to academics, and how it’s because you’re just jealous. Yes, you guys are definitely jealous of those like me, who might not make much money and have to do a lot of paperwork, be we have both the satisfaction of shaping young minds and the peace of knowing that we’re right and you’re wrong. About everything.

Especially these ridiculous, obsolete concepts such as “patriotism” and “honor” and stuff like that. I’m telling you, we have sinned before the world, and we must prostrate ourselves in apology for decades before we can wipe the slate clean, and you’re just making things worse by blathering on about how we have to defend ourselves. At least Obama understands, and has started the necessary process of apologizing to the world for our many misdeeds.

You guys sound like Sarah Palin, who is a vicious, awful person, so corrupt that she got free kitchen redecorations, according to a random leftist that I don’t either have to link to. Just like her, you probably think you can see another country from your backyard. And don’t start up with how she was misquoted and talking about seeing Russia from her state! With those full lips, ample bosom, and naughty librarian glasses, it’s obvious that she would have said something that stupid. Especially since she went to a state college and doesn’t have an impressive advanced degree from an important school you’ve never heard of, like me. And don’t you dare start up with how I teach at exactly such a college, except that ours has more moose herds grazing around the edge, just don’t start!

You sterile, inbred, mindless righties just will never learn to appreciate the post-modern wonder that is modern academia. But it doesn’t matter. We are indoctrinating educating all your kids about our glorious march to leftist utopia. Plus we’re writing important books, like the one I’m working on now – “Righties in the Mist: Studying Ex-Military Basket Cases and Other Conservatives in Their Native Blog Habitats.” Yes, my first book was only a learning experience for me to prepare for a long writing career, and this one will be much more important, and it’s not either being produced by a vanity press that suckers social science academics, so stop saying that.

You dense righties are just so sure you’re right and stuff. Well, you’re not. You think your precious Republicans are going to do so good this fall. Hah! Don’t be surprised if the Republicans have peaked too early and the Democrats do better than expected, as I said over on my blog. And that’s not either facile meaningless blather because I refuse to put any kind of numbers of my prediction. It’s solid analysis {analysis, analysis, analysis} from a professional. Plus, Obama will almost certainly be re-elected as I’ve said many times before.

And if the Republicans win in a blowout or Obama is one-term president, I’ll be back to tell you how I predicted it and expected it all along. Using my godlike powers of post-modern political science to derive a new socially constructed multiple truth, of course.

  • Academic professional is in fact a real job designation, usually applied to researchers, IT people. etc.

    • Why not simply call them researchers, it people, etc. like we do in the real world? Could it be because they think the word ‘academic’ lends them some sort of cachet that distinguishes them from those doing the same job elsewhere?

      • I’m sure cachet has a lot to do with it, but it’s also to distinguish them administratively from hourly workers, who are unionized.

    • My hometown has numerous “Combustible Disposal Engineers” working for the city.
We used to call them “Garbage collectors”.

  • This strikes me as contrived or fabricated. Those commie idiots are not usually so transparent. Recently, they know the reputation of academia, and are generally try to hide it more gracefully. Something of a wolf in sheep’s clothing comes to mind.

    • No, that is only the few who actually have a few brains. Most of them, like this guy, are indeed as dumb as a box of hammers.

Anyone who has spent any time in academia know that it does not take actual intelligence to have an advanced degree in many of the social sciences. It does take some work and study, and the ability to write.

However, if you begin with a natural ability to write, they will soon transform that into the ability to spew gobbeltygook and academic newspeak.

      • I actually met a guy who was working on his PhD in sociology who was extremely cynical in using political correctness to advance his career. He was PhD student at UC Berkeley who came out of Fresno State! He did this by checking “Latino” as his race even though he was white. His research was designed to be anti-business and pro-women, as that is a two-fer slam dunk. IIRC, his dissertation was on poor Indonesian women selling home-made remedies versus large companies entering the same market.

        • I remember in college, getting those cards each year to check off you race, etc. … let’s just say we had a lot of fun with those.

      • I was told a story about a guy at a community college taking some “women studies” courses. He hid in the back of the room as much as he could.

      • Anyone who has spent any time in academia know that it does not take actual intelligence to have an advanced degree in many of the social sciences.

And if someone has not spent time in academia, all they have to do to recognize the truth of this statement is hang around our comment section waiting for our resident imbecilic political science professor to show up.

    • Ever heard the crap from U-Colorado’s Ward Churchill?

  • You should hear this fool in person! He was on Michael Medved’s show this afternoon and was a complete idiot. He couldn’t carry on a discussion without name calling and talking over Medved and callers. It was a classic example of a complete loon.

  • Ah, you’re all missing it.

This guy was pissed because he was suprised by the sound of the jet engines which caused him to spill his carefully concealed libations into his lap.

That and the sight of white chick college coeds jumping up and down caused him to ‘lose focus.’

  • they might at least consider how most Muslim students, American or otherwise

I would hope that the American Muslim students would also be happy to chant “USA USA,” as they are Americans.

  • Very enjoyable, especially Ott Scerb’s response above. Sadly, the views expressed by this particular academic professional are not only all too common on campuses, they are the mainstream perspective and the accepted wisdom of Codeville’s ruling class, to which all “academic professional’s” covet membership more than they do oxygen.

  • It can’t be stated enough. The muslims had a grievence with America, so they blow up buildings and kill 3000 people. Americans have a grievence with muslims who indiscriminately kill innocents and shout chants of USA in response. Amazing that this prof doesn’t just see and react to these as equal , but rather, as unequal responses, and it is the Americans who need to be scolded and taken to task. Putrid thought process.

  • Mike Medved had this jerk on his radio show yesterday. He accused Medved of knowing nothing about the middle east. Butt kicking ensued.
