But there are certain issues that shouldn't be forgotten, and that people need to keep being reminded of. One of these issues is the death sentence for Cory Maye, a man who was woken up oin the middle of the night by police serving a no-knock warrant on his neighbor, a drug dealer. Mr. Maye, unfortunately for one of the police officers, was an armed, law-abiding citizen who, when woken up in the middle of the night by screaming men invading his home without warning, had a handgun readily available and opened fire on the intruders. Let's not forget Mr. Maye. Radley Balko has fresh updates on the Maye Case. You should read them. It's no secret that I spent a decade as a military policeman, and then an additional couple of years in civilian law enforcement and high-risk security. One of the things I carried away from that experience is that an armed citizenry serves two important purposes: a) it is one of the best crime-prevention policies, since criminals who have reason to fear being shot by law-abiding citizens tend to be more circumspect, and b) it serves as a salutary incentive to prevent the police from getting overly arrogant. Both of those things are results that are greatly to be desired. So, let's not forget Mr. Maye. |
