I’m with Fred — and New Media Strategies
Posted by: Jon Henke on Wednesday, June 06, 2007

It's been six months since I last posted here at QandO to announce that I'd taken a position as New Media Advisor to the Senate Republicans. I believe we accomplished a great deal over the past six months and gave the Senate Republicans a solid foundation on which to build their ongoing New Media outreach.

However, a new opportunity has arisen and I simply could not turn it down. I've joined New Media Strategies - an early pioneer in the field of Online Intelligence — as an Online Brand Manager. Among other projects, I will be working with the Fred Thompson campaign.

I do not choose to support Fred Thompson because of the job; I've chosen the job because of Fred Thompson. Some months ago, after reading an excellent John Fund piece on Fred Thompson, I had a conversation with Mike Turk. Following our conversation, he put together a post making The Case for Fred Thompson — it is a compelling case, and one with which I generally agree. I am genuinely excited about a Fred Thompson candidacy.

I'll also be returning to blogging. I chose not to blog while serving in the Senate role, but I've missed it a great deal. I look forward to getting back into the conversation.

In the meantime, I hope you'll take a look at Fred Thompson. He's joined the fight...and so have I.

Welcome back Jon!

Fred’s probably my first choice among Republicans, but I think dark horse Joe Biden is the best of the bunch. He has nowhere to go but up! (and he’s clean)

Ummm...

So...

Think you could land me a job for him in Illinois, Jon? Pretty please?

No, seriously.

Stop laughing, damnit, I’m not joking here...

mw - more recently:
Many on the right remain angry he supported the campaign finance law sponsored by his friend John McCain. "There are problems with people giving politicians large sums of money and then asking them to pass legislation," Mr. Thompson says. Still, he notes he proposed the amendment to raise the $1,000 per person "hard money" federal contribution limit.

Conceding that McCain-Feingold hasn’t worked as intended, and is being riddled with new loopholes, he throws his hands open in exasperation. "I’m not prepared to go there yet, but I wonder if we shouldn’t just take off the limits and have full disclosure with harsh penalties for not reporting everything on the Internet immediately."

Glad to have you back, Jon.

As I said previously, I think Fred is as good as it gets in a major party candidate. Besides being the most convincing limited government advocate among the major candidates, I perceive that Fred has an presence that sets him apart from the others. In fact, the only candidate I think even has a chance to compete with Fred on the GOP side is Rudy, and I’d vastly prefer Fred.

It’s sheer coincidence that Fred and I come from the same small Tennessee town. But it does mean I get to nitpick when major media gets the details on Lawrence County wrong.

Congrats! It’ll be good to read your blog entries again.

Thanks for the links. I read the Fund piece, very interesting. On the Republican side I’ve so far found only Rice and Hagel (neither officially running) really intriguing. But Thompson will join that group, I need to learn more. On the Democratic side Obama still intrigues me, Edwards is interesting, and Gore seems to have grown because of his experience of defeat in 2000. I vote not on party or even policy, but character and trust. In my state I’m a strong supporter of both Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins, two Republicans. So I look forward to your blogs and discussion of Thompson.

Fred Thompson is just another d*mned mainstream, run-of-the-mill Republican. He doesn’t get the issues, and should not be supported by libertarians. So what if he has hollywood connections? That means nothing. Plus, if he supports any kind of restriction on free speech (campaign finance reform) —he should be avoided like the plague.

Vote for Ron Paul in the primary, if only because of his domestic policy. Then, vote for Wayne Root at the LP convention, and in the general election.

The idea of individual freedom is too important to be ignored. Why give America to totalitarianism without even a fight? An election is not a horse race.

Dude, do you just vote Libertarian as a knee-jerk response?

Seriously, Ron Paul comes off as bug-f*ck nuts in the debates. His one-on-one interviews make him look like the creapy old guy down the street who’s house mom won’t let you walk by...

And I firmly believe that Fred Thompson has a far better grasp of the issues than most of the canidates, or at least is willing to give an answer that may be deemed "Less than polite".

And lets be honest here. Politics is a horse race. You wanna bet one the 1,000,000,000,000 to 1 shot, that’s fine, but you’re tossing your money down the drain. Elections in America are - now - about the lesser of two evils. I don’t like that idea any more than the next guy, but be honest...

Principle is a great and lofty thing, but when you know your guy WILL lose, better to pick the option you can at least live with, instead of the one that scares the crap outta you...

Heh, I guess it right too...

Good news.

So far I’ve liked what I’ve heard. Every candidate is going to have some inconsistencies in their voting record and past rhetoric. Better to be honest about it and say, that was then, this is now. Or the interests of who I was representing then are different then the interest of the nation as a whole.

I’ll be very interested when Fred has position papers up on his website.

Don’t bother with Jake Witmer, he’s just a drive by Rob Paul spammer. He has absolutely no idea what this blog is about, nor what neolibertarianism is, as made evident by him asking us to vote for Ron Paul based on his foreign policy alone. Most here are not voting for Ron Paul based on exactly this.

As a "knee-jerk" divided government voter, Thompson has my vote if he gets the nomination. I’ve outlined before my thoughts on why the election of a Republican President in ’08 is the only way to head off a single party Democratic government.

But between now and the nomination, I’ll be supporting Republicans that I feel I can rely on to put us on the road out of Iraq. My first choice is Hagel, who has the best conservative bona fides and will get will get us out of Iraq on principle. My second choice is Romney whose Clinton-esque style can can be relied to govern by polls and will get us out bocause 70% of Americans want us out. I love Ron Paul, but as SJ suggests, he is a wasted vote.

BTW, should your boy get the nomination, you might consider the notion that popularizing the "divided government" meme may be the only way any Republican nominee can climb out of the six foot hole that GWB has dug for the GOP.

Ah yes, the common Libertarianus Puristus; or, "You’re either 100% down wit’ Ayn, 24-7-365, or you’re worthless."

Also the reason the Libertarian Party will never amount to anything, and why they couldn’t sell $2 bills for 50 cents each.

Some feedback for Fred (i.e. hope you have some influence!)

On the war: I hope he expresses outrage at the rules of engagement. Our troops come first!
On the economy: regulation is our number one problem today (i.e. Sarbanes Oxley, etc.)
On immigration: secure the borders then we’ll talk! Action before more laws!
On foreign policy in general: let’s not police the world. Democracy is fine if people are obviously ready for it but let’s not try to social engineer foreign cultures.

If he can stake-out new territory by being critical of (but not bashing) Bush, he’ll be a voice of change instead of an apologist for the status quo.
He’s clearly articulate and he can talk on his feet. We need an intellectual fighter if we want to reverse trends.

Thompson is about as authentic as his red pickup. All pretense, no substance. Good luck selling that brand under the much greater scrutiny that a Presidential campaign entails. I predict he’ll wilt faster than an Easter lilly.

I believe the only tickets that could beat Citizen Hillary would be Thompson-Giuliani or Giuliani-Huckabee. Rudy’s right. We need him to bring the moderate and Independent votes.

I love Fred, but I’m afraid FDT is Bush 2.0, or at least that’s the way the MSM is already headed. Fred needs to put some serious distance between himself and Bush.

Ron Paul needs a seat on a House appropriations committee, pronto. I very much appreciate his presence in this race and at the debates.

(Shocker!! that Wolf did not ask DR. Paul about our nation’s "health care crisis" and that Wolf also thought it best to not ask Paul, a Texan, what he thought about illegal immigration [/sarcasm].)

I like Fred Thompson and really enjoyed his speech at the Republican Party of Virginia Gala this past Saturday evening. I was hoping that he would surprise everyone and announce his intentions that evening. I also think the best ticket for the Republicans would be a Thompson Romney ticket, in any order.

I’ll reply in caps to Scott Jacobs’s criticism of my post, because that’s the consideration someone so unintelligent deserves: Scott:
Dude, do you just vote Libertarian as a knee-jerk response? NO, I VOTE THAT WAY WHEN MY SUSPICIONS ARE CONFIRMED THAT THE ONLY PERSON IN THE RACE WHO THINKS I SHOULD NOT BE TREATED LIKE BARNYARD CHATTEL IS A LIBERTARIAN. BUT I GUESS BARNYARD CHATTEL IS ALL MOST VOTERS —SUCH AS YOURSELF— ASPIRE TO BE.

Seriously, Ron Paul comes off as bug-f*ck nuts in the debates. His one-on-one interviews make him look like the creapy old guy down the street who’s house mom won’t let you walk by... ...AD HOMINEM ATTACKS, WELL IN LINE WITH MY PRIOR ESTIMATE OF YOUR INTELLECT.

And I firmly believe that Fred Thompson has a far better grasp of the issues than most of the canidates, or at least is willing to give an answer that may be deemed "Less than polite". FRED THOMPSON IS A BLITHERING IDIOT COMPARED TO RON PAUL, AND YES, HE IS THUS A BETTER FIT FOR THE BLITHERING IDIOT ELECTORATE. NO ARGUMENT THERE. RON PAUL HAS NO CHANCE IF GOVERNMENT YOUTH PROPAGANDA CAMP GRADUATES SUCH AS YOURSELF ARE THE ONES REQUIRED TO ELECT HIM.

And lets be honest here. Politics is a horse race. TRUE, TO AMERICA-DESTROYING MORONS LIKE YOU, THAT’S EXACTLY WHAT IT IS. I FURTHER ADMIT THAT YOUR NUMBERS APPEAR TO BE STAGGERING. You wanna bet one the 1,000,000,000,000 to 1 shot, that’s fine, but you’re tossing your money down the drain. NO, I’M TRYING TO PREVENT THE MARGINALLY INTELLIGENT THUG YOU WANT TO ELECT FROM TOSSING IT DOWN THE DRAIN. MY ACTIONS WOULD ACTUALLY BE A DOOMED ATTEMPT TO HOLD ONTO MY MONEY. Elections in America are - now - about the lesser of two evils. BECAUSE OF SHEEPLE LIKE YOU. I don’t like that idea any more than the next guy, but be honest... YOU ALSO DON’T UNDERSTAND ANY IDEA BETTER THAN THE NEXT GUY, SO WHY BOTHER WEIGHING IN?

Principle is a great and lofty thing, but when you know your guy WILL lose, better to pick the option you can at least live with, UNTIL THE GAS CHAMBERS, AND THEN ADMIT YOU WERE WRONG, AS THEY’RE SLAMMING THE DOOR ON YOUR TINY LITTLE EXISTENCE. instead of the one that scares the crap outta you... I’M NOT SCARED, SPEAK FOR YOURSELF.

AND NOW FOR MORON NUMBER TWO, SOMEONE WHO CALLS HIMSELF "CHRISB". ALSO GETTIG ALL CAPS, FOR EASE OF READING, AND DUE LACK OF RESPECT. ChrisB:
Don’t bother with Jake Witmer, he’s just a drive by Rob Paul spammer. THAT WOULD BE "RON PAUL" (THE ONLY TRUE REPUBLICAN AMIDST A BUNCH OF WORTHLESS THUGS) BUT DON’T BOTHER GETTING ANYTHING CORRECT.

He has absolutely no idea what this blog is about, nor what neolibertarianism is, as made evident by him asking us to vote for Ron Paul based on his foreign policy alone. HOW DUMB CAN SOMEONE POSSIBLY BE? I SUGGESTED THAT PEOPLE ON THIS BLOG VOTE FOR RON PAUL BASED ON HIS ___DOMESTIC___ POLICY ALONE. NOT FOREIGN, ___DOMESTIC__. READ IT AGAIN, BOZO. BTW, I’M GOOD FRIENDS WITH THE NEOLIBERTARIAN GUY WHO GOT RON PAUL ELECTED, EVEN THOUGH HE DISAGREES WITH PAUL ON FOREIGN POLICY. I HAVE A FEW MISGIVINGS EITHER WAY THAT ARE TOO COMPLEX TO ANALYZE ON THIS BOARD. Most here are not voting for Ron Paul based on exactly this. YOUR MAMA MUST BE PROUD. READ MY POST AGAIN.

REPLIED TO, IN FULL, BY JAKE WITMER.

I said this in my initial post, but the "neolibertarians" who replied to my post seem to not understand ENGLISH, so I’ll say it again, this time in all-caps, and in a more complete and multiply-redundant way: "RON PAUL IS, FAR AND AWAY, WELL WORTH VOTING FOR BASED ON HIS DOMESTIC POLICY TRACK RECORD ALONE. I DO NOT ADVOCATE VOTING FOR ANY PARTY OR GROUP BASED ON THEIR NAME. EVEN SO, THE TRACK RECORD OF RON PAUL ON TAXATION IS STELLAR. HE IS THE ONLY CANDIDATE WHO UNDERSTANDS DOMESTIC ISSUES IN THE SLIGHTEST. IF YOU KEEP VOTING FOR DEMOCRATIC SOCIALISTS AND "PUBLIC SAFETY" SPECIAL INTEREST PROSTITUTES WHO CALL THEMSELVES "REPUBLICANS", THEN YOU ARE GOING TO GET RINO-FLAVORED SOCIALISM. I DON’T WANT SOCIALISM, AND THUSLY, I WILL VOTE FOR ITS POLAR OPPOSITE, RON PAUL, ANOTHER libertarian, OR neolibertarian, OR I WILL STAY HOME ON ELECTION DAY, IF THERE IS NO CANDIDATE WHO DOES NOT REPRESENT UNBRIDLED STATUS-QUO SOCIALISM, (AND MAKE A HEALTHY CONTRIBUTION TO THE FULLY-INFORMED JURY ASSOCIATION, AND GUNOWNERS OF AMERICA)."
http://www.fija.org
http://www.gunowners.org

SO MUCH FOR "NEOLIBERTARIANS". PATHETIC. MIGHT AS WELL JUST CALL THEMSELVES CONFUSED-LIBERTARIANS.

BRUCE COHEN, AND ERIC DONDERO, ARE THESE PEOPLE YOUR IDEOLOGICAL PEERS? IF SO, YOUR MOVEMENT IS DOOMED. BETTER TELL THEM TO "SHUT UP AND WAIT FOR THE BOSS TO HANDLE THIS ONE" WHEN I’M ON THIS BOARD.
