Life lesson: If you just want to take it easy, don't join the freakin' army....
A U.S. soldier who is absent without leave is seeking refuge status in Canada as a conscientious objector.
...
Hinzman told the Fayetteville Observer in a phone interview that he had "a romantic vision" of the army when he joined three years ago.
He said the socialist structure of army life, complete with subsidized housing, groceries and money for education, appealed to him.
But he became disillusioned and horrified at the start of basic training by chanting about killing during marches, shooting at targets without faces and the dehumanization of the enemy. So, of course, he fled to Canada. "Something for nothing! It's Canada!"
.....it's also a lot like the first few years of your life. But I'm not trying to cast any aspersions on the big baby or anything.
Love the army response....
But she said the army won't search him out.
"We don't have time to go and track down people who go AWOL," she said. "We're fighting a war." Translation: "You won't fight for your freedom, and you just want to be coddled. Canada seems like a perfect place for you. Stay there. You're not worth our time."
