Knocked down for a day
Posted by Jon Henke
It's been a Bad Day in Iraq...
Suspected insurgents killed at least 143 people Tuesday in well-organized, simultaneous attacks in Baghdad and the holy city of Karbala on the holiest Shiite Muslim day of the year, U.S.-led coalition officials said. This is one of those proverbial "separate the men from the boys" days. Days like this will determine whether Iraq can set sail under their own power, or if they will simply return to tyranny when the US leaves.
Insurgents - people who wish for the return of an authoritarian regime - strike Iraqi people. They don't strike the US; they fight directly with the Iraqi people on their holiest day. This is as clear as it's going to get.
* Boys will complain that the US hasn't made things safe enough, and demand security from anybody who will provide it.
* Men will fight for their new-found freedom. And they'll fight the people who want to take it away, not the people who are trying - even inadequately - to secure it for them.
For the Iraqi people, it doesn't get any more important than this. Either they want freedom, or you want security. They may not know it yet, but if they sacrifice the former, they'll never have the latter.
