Separate and unequal
Posted by Jon Henke

I don't often write in such dramatic terms, but this law demands it. This is nothing less than the return of Jim Crow....

House Bill 751 amended Virginia's Affirmation of Marriage Act to ban civil unions and other partnership contracts "purporting to bestow the privileges and obligations of marriage."

The state's gays and lesbians fear it will interfere with legal contracts--such as powers of attorney, wills and medical directives--between people of the same sex.
In short, in their haste to cut off the prospect of gay marriage at the pass, the Virginia legislature has rescinded the basic human right of voluntary contractual relationships.

There is no excuse for this. I'm not generally a one-issue voter, but I'll very likely be voting against any of my legislators who voted for this vicious throwback to the 19th century.
