He tried a referendum to repeal presidential term-limits, but that was voted down. Now he's gotten his rubber-stamp legislature to pass a constitutional amendment to end term-limits:The amendment, which applies to all elected officials, must be approved by a referendum within 30 days, a vote correspondents say is set to be close.
Mr Chavez urged a change in the law in his annual address on Tuesday.
He said it would be dangerous to remove a captain from his ship halfway through the voyage. Unless he's the captain of the Titanic. And that analogy holds very well for El Loco. Anyway, by law there will be another referendum within 30 days and it looks very close.
In other Hugo news, apparently low oil prices have our socialist "we don't need no stinkin' capitalism" hero "quietly courting Western oil companies once again" as the NYT says. Don't tell anyone. We wouldn't want to ruin his image. However why any foreign oil company would trust this yahoo against is beyond me. Ed Morrisey has more.
Last but not least, Hugo kicked the Israeli ambassador out last week in solidarity with - Hamas I guess.
