Not the "Iranian Unit"!? Tell me it ain’t so!
Posted by: McQ on Friday, January 16, 2009

Even terrorists have their "elite units". In this case, Hamas's best turned out to be less than advertised.
The so-called "Iranian Unit" of Hamas has been destroyed, according to Gaza sources cited Thursday by the Haaretz daily. The sources said most of the unit's 100 members were killed in fighting in the Zeytun neighborhood of Gaza City.

The terrorists had been trained in infantry tactics, the use of anti-tank missiles and the detonation of explosives, among other skills, by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard at Hizbullah camps in Lebanon's Beka'a Valley, as well as sites in Iran.
Apparently the Israeli response caught these so-called fighters off-guard and unprepared. They became cannon fodder for the IDF.

It's called underestimating your enemy and not being prepared for the fight. A rookie mistake for a supposed hard-core militant organization. Said one of the captured Hamas terrorists:
"Hamas took a gamble. We thought, at worst Israel will come and do something from the air - something superficial. They'll come in and go out. We never thought that we would reach the point where fear will swallow the heart and the feet will want to flee. You [Israel] are fighting like you fought in '48. What got into you all of a sudden?"
Most people characterize when "fear will swallow the heart and the feet will want to flee" as cowardice, and "fighters" that use women and children as shields are already proven cowards. So it comes as no surprise, at least to me, that after all their aggressive talk and promises they ended up fleeing the battle:
"Some Hamas companies and battalions were simply wiped out. We also see cases of desertions and unauthorized leaves, while some terror activists are scared to undertake moves that would jeopardize them vis-à-vis IDF troops."
I'm not sure why Hamas figured the Israeli response to continuous rocket attacks would be some slap-dash, hit and run operation, but obviously they did.

As for the Israelis, well, they're just taking their time and doing it right this time. My guess is, when the cease-fire does come (and this time Hamas is the one that wants it as quickly as possible) it will be after Israel is pretty satisfied with what it accomplished.

And Hamas will be left exactly as they deserve - a bunch of incompetent and decimated cowards who are essentially powerless and had to capitulate to their enemies. And their proxy, Iran, won't be looking so great either.

Where I come from, we call wanting to run the hell away from an IDF intent on killing you as a very, very smart move... :)

McQ, I think this is what they refer to as "a legend in your own mind" and "believing your own propaganda".

Well, here’s hoping they are decimated seven times over.

Let’s remember, Israel can’t defeat Hamas this way.

Is there a lesson to be learned here? Hasn’t everyone been telling us that the "war on terror" just inflames passions and creates more terrorists? Well, keep inflaming them and they might just run away.

Define success here...
Do the rockets stop?
I hope so, but history says, "turn the page".

Greybeard — Yeah, I think Israel can and has put a pretty good dent in Hamas in Gaza, but as long as Hamas has as much direct and indirect support as it does from the outside, Israel can only buy time and hope for the best.

Israel may have hurt Hamas enough for Hamas to stop firing rockets for a period, possibly for years, but long-term is another question.

When the Muslims have lost their edge in oil and angry young men, then their jihad lust will go dormant again, and Israel can have the peace it richly deserves.

But there is a lot of risk and horror between now and then.

When the Muslims have lost their edge in oil and angry young men,
Yeah, young men.

The danger of the young bulge, too much money, and a media run by people who give these characters license and excuse to feed their frustration because of their bs ideology.
