Imagine ...
Posted by: McQ on Monday, January 19, 2009

Back when I was a kid (yeah, we actually did have radios and TVs and good rock bands back then), there was a John Lennon song that went like this:
Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace...

[...]

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world...
Of course that which was being "imagined" was failing in its promise in the USSR and communist China. Religion was banned. Property was declared obsolete. Greed was outlawed and because of all of those "advances", hunger was something the blessed would never suffer again.

[As an aside, I always thought Lennon, even though spelled differently, was a perfect last name for John]

The song ends with:
You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will live as one
Even in the utopian '60s the rational among us knew this was nothing more than unicorn and moonbeam fantasy. The reality those sorts of policies turned out to be a grim totalitarian nightmare in which the state decided what you would do, think, eat, wear and how you would live.

As these states collapsed (as did the USSR) or changed (as has China) or just descended into poverty due to the state's incompetence (like Cuba and many Eastern European satellites did), most of us said, "we told you so" and moved on.

But there is now a new generation which again has those utopian dreams and fantasies bubbling up in their fertile minds and are sure that this time, that fantasy can be made to succeed.
Imagine a place where doctors still do house calls. Or where child care is affordable, professional and widely available. Or where all new parents are paid to stay home and care for their newborns and they receive a monthly stipend to pay for diapers, food and other daily needs.

Or imagine a place where a young person doesn't have to mortgage her or his future by going in debt to pay for a college education. Or where everyone has quality, affordable health care, and all workers receive two months' worth of paid vacation and holidays every year, and paid sick leave too, as well as a generous retirement.
Imagine.

But don't imagine where the resources for all of this "free" stuff has to come. And don't imagine the amount of control the government has to exert to make all this wonderful stuff happen.

Because if you did, then you could begin to imagine how much freedom and liberty your utopia would cost you and everyone else. And that's no fun. Only rational adults do that sort of thinking.

Instead, buy into the dream and ignore the cost. Hope. Change. Yes, we can!

When you only do that sort of imagining, anything is possible - to include totalitarianism.

The backlash when reality bitch-slaps these idiots in a few years will almost make the hell they will put us through worth it.

Actually Lennon was not arguing for Soviet style bureaucratic socialism, that’s quite distant from his ideas. And, while we’re still probably centuries away from putting aside the barbarism and evil of communism, militarism, exploitation and the like, one bit of good news: the old regime is passing — not just Bush, but US regime of 1945 - 2008. This is VERY good news!

And there was no claim that he was. Thanks for stopping by and changing the original point to suit your personal needs, though. Idiot.

Planning on doing some genetic engineering Herr Professor?
Because that’s the only way you’ll change the species to achieve your ’dream’.

You have a crappy grasp of history, and you have a crappy grasp of human nature.

I can only presume for all your vaunted accomplishments on your resume of life you haven’t been in the real world very often.

No, but that is what you end up with, which is the point of the article, which you obviously missed. As usual.

Picking the wrong mushrooms again, eh?

When he was in the real world, as a manager of a pizza place, he stole pizzas and then bragged about it online. That’s Erb’s experience.

Imagine this ...
An American education professor, one of the founders of a radical 1960s group known as the Weather Underground, which was responsible for a number of bombings in the United States in the early 1970s, was turned back at the Canadian border last night.

Dr. William Ayers, a professor of education at the University of Illinois-Chicago and a leader in educational reform, was scheduled to speak at the Centre for Urban Schooling at University of Toronto’s Ontario Institute for Studies in Education. But that appearance has now been temporarily cancelled.

It’s good news that the "regime" that protected the world, beat back all sorts of evil and liberated millions of people (not to mention all the humanitarian aid) is "passing"?

?????

What an evil man you are.

Oh, what was that you said about Hamas never being defeated?

Jeez, how g*dd*mn dense can you be? Chris Dodd and company were not arguing for a financial meltdown either, but that’s what we got as a result of their ideas and the policies that came out of them.

Cause and effect, you idiot. You should look into it.

We won’t even dwell on the fact that the regime he glories the passage of is the very regime under who’s protection he grew up, got his education and raised his family.

Last week I agreed to the suggestion we chip in to buy him a poster, this week I’d like to suggest we chip in to buy him a one way ticket to a worker’s paradise, like Cuba or Venezuela.

I have spent many hours in the past trying to use logic with such dreamers. I gave up, concluding only a hard, personal bit of reality would change them. I have seen some of them change after life’s truths hit them, but I suspect many and, know some I conversed with, were propped up by family money so change was not necessary nor forced on them any more than it was with Bill Ayers.

You should watch Evan Sayat’s How Modern Liberals Think .

In the first 10 minutes he explains what John Lennon was talking about and it was the destruction of reason, morality, knowledge and good. His world, and yours too, is so biased against morality, reason and knowledge. BTW, I remember when Lennon was alive. Do you?

Shark, do you think Hamas has been defeated? Really? (eyes rolling) Here is what I said about Hamas.
It won’t work. First of all, the emotion caused on each side by the violence will only embolden the extremists, and Hamas is adept at adapting and surviving. They’ll lose hundreds, maybe thousands of fighters, but the pool of willing and angry young Palestinians will grow, and anger will increase in the West Bank as well. Palestinians can count. They know that the Israeli military is killing far more innocents than Hamas kills, and even if Palestinians don’t like Hamas, their rage will directed at Israel.
As I noted, one way out of this is to internationalize the conflict. I hope that happens.

And Arch, biased against reason, morality and the like? That’s a silly caricature, I can point to a lot of silly caricatures of conservative thought too. The left caricatures the right, the right caricatures the left and each side believes the other is really like the caricature it puts forth. But that’s just silly. I think most people left and right are moral, use reason, and actually are well intentioned. They just like to believe the other side isn’t, and use caricatures and ridicule of the other side as a way to avoid self-critique. (And yes, I remember when Lennon was alive).

Very Impressive Dr Erb...so the world of Bretton Woods, GATT, the UN, NATO, WHO, and the like all passing away, assuming that IS passing away, is good? Don’t try to whip out any counter-factual history...the options are the "West" or the Soviets...and so you are pleased that the system that produced the West is passing? Speaks volumes....

Erb-

The local version of you, Ott Scerb, frequently proclaims "I declare it to be so".
You linking to your own analysis of these topics is indicative he is not exaggerating your feelings about your own work.

The ’angry young Palistinians’ clearly understood to contest with the IDF meant sudden death. They didn’t rally in huge numbers to die and defend sacred Gaza even though by all rights they should expect their 72 virgins upon shuffling off this mortal coil.
Why do you suppose that is?

This was an embarrassment to Hamas. They showed the Gaza Palestinians a multitude of things:
1) Firing rockets into Israel makes the Israelis really mad (after a while).
2) Israel can and will destroy their hard won infrastructure in a heartbeat.
3) Hamas cannot defend them.
4) Hamas will put civilian lives at risk.
5) Hamas will squander resources pointlessly.
6) Israel can and will come into Gaza to kill them at will.
7) Israel is not playing dead and will not be easily destroyed.
8) Israel is not worried about world opinion.
9) Israel can annihilate their ’best’ units.
10) Israel won’t shoot up Gaza & Palestinians in general without provocation.

Funny thing is these were lessons they already might have learned, but like you they appear to want to stick to their shtick.
I’m not surprised that the guy who sees a withdrawal from Iraq in 2011 as a face saving withdrawal would see Hamas as the victor here. Pity the Israelis don’t have anyone as smart as you isn’t it?

Logically, what are the odds of THAT being the case professor?

Erb, I like you remember lennon, and I,apparently unlike you, remember the last time US hegemony was passing...funny thing that it was followed by the End of the Soviet Union, and the "Unipolar Moment."

But you keep re-reading the Club of Rome and the EU Constitution and telling yourself, "There’s no place like home, there’s no place like home."

What john lennon was proposing in this song seems absolutley ludicrous. it seems a dream world, but i also remeber throughout the majority of history men were ruled by tyrants and kings. were not locke, hobbes, sidney, trenchard and gordons ideas also dreams. to imagine a world were their are no kings where all men have a voice and their life is not dependent on the whim of some tyrant. a world where even the heads of states are under the law. was a america not the dream of great men. a land mixed with all sorts of races and nation in which all rich or poor are excepted, where ANY child can get a free education(Kindergarden thru 12th.) that would seem like a ludicrous dream to any in the past, but none the less its true. lets us thank God for those men who dreamed of a better world then the ones they lived in and did something to change their world instead of thowing their hands up and saying well this is as good as it gets, no point in dreaming.

Erb, you caricature yourself. If you would step away from your unjustified self-esteem for a half a minute, you’d see it. That you lack the emotional and intellectual maturity to do so speaks volumes about yourself, your employer, and the academy at large.

Or where child care is affordable, professional and widely available.

What professional is going to work for "affordable" rates? And so many of them that it’s "widely" available?

What gets people to do a job is reward; this need not be strictly money, but there aren’t enough people Deeply Devoted To Child Care Provision to do it professionally and "widely" without vastly increased remuneration.

Problem is, then it’s not "affordable".

Some people need to figure out that just because you want a state of affairs does not mean it is possible.

Actually Lennon was not arguing for Soviet style bureaucratic socialism, that’s quite distant from his ideas. Lennon was simply arguing for wise leftists with godlike powers of political science to run society, because he knew we would create a utopia. But you know how it is - sometimes you get something wrong a few times before you get it right. It’s like playing a piano piece. Give we wise leftists a few more chances and utopia will be at hand. I’m telling you, leftist economics has only failed because of the misguided people making the decisions so far. It will work, and John Lennon’s vision can come true, if only the right people are running things.

And, while we’re still probably centuries away from putting aside the barbarism and evil of communism, militarism, exploitation and the like, mostly because of the resistance of mean and thick righties, one bit of good news: the old regime is passing — not just Bush, but US regime of 1945 - 2008. This is VERY good news! Yes, the vicious, immoral regime that has been committing imperialism for over sixty years is over! Now, why it wasn’t over when Carter was elected and had Democratic majorities is a complex, political sciency thing that you dense righties would never understand, but trust me, Carter was a part of that vicious regime even though he’s smart and wise and moral and one of the greatest Americans who ever lived. I decree it.

And why it’s a good thing that every tinpot dictator will be able to throw his weight around any way he likes without worrying about what we will do is also something I don’t expect dense righties to understand, but you’ll just have to trust we wise leftists on this.

Yes, I’m so happy that our military power will never, ever be used again in any large scale way. Now we can begin our decades of necessary self-effacement. We’ll have no choice, really, because we won’t be able to use our military when we are threatened; we’ll have to give in to those who we have victimized in the past and who now threaten us. That a good thing! Really! I decree it. And you dense righties will just have to suck on it, because you can’t depend on your precious military any more for protection. We leftists are going to make America join with wise leftists from all over the world to create a beatiful, magical world. It will be wonderful and magical, and all conflicts will be resolved with magical, life-fulfilling negotiation, except when it is required for the US to bow down and pay penance for our imperialist sins. You’ll see.

And you dense righties who think Hamas has been defeated! Hah! The emotion on each side will embolden the terrorists. OF course, pretty much anything that happens emboldens the terrorists, but still. Hamas is adept at adapting and surviving, at least the ones who are still alive. Maybe they’ll even find a way to make their dead ones adapt with some zombie-like thing, I don’t know, but those noble savage brown people just have a depth of soul and spirituality that we in the West lack, and that allows them to always persevere in their righteous struggle against the West. Just like those fighters in Iraq that I predicted would win, and they’re going to come back any time now you just wait. As I told you, Sadr really won over Maliki, and the Iranians are going to just dominate everything, because those Iraqi wogs don’t care about freedom and they will just hand over their whole lives to the Iranians. You’ll see.

And Arch, I think most people left and right are moral, use reason, and actually are well intentioned. Of course, those on the right are no good at using reason because they’re so dense, and I’m not really that sure that their intentions are good if they’ve ever been paid killers in the military because they’re probably basket cases now, but I usually give them credit for trying. They just like to believe the other side isn’t, and use caricatures and ridicule of the other side as a way to avoid self-critique. And the caricatures of me as being obsessive and needing to come here to validate my own self-worth are not true, darn it! I’m just a good, altruistic person doing research for my book "Why is War Easy: Because Dense Righties Like It". In it, I will explain why the 1945-2008 American regime is over and how that’s just wonderful and dense righties will never be able to persecute noble savage brown people ever again.

Come over to my blog, which I am most definitely not pimping for, and you’ll be able to see more. What do you mean, you’d rather have your eyes washed with lye soap? I only write noble and wise things, and I’m so smart and clear in my writing that even dense righties ought to be able to understand and benefit from it. It’s true! I decree it.

Well, one must admit that repeating propaganda points over and over again, as Erb does, made all the difference for the Democrats in 2006 and 2008.

I didn’t think it would work, but when you add the media, Hollywood, academics, and the Democratic Party together, that’s a pretty loud megaphone for their narrative.

Thanks to Obama, the Democratic Party, the MSM and hacks like Prof. Erb, I still talk to people who don’t know that the Iraq War is basically over and we won.

Really, Bithead, you recall that? You are, then, well over 80 years old, right? Unfortunately for you, the history books don’t recall that kind of argument. You’re just making this up, right?

Of course Huxley trying to claim we won the Iraq war is hilarious. Alas, in my courses this semester, I won’t be teaching that same line. If you want to convince me to change my approach, please make an argument. But I determine to focus on truth, not propaganda, and claims we won the war in Iraq seems like Baghdad Bob like silliness.

One ammendum: I will admit that in April 2003 we won the military war in Iraq, I said so in my blog. But since then we’ve been forced to totally redefine our goals and now are leaving with Iran emboldened, no stable democracy, and, well, essentially with our tail between our legs.
