Crossing the line against Ward Churchill
Posted by: McQ on Friday, February 04, 2005

Its one thing to disagree with someone, to speak against his ideas and his actions. Its a cherished right among Americans and it works both ways.

But there is a very bright line which must not and should not be crossed. And that line is being crossed in the case of embattled CU professor Ward Churchill.

This blog has certainly not been kind to either Churchill's ideas or activites, but, and I think I can safely speak for all of us, this is flat wrong and unacceptable:
Vandals painted two swastikas on the truck of besieged University of Colorado professor Ward Churchill, Boulder County sheriff's deputies said Wednesday.

[...]

Also Wednesday, Churchill turned over to deputies copies of "hate mail" he said he had received. Churchill told the deputies he already had provided the hate mail to the CU campus police, West said.

Churchill has said he has been the recipient of numerous death threats since an uproar erupted over his essay about the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Churchill's scheduled appearance today on a panel at Hamilton College in Clinton, N.Y., was canceled because of security concerns.
To all you moonbats out there committing these immature and egregious acts you are as bad, if not worse, than that you claim to detest.

You certainly don't represent me. What you represent is the worst of both sides ... the coercive fringe, the violent extreme; elements of fanaticism that shouldn't be welcomed or tolerated by either the left or the right.

You need to grow up and realize that dissent is fine, in fact its important, but when it crosses the line to activites which violate the rights of others, it is totally unacceptable, regardless of how odious and detestable you consider the target of your hate.

UPDATE: Speaking of crossing the line, it appears that the same sort of unacceptable nonsense is evident in Washington state as well:
The Washington State Patrol is keeping close watch over both Gov. Christine Gregoire and her Republican rival, Dino Rossi, after Gregoire received a death threat and emotions over the contested election continue to run high.

Gregoire told reporters today she received a death threat and that she plans to keep a lid on publicizing her movements outside the heavily guarded Capitol and Governor's Mansion.

Exactly, 100% agreement here

...well, except from the track record I've seen of high-profile lefties getting hate mail, it's usually self-inflicted.
That being said, if it was any of Dr. Churchill's detractors doing that, it is entirely unacceptable and not to be tolerated.

Nathan ... if its self-inflicted, that'll come out eventually.

I pretty much agree with you on this one, but I think there are other issues that are a little stickier here which are inflaming people.

The reason people are calling for his resignation, whether they admit it or not, is that they are sick and scared of how the leftists have taken over various departments in colleges and used as centers for indoctrination. Freedom of speech is good but this indoctrination scares people and this is the reason this has become a touchstone.

I agree with you that we must not let politics limit academia, but the problem is that it already is limiting it. Churchill was the deparment chair and I'd be willing to bet significant sums that department marches pretty much in lock-step with his ideology and that dissenters are not very likely to get into that crowd.

I understand that this is different and I don't think it justifies his firing but I think it is the animus behind alot of this ire.

I have another post above which addresses your points more specifically, but in general, I'm of the opinion that an employer has the right to fire anyone he or she wants, however that doesn't mean I agree with the grounds.

Here I see no problem with firing Churchill if there are real grounds to do so, such as he's a lousy professor and has violated his tenure agreement.

What I've been objecting to is the intitial reason the school gave, that he may have overstepped the boundaries of academic freedom. Poppycock.

And in this particlar post I'm more interested in pointing out that the moonbats who are painting up his truck and issuing death threats are seriously warped and their behavior is unacceptable.

I agree that the death threats and swastikas are beyond the pale. I probably shouldn't have said what I did...but some days I'm more cynical than other days, I guess.

There are few if any examples of campus "hate crimes" that weren't put-up jobs by the alleged victim.

Color me very skeptical that Churchill has received legitimate threats.

I also wouldn't put making fake death threats to gin up sympathy for Gregoire and discredit Rossi beyond the same Dem operatives who defrauded the Washington election in the first place.

Like I said to Nathan, if so, it will most likely come out ... but I understand your skepticism. Part of the cult of the victim.

But if true, then, as stated, its unacceptable.

I'm with the other guy. No one cares enough about this backwoods loser to want to actually hunt him down and either follow him to find his car or look up his motor vehicle registration. And, is it just a big coincidence that a lunatic who is obsessed with the thought that his intellectual detractors are "little Nazis" suddenly finds his car vandalized with...SWASTIKAS?!

Seriously, swastikas?!

Those damn Republicans! Always painting swastikas on things whenever they get angry! Or, maybe it was Colorado's GIANT neo-Nazi community, which understandably became enraged by his academic journal writings and decided to show him just how powerful the Nazi Party still is...

Come on, this guy is a joke, don't get all weepy about how we shouldn't force him to vandalize his own junk. $100 says that the Boulder Sherrif is looking right now at filing charges against this mook.
