US border insecure, US President unconcerned
Posted by: Jon Henke on Thursday, March 24, 2005

The Department of Homeland Security concedes that intelligence reports indicate Al Qaeda is considering infiltration of the US via Mexico.  On top of that, there is the ongoing uncontrolled immigration, in violation of US law.  So, a group of citizens announces their intention to "identify and follow illegal border crossers and alert federal agents", in order to help agents enforce the law in a particularly pourous area of the Arizona/Mexico border.  And our purported "ally" Mexico thumbs their nose at us.

When we build walls to defend our borders, Vicente Fox says "no country that is proud of itself should build walls".   When citizens organize a neighborhood watch to assist the border Patrol, Vicente Fox calls them "migrant-hunting groups" and says Mexico will "use the law, international law and even U.S. law to make sure these types of groups ... will not have any opportunity to progress."   His interest in the sanctity of "U.S. law", however, does not appear to extend to US border law.

Wesley Pruden writes...

Americans shouldn't worry about terrorists slipping into the United States because [says Vicente Fox] "we have absolutely no evidence of that." American authorities do, but that's a risk Mr. Fox is willing to take on our behalf.

A responsible border policy—and a responsible President—would 1) treat this as the National Security issue that it is, and 2) treat Mexico as the complicit enemy that they have decided to be.  But not President Bush.   He's taken his side, and his side is with Mexico...

President Bush yesterday said he opposes a civilian project to monitor illegal aliens crossing the border, characterizing them as "vigilantes."  He said he would pressure Congress to further loosen immigration law.

[...]

Mr. Bush was criticized by both Republicans and Democrats earlier this month for failing to add 2,000 agents to the Border Patrol, as set out in the intelligence overhaul legislation he signed in December. The president's 2006 budget allows enough money to add only 210 agents for the U.S. borders with Canada and Mexico.

What do you think it will take for politicians to get as serious about border security as they got about airline security right after we were attacked by terrorists on 9/11?

Or did I just answer my question?

UPDATE:  Michelle Malkin has more, including specifics about just how irresponsible Bush has been.  I'll venture to say that, if we are attacked by terrorists who slipped in over the Mexico/US border, there will be calls for Bush's impeachment.  From Republicans.

Via Malkin, I see more from La Shawn Barber...

"Shame on you, Mr. Bush. Mexico’s president Vicente Fox probably stood there smiling, pleased that his American pal is trained so well."

 ...and Polipundit...

This from a president whose administration refuses to fund the Border Patrol. This from a president whose Department of “Homeland Security” actively refuses to enforce immigration laws. This from a president who has proposed a massive amnesty for the millions of illegal aliens who’ve broken our immigration laws. This from a president who has allowed illegal immigration to increase after the September 11, 2001, attacks.
I fear it will only be in retrospect that we recognize the criminal irresponsibility of our current border policy.

The GOP is determined to start losing elections again, aren’t they?

I am a Bush supporter. I don’t agree with every one of his policies but I can usually see where he’s coming from. On this matter though...i just don’t get it. He seems to be hand delivering the Democrats fodder for the next election.

No Shark.  The GOP is determined to serve the elite monied interests that run the party.  Illegal immigration benefits these interests by providing cheap labor and holding down wages.  Why should the GOP elites care?  There aint no illegal immigrants competing for their jobs.

Plus, the GOP knows that the anti-illegal immigrant types are not going to vote Democratic, so the GOP has nothing to lose by not dealing with the border problem.  Do you really think Michelle Malkin is going to vote for Hillary Clinton?

And God forbid some terrorist should slip across the border, do you think for one minute Bush or the GOP would take any responsibility?  Undoubtedly, they would find some way to blame it on some kind of Dem policy position and they would go on to label as traitorous anyone who dared to question whether they were responsbile.

The border problem is not a political problem for the GOP.  It is a national security and economic problem for America.  But we have long since passed the point where the political interests of the GOP and the economic and national secuity interests of the average American share anything in common.

"What do you think it will take for politicians to get as serious about border security...?"

Simple: Get defeated by another politician who uses border security as a campaign issue.  That’s the only thing that will convince them.

An additional intriguing take on this issue from <a href="http://pundita.blogspot.com/2005/03/why-vicente-fox-is-going-straight-to.html">Pundita</a>.

so the GOP has nothing to lose by not dealing with the border problem
Only 30% of the voting public identifies itself as republican. There are a lot of people who don’t blindly vote for them. And even republicans can choose not to vote. Maybe Bush is giving his successor a way to move right and not look like a Bush clone, but he seems to be toying with our security in the meantime. Does Bush give a reason for his contrary views on the border (other than mk’s line-the-pockets-of-the-rich conspiracy)?

I would only point out that if every square inch of land in this country were privately owned, none of this would be a problem.

Yeah ... but it isn’t, and that’s why we’re commenting on it.

I sure hope we don’t get as serious over illegal immigration as we have over transportation security. Norm Mineta for border management anyone?"

Travel would suck.

And the sad thing is the Dems, beholden as much as they are to the Hispanic vote, are unlikely to have done any better. Though it’s getting hard to see how they could’ve done any worse.

I was born in Mexico but raised in the US ever since I was 3 and I am now currently 19.I am also married to a US citizen and and have a baby who was born in the US as well. One day I decided to visit my home country and on the way back to the states I was practically harrased by the US customs at the border and they told me to go back to my home country.I am now currently living in Mexico withought my daughter or any family whatsoever.I was told I will never be able to return to the US because I once claimed to be a US citizen.I havnt committed any crimes, all I want is to see my family once again.I just hope the goverment will change their laws which I think are way too harsh.
