So much for "Comity"
Posted by: Dale Franks on Thursday, May 26, 2005

It only took 72 hours for the Senate's newfound comity and bipartisanship to break down, resulting in a filibuster on the nomination of John Bolton to the UN as ambassador.

Democrats say that they aren't filibustering. They just are voting against cloture, which is, like, totally different. Besides, the deal was on judicial nominees, anyway, so go suck it.

So, the UN will remain without a UN ambassador until at least early June.

The reason for the vote, according to Democrats, is that the Administration—specifically the State Department, won't run over some documents that they vitally need to ensure his qualifications for the job. The papers in question, however, are highly classified documents that detail intelligence sources and methods. Redacted versions of the documents were considered unacceptable by the Democrats.

The State Department, referring to the Senate's famed inability to keep such material secret, has categorically refused to turn those unredacted documents over to the Senate. Moreover, they state that the Department will never allow the Senate to see unredacted originals. In my opinion, State is quite right to make that determination.

In reality, the Democrats are doing nothing more than seizing on the documents as a pretext to hold up the Bolton nomination. The true problem is that the Democrats disagree with the president's policies, and they don't want to nominate Mr. Bolton, who would be an effective advocate for those policies. It's purely political, in other words.

Belgravia Dispatch has the goods on exactly what the tempest is. And it appears to be exactly nothing. Bolton saw intelligence reports that a couple of US state officials where giving some foreigners a hard time and wanted their names to congratulate them. What a truly evil man that Bolton is. How dare he ever congratulate anyone in the US state dept.

Its not exactly like conservatives are united in their support for this guy, either. Besides it does seem that a request for documents, even of political, is at the very least a legitimate reason to keep debate open. At least they are offering a reason this time, as opposed to being solely a method of avoiding a vote. Now you can argue that they are feinting desire for debate, and I may very well agree.. but at least that is alot more than what they were doing before.

Jamie, I demand to see the note you passed your friend in 8th grade English class. We need to see what piece of information was so vital that you were willing to knowingly flaunt strict guidelines of class rules.

It didn’t take 72 hours to break down, it took less than 24. Inouye (one of the D signitories) committed to vote for cloture and didn’t. He abstained.
