Durbin finally apologizes
Posted by: McQ on Tuesday, June 21, 2005

Under the category, "it's about time" we file Dick Durbin's apology for his earlier remarks comparing those Americans at Gitmo with Nazis, Pol Pot and those who ran the Soviet gulags:
Under fire from Republicans and some fellow Democrats, Sen. Dick Durbin apologized Tuesday for comparing American interrogators at the Guantanamo Bay prison camp to Nazis and other historically infamous figures.

"Some may believe that my remarks crossed the line," the Illinois Democrat said. "To them I extend my heartfelt apologies."

His voice quaking and tears welling in his eyes, the No. 2 Democrat in the Senate also apologized to any soldiers who felt insulted by his remarks.

"They're the best. I never, ever intended any disrespect for them," he said.

[...]

During his apology, which Durbin delivered while looking directly into a TV camera broadcasting the proceedings, the senator said: "I made reference to Nazis, to Soviets, and other repressive regimes. Mr. President, I've come to understand that's a very poor choice of words."

He also reached out directly to Holocaust survivors, adding: "I'm sorry if anything that I said caused any offense or pain to those who have such bitter memories of the Holocaust, the greatest moral tragedy of our time. Nothing, nothing should ever be said to demean or diminish that moral tragedy."

"I’m sorry if"?
"Some may believe"?
This isn’t an apology, it’s just a stronger form of damage control.

He needs to lose his position in the Senate leadership.

Yeah, this doesn’t sound like an apology to me. A real amends always begins with the words, "I was wrong". I hope this idiot keeps talking. He is only saying what the democrats really think about America and about our military.

I’m inclined to accept this apology, even if it isn’t sincerely motivated. I don’t think an apology needs to contain a self-flagellating mea culpa (although it helps). If I remember correctly, Bush supporters asked non-supporters to accept an apology that didn’t begin with the words "I was wrong" with regard to WMD intel in Iraq.

"I’m sorry if anything I said..."

WTF???

As if the man has no cotrol over the words he chose to speak??? Involuntary reflex was it?

I don’t know which is lower - not having the guts to stand by your remarks (as huideous as they are), or actually believing them!

Lets see do not apologize for going over the line, do not deny you called American troops Nazis and cry crocodile tears. I guiess this is what the Democrats describe as leadership and integrity.

Again he did not apologize. An apopogy would have been something like - "Gitmo is not and never has been anything like what the Socialist Labor Party ran."

Did you notice that he apologized after Daley called for him to? Daley is a powerful man in Illinois politics. Durbin cannot get re-elected without Daley’s endorsement and did not want to displease him.

Does anyone remember Trent Lott? If you’ll recall all Lott did was speak warmly about a fellow Senator at his retirement dinner.. and for that was drubbed out of the leadership.

Durbin, meanwhile, slighted the American people, and sided with the enemies of America. His policies and that of his party, for that matter...still operate from the words he spoke. And he’s still the number two man among Congressional Democrats... and we’re supposed to be satisfied with this outcome?

An apology simply doesn’t cut it. Durbin needs to be gone. That he’s not, tells me what I’ve always known.... and have always argued... that fairness and moral integrity is not what Democrats are about.

That’s up to the people of Illinois.

Was Lott being removed from his lofty position the result of any action by the people of his district?

I believe Lott was ousted because the MSM ran him into the ground for saying ’wish you had been elected back in ’56 or ’60’. He stepped down (as I recall) to smooth things out - because he had class and integrity.

This guy - he must have gotten some Clinton counseling before going out. I believe the process for dems is 1. Say something crazy 2. If (and only if) is it crazy enough that the MSM has to cover, offer a BS apology and 3. The MSM will go away, and the whole thing will quiet down.

or something like that -

He stepped down because it was clear the Democrats (and I include the press here) were not going to stop howling until he was gone.

Were that they had the integrity to do the same with Durbin.

Bithead:

The MSM would be horrified if Strom Thurmond had come to power. That is to say, they disagreed w/ Trent Lott.

I leave it to the reader to decide whether, with a military that has "deliberately targeted" journalists, as charged by Eason Jordan and Linda Foley, the MSM would disagree w/ Dick Durbin.

Perhaps that might explain the difference in reaction?

That’s has been my stated position from the outset... that, that is exactly the explaination. You can imagine the howls THAT brought. Yet I find it far too easy to defeat any other conclusion.

I watched (on C-SPAN) Icky Dicky Durbin apologize on the Senate floor for comparing GITMO to NAZI, Soviet and POL POT death camps. He was choked up - TRULY NEAR TEARS (like Voinovich!), and I think he understands he crossed the line, and has learned his lesson. GOOD.

Now he must RESIGN FROM LEADERSHIP.

After all, Trent Lott APOLOGIZED FOUR TIMES, AND THEN STILL HAD TO RESIGN AS LEADER.

If Durbin fails to resign, it tarnishes the entire Democrat Party.

That the dems are putting no pressure on Icky Dicky Durbin says EVERYTHING you need to know about the dems: they are beholden to their loony Left base (which believes durbin’s comments about Gitmo were ok); and the dems are spineless.
