Kerry’s Discharge
Posted by: McQ on Wednesday, October 13, 2004

For those of you who've been seeing references to whether Kerry had a "discharge problem" or not coming out of the military, the original article is here in the NY Sun.

Some bloggers have some great articles on it as well. Beldar, as usual, does a fabulous job, as does Captain's Quarters. Those two alone will get you into the story up to your neck.

I don't have a whole bunch to add except to say that minus Kerry's record, the conjecture that he appealed a less than honorable discharge certainly appears to have some credence.

The timing of the request is especially suspect (Jimmy Carter's administration, amnesty, right after he was elected to the Senate as a Democrat, etc.)

It will be very interesting to see how this plays out over the coming days now that the blogosphere has hold of it.

UPDATE: Bill at INDC Journal has an update which cites a note from a lawyer who has done some research into the conjecture going around the 'sphere and urges caution on jumping to any conclusions (hat tip to Alan P).

Let me echo that caution. Don't get too caught up in the circumstantial evidence and conjecture at this point. Of course if Kerry would release his records conjecture wouldn't be necessary, would it?

UPDATE (JON): Let me preface my comment with this disclaimer: I don't care if this story is true or not. Really. It's just not on my radar, and I think whether people believe it or not will have a very high degree of correlation with whether they are anti- or pro-Kerry. In the end, though, it's a political gotcha-story, and irrelevant to my policy differences with John Kerry.

Having said that, I should point this out--and I'd like to hear from Kerry supporters on this: this is exactly why Kerry needed to release his complete records. If you're going to run on your military service, then you can expect questions about your military service.

And if you don't release the records of your military service......the blanks will be filled in with questions. Like this.

Besides, after hounding Bush to release his records for so many years, it is hypocrisy of the highest order that the Democratic candidate has not done the same.

Why won't Kerry put this crap to bed with a simple signature on Form 180?

Because the MSM doesn't want us to find out what he's hiding.

I can't believe the Navy would give a 3-Purple Heart, Silver Star officer anything other than an honorable discharge.

I do remember reading that after he got back from his 3 months in Viet Nam, he asked for an early out so that he could go back home and run for office, and that was granted.

Maybe that involved some sort of special discharge.

In any event, I believe this is a non-issue.

The question of whether or not someone who aspires to be commander-in-chief ever received a less-than-honorable discharge from the armed forces is certainly relevant, IMHO.

If the MSM won't ask the question, I suggest that we do. Spend a few minutes and a dollar or two calling the national Kerry campaign HQ or the DNC, and ask this question: "Has Senator Kerry ever received a less-than-honorable discharge from the U.S. Navy or the U.S. Navy Reserve?"

A "no" answer puts this to rest immediately. Anything else would be quite telling.

The early out was for active duty ... not his reserve duty. Some are saying it might have been an involuntary separation under the "up or out" program, but I don`t believe the program was in effect at that time. It may very well be a result of his not attending drills while on his remaining reserve status. Wouldn`t that be ironic?

I`m afraid it will take more than a "no" from the Kerry campaign for me to put it to rest. A signed SF 180 and his records, however, would do nicely in that regard.

Won't change my opinion of Kerry since I'm already convinced he shouldn't try and run on his military service record. Or his Senate record, or his record as an American.

I guess the real issue is, how many undecided people would let this discharge business sway them away from Kerry.

"I guess the real issue is, how many undecided people would let this discharge business sway them away from Kerry"

Being old-fashioned and naive myself, I guess finding out this late in the campaign that John "War Hero and Reporting for Duty unless reporting for duty means showing up in the Senate" Kerry received a less than honorable discharge would end his campaign and political life. I would also hazard a guess that it would be more than just undecideds that were turned off by it. As a matter of fact, Kerry's mom couldn't have said it better when she told John it was all about "integrity, integrity, and integrity." The hypocricy would be so stark and intense that I could easily imagine many democrats just not showing up on election day, unwilling to vote for Bush and UNABLE to vote for Kerry.

Captmike - While I agree with your sentiment....that won't happen.

We're talking about the same group of people who saw nothing wrong with Martha Stewart heading off to jail (lying under oath) and Bill Clinton finishing his term of office in the White House (lying under oath). It doesn't matter WHY he lied, lying under oath is illegal, at least it is if you
are Martha Stewart and not Bill Clinton.

The same people who call Bush a liar for daring to repeat the information he was told by his intelligence sources...

Etc...you know....

Maybe I'm finally jaded past the point of no return, maybe I'm wrong (oh, to be WRONG on this one) and the majority of Americans would realize what many of us already believe, that he's not fit to be President. I'd love to see it, but it won't happen.

Nope, I think the Dems nationwide would do with this as Massachusetts did for their representative pedophile in the 80's (oh, sorry, the kid WAS 17, but 21 year olds are Children now according to the DNC, so a 17 year old is a child, and therefore Gerry Studds is a pedophile...)
Link

And what they did for their manslaughtering Senator in 1969.

I've said all along, all I ever really needed to know about John Kerry was that Massachusetts thought he should be a Senator.

Much speculation could be avoided by simply asking the Massachusetts Board of Bar Examiners and/or the Massachusetts Board of Bar Overseers for Kerry's records.

They're public records, and should be available to anyone who wants to see them.

Kerry became a Massachusetts attorney in 1976, and I know from experience that applications to practice law or take the bar exam specifically ask for detailed information (and documentation) about military discharges.

I really don't care about Kerry's military conduct. I really don't care about his Senate record, either. I'm no Kerry fan. I really do care about the shrub's rape of our country since he's been in office. I would vote for Mickey Mouse if he were running against this incumbent. I can not think of one way this country is better off than it was 4 years ago, much to the contrary, we are heading downhill fast. "No child left behind" is a disastrous joke, ask any teacher. The Economy is failing, look at the price of oil (hmmm, whose family finances benefit from sky-high gas prices?) Homeland Security is ludicrous, ask any border patrol officer. Kerry may very well suck as President, but the shrub has proven he is wrong and ineffectual in dealing with the State of our Union, both within our borders and without.

This guy explains how an involuntary separation can occur. It doesn't mean that any criminal or suspicious circumstances caused the involuntary termination. It simply means he didnt file the final form to quit the Inactive reserve.
