Super Dome violence: urban legend?
Posted by: McQ on Tuesday, September 06, 2005

It may be:
There were two babies who had their throats slit. The seven-year-old girl who was raped and murdered in the Superdome. And the corpses laid out amid the excrement in the convention centre.

In a week filled with dreadful scenes of desperation and anger from New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina some stories stood out.

But as time goes on many remain unsubstantiated and may yet prove to be apocryphal.

New Orleans police have been unable to confirm the tale of the raped child, or indeed any of the reports of rapes, in the Superdome and convention centre.

New Orleans police chief Eddie Compass said last night: "We don't have any substantiated rapes. We will investigate if the individuals come forward."

And while many claim they happened, no witnesses, survivors or survivors' relatives have come forward.

Nor has the source for the story of the murdered babies, or indeed their bodies, been found. And while the floor of the convention centre toilets were indeed covered in excrement, the Guardian found no corpses.
We all heard it but as I watched the reports from various news agencies, I kept wondering why we weren't seeing interviews with witnesses or survivors or the like.

Now we are beginning to understand why. I don't think there's any question that some took advantage of the situation, the 5 killed by police as they shot at rescuers makes that point quite emphatically, as does video of the looting. But it appears the horror stories which supposedly happened at the Dome may turn out to be apocryphal.

One thing it does point too though, is that the reports that got out about these "horrors" on main stream media outlets see them as guilty of reporting unsubstantiated rumor as fact ... not that they've ever done that before.

I wonder if they'll take responsiblity for that?

Any "mea culpas' do you think? You know, right there in prime time where everyone can see it and not in some seminar conducted after the fact to examine their coverage.

UPDATE: Speaking of "urban legends", CQ has the goods on Sean Penn's rescue attempt in New Orleans.

UPDATE II: Or maybe not. Reader Fiona points us to this link.
Arkansas National Guardsman Mikel Brooks stepped through the food service entrance of the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center Monday, flipped on the light at the end of his machine gun, and started pointing out bodies.

"Don't step in that blood - it's contaminated," he said. "That one with his arm sticking up in the air, he's an old man."
Then he shined the light on the smaller human figure under the white sheet next to the elderly man.

"That's a kid," he said. "There's another one in the freezer, a 7-year-old with her throat cut."

Media will take responsibility only if blame flows towards Blanco and Nagin and away from Bush.

When those reports were coming out, we were wondering what kind of sick twisted freaks could commit such atrocities. Now we wonder what kind of mind would make up such a story.

Certainly will be glad to know that most of it was fiction, though.

You know, if the media were rational, they would DO those prime-time Mea Culpas and try to get back some of that lost credibility they whine about.

Bodies found piled in freezer at Convention

Arkansas National Guardsman Mikel Brooks stepped through the food service entrance of the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center Monday, flipped on the light at the end of his machine gun, and started pointing out bodies.

This article suggests that they do have someone on record attesting to the chaos and criminality in the Dome.

I suppose Bush will blame the locals for starting these rumors. Just wait.

McQ cites an article from The Guardian, which he well knows is a left-leaning newspaper.

So a left-leaning newspaper suggests that things were not as bad as they seem to have been in NO.

I was in the Superdome, and I can confirm I saw numerous acts of violence, cannibalism, and even necrophilia.

But of course that was during the Super Bowl...

I would note that Fiona’s comment shows that some of the stories may have substance, but maybe not at the dome. I have been under the impression for some time that the convention center was a far more violent situation with far less security if any.

Here’s a bet for ya: As part of the Shift the Blame strategy, in the next 24 hours some water carrier for the administration will call for Nagin’s resignation.

I think it will be Hastert - what’s your guess?

No one wants to believe the horrors that went on in the superdome and convention centers but the fact remains that they did. Countless eyewitnesses have been interviewed in Texas shelters about this. Oprah talked about it on her show this morning and the chief of police confirmed to her that children were raped and they couldn’t respond because the police force was overpowered by the gangs. The police chief said he was nearly abducted himself when some thugs confronted him at the superdome and was only saved by his men coming to his aid. He was in tears describing the horror of knowing what was going on and not having the manpower to respond to the violence. This is probably why two members of the force committed suicide. Don’t be so quick to dismiss peoples suffering as some sort of myth.

Nice to see you’ve memorized the new catch phrase for the anti-Bush crowd.

"Shift the blame", is it?

How very original. You must be so proud of your ability to use it in a semi-coherent sentence.

Keep practicing.

No one is dismissing anything, Karen ... which is why you see Update II. But you have to admit there’s been very little come out in terms of hard evidence which supports the initial reports.

And Oprah talking to a police chief who "couldn’t respond" doesn’t at all mean that an actual rape took place. It simply means he had a report to which he couldn’t respond.

That’s the point of the post. There were a lot of reports. We’re asking if they were true or apocryphal.

My heart leapt with joy at the prospect these atrocities were manufactured by the MSM in their scandal seeking breathlessness...

...so now I’m back to the particular variety of heartsickness I’ve had since this disaster started.

Which is still a lot better than a Cat 5 blowing through and leveling everything the waters didn’t cover.

Got to look at the bright side, maybe idiots who order uniformed folks around won’t be so hot to disarm the common citizenry, in the future, and maybe the common citizenry will be more likely to to be mindful of the use of being armed.

The good enough guys outnumber the bad guys, and that don’t mean d!ck if the good guys have to meet thugs with their own hands empty.

How do anyone but the people of NO call for his resignation, MK?

Of course, if he were asked to resign then he could go to Las Vegas with the NOPD.

I don’t suppose it’s occurred to anyone that the police in NO, being tradiionally corrupt, might be underplaying the crime that did happen?

Look, I don’t know either way... but perhaps that’s the point... neithger does the media, clearly, and therefore we don’t either... and this explination makes as much sense as anything else.

You are dismissing the claims McQ or you didn’t bother to read my whole posting. I said countless eyewitnesses have reported seeing these rapes taking place. There are also several people being interviewed by Oprah and co. today on her show who are talking about the rapes and other atrocities they witnessed. This isn’t secondhand information these were individuals and families that were there.

Great ... why is it the authorities seem to know about them?

Funny how they seem to be able to find Oprah, but don’t seem to have been able to find anyone to report it too.

It doesn’t fit at the moment Karen. Yeah, I’m skeptical, and I’m not saying it didn’t happen, but I’m going to have to see more than claims on Oprah.

I was citing Oprah as being the most recent program to focus on the rapes. Survivors of the Superdome discussed this on MSNBC, Fox and CNN. It has not been widely covered but many people have been interviewed that were there and all have reported similar events. If you are in such disbelief why not contact the news agencies and ask them. If anything there seems to be more of an effort to kill this story rather than report it. Among the dead recovered today at the Superdome was a seven year old child with their throat slit. That should give you a clue of the hell the people in there went through.

Yes Karen, we all know that. As I mentioned, I linked to that in UPDATE II above. They found a body of a young 7 year old and it appeard her throat was slit.

It might be best if we wait for the autopsy report, don’t you suppose?

And again, discussing and reporting ’similar events’ tells me nothing.

Were they eyewitnesses? Did they actually SEE the crimes occur? Or were they victims?

Repeating horror stories which were told to them by others doesn’t mean a crime has been committed. I’ve been in very high stress situations where absolute rubbish rumors circulated which we found out later had absolutely no foundation in truth, but in the high stress situation we were more prone to give them credibility.

I’m simply wondering if the same phenomenon took place in NO.

If you are in such disbelief why not contact the news agencies and ask them.

I’m only asking a question. If they’re more than rumors that will come out ... but it’s going to be a hell of a lot more convincing "evidence" than I heard it on Oprah.

Yes they were eyewitnesses. I mentioned MSNBC, CNN and Fox all reported this but you keep referring back to Oprah so you’re obviously more interested in patronising people than pursuing the truth.

As far as the child with the slit throat is concerned, you may need to wait for the autopsy, but common sense tells me she didn’t cut her own throat.

I thought it was interesting that Oprah could report the rapes, yet never asked if the men who did this were arrested, killed, or if they just simply boarded a bus to Houston. Pretty poor investigating on her part if she can’t back up the entire story.

The media wants the world to say "look at those Americans! They are animals!" I guess it sells more papers overseas.

I am sure it was horrible in the dome for days with no food, water, electricity-I do not doubt that~but mysery loves company, so the media decides to pile on the rumors of the raping and killing of children... who wouldn’t read that? The media needs to be careful or many people are going to turn their back on relief efforts—don’t even get me started on Penn!

I didn’t take the time to read all the comments posted, but i think it’s important to be aware that a lot of what you’ve heard happened in the superdome DID happen - and a lot worse.

my mother-in-law was there... she was in town for a business trip and couldn’t get a flight out, and had to escape her hotel to get to the Superdome before the levy broke. The things she witnessed and the things she heard are horrifying, but the last thing she wants to do is talk to the media. She had a hard enough time telling us about watching men shooting others, being threatened herself, and having men she didn’t know literally have to fight to protect her... and yes, she heard rape victims screaming in the middle of the night, and traveled in a group of 5 to try and stay safe.

So sure, it would be great to pretend that things in the Superdome were docile and that people didn’t turn into animals, but that’s simply not the case. It was worse than you can imagine, and we’re just so grateful that my mother-in-law made it out alive.

I don’t give a rat’s ass about talking to the media. But if she doesn’t report the crimes to the police, then she’s just adding to the problem by making unsupported accusations.

After thinking about my previous comment, let me clarify...I’m afraid I may have seemed harsh, but that was not my intention.

Talking to the media can serve an important purpose by exposing serious problems. But the media also passes along unverified reports and helps to spread rumor and urban legends.

Unless witnesses report what they know to the legal authorities, then it’s more difficult to separate non-fiction from fiction. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem as if there was any authority to receive reports within the Superdome areas. I certainly hope Kendra’s mother-in-law is willing and able to find some way to report what she witnessed.

Kendra, I’m glad to hear your mother-in-law got out safely. It’s obvious to any reasonable person why she wouldn’t have been able to give a formal crime report given the more pressing concern of getting out alive. There will no doubt be a lot of interviewing of victims and witnesses in days and weeks to come and hopefully counselling provided to the thousands that went through this hell.

McQ’s premise was that most of the tales of horror regarding the superdome were probably "apocryphal". He refers to the chief of police, Eddie Compass, saying he didn’t have any substantiated evidence of any rapes in his posting of 9/6. Mr. Compass was on national tv yesterday (9/6) and today confirming that rapes DID indeed take place at the superdome. MCQ says no witnesses to any rapes have come forward which is untrue and,as everyone now knows, the body of a seven year old child with their throat slit WAS found at the superdome. The "mea culpa" should come from MCQ, he jumped the gun in pointing fingers and now the finger points back at him.

The only thing worse than the truth is people trying to cover it up. MCQ et al apparently can’t handle the truth.

what’s all this talk about liberal agendas and such? When I googled "superdome atrocities" I came up with a site called "council of conservative citizens" that appeared to have a major agenda in proving that black people are vicious criminals.
I first heard about this story from an acquaintance who swore a member of a swat team that was the first to enter the superdome to clear it told him he saw hundreds of bodies with slit throats, all white. The child in this version was 4, and not only had a slit throat, but had a broomstick shoved up its ass to display as a trophy.
This person said that it was being supressed (by the government or the media, I’m not sure which) to avoid spraking race riots.
Speaking as a stupid liberal, I pray to God these stories aren’t true.
It seems to me that no liberal has an agenda in perpetuating stories like this.

I heard from my uncle who stays north of the lake ponchatrain, that he heard from numerous people that babies were raped, had their throats slit, and were hung.

It could be a sick rumor. We hope.

But there is evidence that some of this did take place at the convention center and possibly the superdome.

Cooper Anderson (CNN) was in the convention center last night and showed footage of a corpse, which he described as appearing to have been "mutilated."

I honestly think there may be a huge conspiracy behind the holocaust like atrocities that may have happened in the superdome and convention center.

Similar to the holocaust, if this stuff isn’t talked about, we as Americans will find ourselves similar to the Germans who to this day deny the holocaust ever happened.

It was reported on the news that a couple N.O. cops had committed suicide.

possible relation?

Police statistically have a higher suicide rate than the rest of the population.
They have a hard job that exposes them to a lot of hostility and ugliness in life. They also have a tremendous amount of resposibilty, and must make life or death decisions under stressful conditions. I can believe that two New Orleans cops could have killed themselves for other reasons than being unable to stop atrocities from happening at the Superdome.
It’s difficult to know what really happened in the Superdome—there are sick people who like to spread ugly rumors, however, people are capable of horrible things.
I don’t want to believe it, and I think there are some reasons to hope those things didn’t really happen. It could be that something happened and people have exaggerated and blown the original incident out of proportion.
Also, I might add, as a reporter I get sick of being lumped into this category of evil, stupidity or just plain incompetence known as "the media."
We are people like anyone else. Some of us do our jobs better than others, and some organizations are better than others.
I don’t claim to be the savior of the world, but I try hard to be ethical, honest and responsible in my work.
By the way—that posting about networks worried about legal liability? That wouldn’t really apply to this situation—the rules about that are pretty straightforward, generally. There are lots of ways to report on a crime without exposing yourself to a lawsuit. I don’t see that as being a consideration here.

THE FEDERAL GOVERMENT SHOULD BARE THE BLAME FOR NOT ACTING. IF WE CAN DELIEVER A ARMY OVERSEAS IN 24 HOURS, THEN WE SHOULD HAVE ORDERED THE ARMY TO THE DOME RIGHT AWAY AND SHOT ANYONE COMMITING CRIMES UNDER THE CURUMSTANCES. ITS DISGUSTING AND ITS DISAPOINTING FOR ME AND AMERICA.

BOTTOM LINE IS OUR LAWS ARE NOT TUFF ENOUGH AND THE ACCOUNTABILITY IS NOT ENFORCED.

Well that’s not the way it works under the laws here, Jeff, which is why its easier to deliver an army overseas than to a state in the union. Might want to bone up on that annoying little fact.

Everybody
I have heard from a trusted friend, who overheard a conversation between two guys he thinks were at the superdome, that some of the victims there managed to hide their valuable jewelry and such before they were brutally murdered. These two guys were talking about their plans to recover the valuables when the area was clear, and my close friend took notes on the locations mentioned. Unfortunately my friend is unable to get back to NO right now, as he has lost everything and can’t afford plane fare. If some of you could help, by making small donations toward his travel expenses, he would be happy to reimburse you with interest after he recovers the abandoned property. Remember, time is of the essence; the other two guys are trying to get there first. Also, my friend is going on Oprah soon to try to raise money, so don’t miss out.

As of today September 13th, it has been acknowledged by the New Orleans Police Dept in a blurb that flashed across CNN yesterday, that NO rapes or murders took place in the Superdome. Suspicions of the claimed rapes and murders surfaced late last wk, when no confirmations could be made as to these actions. They come in great part from third hand sources. The article above detailing the finding of bodies in a freezer in the Superdome is also a *hoax.* It was first posted on the NOLA Picayune (which has become a blog) and then picked up by smaller and independent news sources. However, larger news media (from the UK Guardian to the Chicago Tribune) have conceded that these allegations of rapes and murder within shelters, superdomes were utter hoaxes. In fact, the rumors traveled with the evacuees—causing needless panics in Houston, Baton Rogue and numerous LA counties/parishes as citizens were fed fantastical tales of looters and rapists destroying the city business district in orgies of violence. The mayor of Baton Rogue, buying into the hysteria, even shut down his city prematurely, while gunshops sold record numbers of weapons. But, as with the New Orleans Superdome tales, they all turned out to be urban legends not based on one shred of actual evidence or reality.

What *is* missing from the news media is what happened in the streets. Community activist Malik Rahim from New Orleans for instance, in an interview yesterday, told of white vigilantes riding around in trucks with guns threatening to shoot any looters—whether they were children stealing bread, or adults stealing televisions—many of which were *traded* for bread. In response to this, black men (mostly young) began arming themselves, and warning that any black person shot over such things would result in retaliation against the white community. Malik Rahim told of personally trying to defuse the crisis, that threatened to become a full blown race riot—with many police backing the white vigilantes, thus putting them on the opposite side of the black community.

All of this has been ignored or unreported by the larger news media, which instead has involved itself in spreading urban legends that were running rampant through the information vacuum of flood ravaged New Orleans (only to quietly retract them later) and helping reinforce common American stereotypes/fears of young black males, the urban poor, criminality, etc. I would suggest a great many of you see an old black and white movie called "Birth of a Nation" to understand how and why such rumors could so easily be passed off as fact not only in the media, but even in the mostly black evacuee community.

The following excerpt is taken from an interview of New Orleans activist Malik Rahim, who as of this past wknd remained behind in his flood stricken New Orleans region. He details some of what was going on behind the scenes, where the media could not/or would not travel.

MALIK RAHIM: New Orleans Police is the worst of the lot. Some of them. I ain’t going to say all of them but most of them. We get a more friendly response from the Army. And the National Guard. Than from the New Orleans Police. I have no real respect for them anymore. Because they allowed those white vigilantes to ride through with carte blanche. I mean, if a white person was taking something, he was taking food for his family. But if a black was taking something, he was looting. You know? And you see signs all around: “We kill looters. We shoot looters.” Some of them was even bragging about it. We used to—for the first week we had truckloads of whites riding around, white vigilantes riding around talking about they’re protecting the neighborhood. New Orleans came so close to breaking into a race riot than I ever seen. You know, because even though they were shooting blacks in the Algiers part where I live, Algiers is surrounded by nothing but black communities. And guys were saying that if they hear of anybody else being shot, they are going to shoot any white that comes through their community. It took a lot for us to stop this. But we didn’t have no consideration from the government. You know? And that kept on going because again, if whites—I mean, we sit here and watch them. They ride around in their dump trucks, I mean, pickup trucks with shotguns and high powered rifles. And if a black just showed a knife, it was automatically jumped on. I mean, it was just totally two standards of justice. I mean, that’s the part that really got me. You know, that—because it shouldn’t have been. I mean, we didn’t, first of all, we didn’t have to abandon the 120,000 people that we literally abandoned in the city. I mean, we literally abandoned the poor and told them, “Hey, you fend for yourself.” Then when they fend for themselves, then they was arrested."

Malik Rahim, a veteran of the Black Panther Party in New Orleans. For decades he has worked as an organizer of public housing tenants both there and in San Francisco. He recently ran for New Orleans City Council on the Green Party ticket.

I’ve seen this video before. Its from Sept. 2nd. It was one of the first I saw that made me initially think the reports were correct. However, even this account, as emotional as it is, doesn’t give any direct evidence. The person giving us the account says "some of us women" in a geneal sense being raped, and speaks of men she doesn’t know raping. As this isn’t an interview, no one has asked her the important question of if she herself was raped (as she never says this directly) or whether she witnessed any of this. If she did, its of course terrible and yet and still nowhere near the Superdome/Convention Ctr. Similar tearful testimonies were given predominantly by black men and women and even the New Orleans chief of police (also black), claiming babies had been raped in the Convention center and had their throat slits—some even claiming (at first) to have seen the infant with her throat split open. As emotionally wrenching as those accounts were—now they are considered urban legends, even by the New Orleans Chief of Police who had been assured of their reality earlier. It is very wrong to discount any allegation of rape, and such things should definitely be *investigated* and taken with the utmost seriousness. Any charge should be enough to have a thorough inquiry into the fact of the happenings. In the US a woman on avg is raped ever 6 minutes. And I don’t know if rapists take a day off. However until these accounts become more than uncertain testimonies (no matter how emotionally driven they may seem), they should not be treated as prima facie evidence. And I would hope, if this woman is speaking of accounts she knows of firsthand or personally, she reports them to the proper authorities—who say they have yet to make a substantiated case of rape.

The problem with making all of these allegations is that none have been substantiated. All of these people bring questionable sources of information. To substantiate claims of racism is just adding fuel to the flames. Yes there were reports of violence in the superdome, but to what extent i don’t know. Until i see proof it is hard to believe this Joe from the next. On a different note who in their right mind would believe one man such as Malik Rahimm who is part of a radical movement that incites hatred of other races. I don’t believe a word he says. Many people will try in come in and take advantage of the situation for their own gain and pleasure.

I am an National Guardsman who had the unfortunate duty of providing security for Department of Homeland Security Coroner when he removed all the human remains from the Superdome on Sept. 3rd. The body count was 5 which included 4 elderly people and 1 middle-aged man. No children. I cannot attest to how these people died as I am not a medical professional, but I can tell you there were not dead children.

Ignorance of history is astounding. That someone of adult age who has ever read a text of the 1960s-70s would think the Black Panther Party (which was allied with Latino groups like the Brown Berets, Asian groups like Yellow Peril, and numerous white groups/individuals from anti-Vietnam protestors to actor Marlon Brando)incited "hatred of all other races" reveals a complete lack of historical understanding. Call the Black Panther Party of the 1960s founded by Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seale (not any recent unrelated spin offs) radical. Call them Marxists and Black Nationalists. But that they incited race-hatred is simply a product of popular (highly misinformed) American urbana folklore. Pick up a *book*...please.

Urban Legends You pick up a book Jerk!

"In October of 1967, the police arrest the Defense Minister of the Panthers, Huey Newton, for killing an Oakland cop. Panther Eldridge Cleaver begins the movement to "Free Huey", a struggle the Panthers would devote a great deal of their attention to in the coming years, while the party spreads its roots further into the political spectrum, forming coalitions with various revolutionary parties. Stokely Carmichael, the former chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and a nationally known proponent of Black Power, is recruited into the party through this struggle, and soon becomes the party’s Prime Minister in February, 1968. Carmichael is adamantly against allowing whites into the black liberation movement, explaining whites cannot relate to the black experience and have an intimidating effect on blacks; a position that stirs opposition within the Panthers. Carmichael explains: "Whites who come into the black community with ideas of change seem to want to absolve the power structure of its responsibility for what it is doing, and say that change can only come through black unity, which is the worst kind of paternalism..... If we are to proceed toward true liberation, we must cut ourselves off from white people..... [otherwise] we will find ourselves entwined in the tentacles of the white power complex that controls this country."

Your statements have no basis of fact either. This organization in the past was not tolerant of whites in fact they expelled them from the organization entirely in the 60’s. What they are today is a perversion. Malik is just playing the race card, plan and simple.
