Mary Mapes: Hooked on Semantics
Posted by: McQ on Tuesday, November 08, 2005

You have to wonder what it will take to break Mary Mapes out of the stage of "denial" into which she seems to have permanently wedged herself:
In her first interview since being fired, former CBS News producer Mary Mapes maintains that her controversial "60 Minutes II" story on President Bush's National Guard service was "true" and that "no one has proved that the documents were not authentic."
Ummm ... and no one proved they were. But the preponderance of evidence says overwhelmingly they weren't Mary.
Mapes was fired after an independent panel found her basic reporting was "faulty."

In her interview with ABC News chief investigative correspondent Brian Ross, to be broadcast Wednesday morning on "Good Morning America," Mapes says she is unrepentant about her role. "I don't think I committed bad journalism. I really don't," she says.
You know what I believe her ... and my guess is so will many others, which is why she'll most likely never work again, at least in the field of journalism.
Mapes says she is continuing to investigate the source of the controversial documents whose authenticity was seriously questioned by the CBS panel.
She could team up with OJ.
She tells Ross that she had no journalistic obligation to prove the authenticity of the documents before including them in the "60 Minutes II" report. "I don't think that's the standard," she said.
Well of course it isn't Mary, which is why the "Hitler Diaries" should have been taken at face value, huh?
Mapes tells Ross she feels in no way responsible for what happened at CBS News in the wake of her "60 Minutes II" report.

"If you're talking about an investigation that basically gutted a news organization, and turned people one against another and made people afraid of each other, and really scooted the country's most experienced anchor out of his anchor chair, and now has the evening news casting about for some kind of format that will be zippy and new, I didn't do that. I had absolutely nothing to do with any of that," she said.
Of course not, Mar ... it was everyone else's fault.

Good grief.

Even CBS can't find it in itself to see it Mary's way as their statement clearly indicates:
"Her disregard for journalistic standards — and for her colleagues — comes through loud and clear in her interviews and in the book that attempts to rewrite the history of this complex and sad affair," the statement said. It also pinpointed Mapes' notion that a news organization has no obligation "to authenticate such important source material" as only one of the "troubling and erroneous statements in her account."

Neither did the editors who allowed the claims of that fake Marine to go unchallenged....see a pattern here?

Just like a scientist promulgating a new theory or a prosecutor charging a defendent, the person making the case (or others supporting that theory) needs to prove it for it to be accepted. A theory is false until proven true, a defendent innocent until proven guilty. Her documents needed to be considered suspect until proven authentic. She assumed authenticity and demands others to prove her conclusively wrong. That is simply not how it is done in any field of endeavor.

I have been to the moon. And Mars. And Saturn. and I was visited by little green men from outer space who want to all live in peaceful socialist coexistence.

Go ahead and prove me wrong. Noone has been able to prove that these things didnt happen.

Sorry but I have to go and get back to running Planet Earth. I am the supreme high commander after all. Go ahead and prove that I am not.

It’s instructive, Kyle ... very instructive, and indicative of the serious problems to be found within the MSM. Remember how she thinks the next time you watch something ... and understand, there are people within that profession that agree with her.

Hmmmm, Kevin, there is a lot that going on around here.

Interestingly, however, that is how it’s done in the study of Evolution Theory these days.

However, that’s a digression from the topic at hand.

Nathan, tell that to the people in Dover, PA. Have you read any of the current court proceedings? You can keep holding on to your faith in what the proponents of creationism have admitted is not scientific under oath, but creationism will never be taught legally in American science classrooms. As far as your belief that evolution is not scientific, I guess you think there must be a grand conspiracy by thousands of scientists and teachers to fool people all over the world since they claim evolution is scientific. Either that or they are so incredibly stupid that they don’t really understand science at all. Which is it?

If she doesn’t think that she needs to prove the memos authentic, then could she at least provide a scintilla of evidence of authenticity? It appears she believes that the evidence of authenticity is that the documents contain some information that "meshes" with known facts about Bush’s National Guard record. But the information that meshed was all part of the public domain. So the meshing evidence does not rule out a fake produced by a reasonably informed forger. Outside of the so-callled meshing analysis, is there any evidence of authenticity?
