Podcast for 22 Jan 06
Posted by: Dale Franks on Monday, January 23, 2006

Here is the weekly podcast for 22 Jan 06.

There are a few changes you might notice this week. Instead of trying to work out what we want to talk about beforehand, we've decided to just get on the phone and start talking. I think this makes the conversation more fun, more spontaneous, and more fun to listen to.

Second, it's also a long (37 minute) podcast. There's always a tradeoff between bandwidth and sound quality, and previously, we've been putting out the podcast in relatively high-bandwidth stereo. Well, I'm changing that, too. The vast majority of the podcast is just talk, so there's no reason to go stereo with it. So, I've changed the format, cutting back to 20kbps mono. That means we can have longer podcasts, and use less bandwidth. Previous podcats have been around 25-30 minutes long, with MP3 files of about 12-15 megabytes. Going mono has cut that badwidth way back, so the full, 37-minute podcast this week only takes 5.5 megabytes to download.

So, the sound quality is still very good for they type of podcast we're doing, but the much lower bandwidth allows more people—even dial-up people—to download it with relative ease.

So, if bandwidth considerations have prevented you from enjoying the podcast in the past, that should no longer be a problem.

By the way, here is the illegal immigration comic book post that we were referring to, in case you haven't seen it.

I hope you don’t mind if I make a suggestion/request with regards to your podcast.....could you please stick to doing what it says on the tin ? What I mean is this - I subscribe to your podcast in order to listen to you pronounce forth on a topic of the day. I don’t always agree with you (in fact, rarely), but I still find the podcast entertaining. The other day I listened to one of your shows and you played music instead of discussing current affairs/economics/politics. This I found very strange because I don’t expect to walk into my local Indian restaurant to find they’re having an American Burger week......if I want an American Burger, I’ll go to MacDonalds (in fact, I’d go to Jasmi’s, a local chain that does a really good burger wrapped in lettuce. Ironically, the best thing MacDonalds do in this part of the world - Bahrain - is the McArabia lamb kofte wrap, which is delicious). Then another day you interviewed an actress, and now you make a show by seeing where it goes instead of deciding on a topic/agenda and sticking to it.

Speaking as a listener, when I subscribe to a podcast it’s because I’m interested in the contents....so can you stick to what the label on your tin says please ?

What is it about some of you people that makes you demand that we provide the content that you want, instead of the content we desire to produce?

It’s really simple. If you don’t like the FREE content we provide, which is FREE, and which we provide in our own spare time, without charging you anything—making it FREE—then don’t read it or listen to it.

So, I tell you what, I’ll just change what it says on "the tin", and we’ll continue producing whatever the hell content we want to produce.

Dude, if you want me to take the time to download your podcast, quit fuckin’ with it. If I want grungy punk I’ll download grungy punk, OK ? I appreciate you make it for FREE, but you should appreciate that your audience listens to you for FREE - it’s a two-way street.

You know, I’d actually prefer you don’t download it. There are plenty of podcasts out there. I’d rather you listen to one of them. Nobody’s holding a gun to your head, and making you listen to ours. If you don’t like it, then don’t listen.
