Posted by: Dale Franks on Monday, January 23, 2006 Here is the weekly podcast for 22 Jan 06. There are a few changes you might notice this week. Instead of trying to work out what we want to talk about beforehand, we've decided to just get on the phone and start talking. I think this makes the conversation more fun, more spontaneous, and more fun to listen to. Second, it's also a long (37 minute) podcast. There's always a tradeoff between bandwidth and sound quality, and previously, we've been putting out the podcast in relatively high-bandwidth stereo. Well, I'm changing that, too. The vast majority of the podcast is just talk, so there's no reason to go stereo with it. So, I've changed the format, cutting back to 20kbps mono. That means we can have longer podcasts, and use less bandwidth. Previous podcats have been around 25-30 minutes long, with MP3 files of about 12-15 megabytes. Going mono has cut that badwidth way back, so the full, 37-minute podcast this week only takes 5.5 megabytes to download. So, the sound quality is still very good for they type of podcast we're doing, but the much lower bandwidth allows more people—even dial-up people—to download it with relative ease. So, if bandwidth considerations have prevented you from enjoying the podcast in the past, that should no longer be a problem.
